Chuck Robinson grew up in Oklahoma City, attending the University of Central Oklahoma, where he graduated with a Business Management degree in 1988 and a Masters of Arts in Substance Abuse Studies in 2012. Having made a significate change in his life in 1982, Robinson found himself raising four sons, coaching sports, active in the business world, and a volunteer in his local church. He felt a calling on his life to serve Jesus Christ in 1988. Robinson continued his “tent making” as a local oil and gas business owner, while volunteering in the church by leading various missions groups, youth groups and Sunday school. While attending Henderson Hills Baptist Church, located in Edmond, Oklahoma, he served on staff for eight (8) years as its first pastor of recovery. Robinson is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, a Licensed Minister and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. Today he works with Elements Behavioral Health, serving as the National Director of Christian Programing and Outreach, taking what has successfully been accomplished locally to the national level. Robinson wrote his first book, published last year (2016) called ‘Loving the Addict in Your Pew, a roadmap for building a church-based recovery ministry.’ In April of this last year, the Robinson’s happily celebrated thirty four years of marriage. Chuck and Vicky have four sons, Chad, Colby, Conner, and Teyon, and four beautiful grandchildren.

Beyond the Bars - The Power of Connection in Recovery

Welcome to R1 Learning
Hello, my name is Tom Karl and I founded R1 as a result of my professional experience and my own recovery journey. I am grateful to have survived the struggles and consequences from my addiction with the help and support from so many others along my path. A positive outcome following my last relapse was the inspiration to create the R1 Learning System and the Discovery Cards. I am now committed to three tenets:
Keep “Recovery First” – This is true for me and those we touch through R1. Without it, nothing else is possible. And with it – anything and everything is. We can reach our dreams and aspirations if we keep recovery #1. This has certainly been true for me.
Serve others – Helping others who also struggle with mental health, substance use disorder, other addictions, or life challenges, and their loved ones, supports our own recovery and personal growth.
Choose to live a healthy and purposeful life – Life is precious... and our time here is short. Happiness comes from serving others, doing good, and being grateful. I choose to be happy and hope to inspire others to live a healthy and purposeful life along my R1 journey.
Connecting with others and sharing our experience is foundational to general wellness, recovery, and personal development. We at R1 are driven to spark meaningful conversations through self-discovery that increase connection, expression, choice, action, and change for individuals and their families. The R1 Learning System was developed to encourage these things and help individuals build the skills for change. We hope you find it does just that – increases engagement, builds vocabulary, helps individuals express themselves more effectively, and spark meaningful conversations for you and the people you work with.
We are committed to developing and disseminating quality training and technology driven multi-language tools for the mental health, substance use disorder, and personal growth communities. We want to hear from you. We will need your input and feedback – both your successes and challenges – so we can continue to improve the tools.
We look forward to meeting you, working with your team, and serving your community. We look forward to making a difference – with you!

Aaron Rubio
International Masters Addiction Coach ( IMAC )
United Community Addiction Network ( UCAN )
The mission of the UCAN project is to unite the community resources together to combat the disease of addiction.
Aaron’s involvement with addiction began in 2014. He was
dealing with it in both his immediate and extended family and so he
went on a search for answers and resources. After numerous calls and
online searches, he realized the system was under duress and his
passion for change was born.
Early in Aaron’s journey he was introduced to FAN (Families
Against Narcotics). It took a short period of time to realize FAN was
bringing addiction awareness to the community and he ventured in to
start the Genesee County Chapter in 2014. After creating and helping
with many initiatives throughout the years with FAN, he noticed huge
gaps in the services. Wanting to push for change on another level, he
decided to move in a different direction.
His passion has grown into a full-scale non-profit called United
Community Addiction Network or UCAN. The mission of the UCAN
movement is to unite the community resources to combat the disease
of addiction. UCAN is working with hospitals to develop a standard of
practice regarding addiction within the hospital setting. Recently UCAN
signed an agreement with the Genesee Intermediate School District for
video presentations on drug awareness and UCAN is also working
closely with the Genesee County Sheriff’s office to start multiple new
initiatives. The movement is poised to truly make an impact in Genesee
County.
Aaron is member of many community groups including The
Greater Flint Health Coalition, Genesee County Prevention Coalition,
Drug Court Advisory Board, Jail Re-entry program and The Salvation
Army Advisory Board. In addition, he has obtained over 15 State and
National Addiction Certifications allowing him to practice as an
International Masters Addiction Coach (IMAC).

How My ography Addiction Hurt People and Destroyed Relationships
Joshua Shea seemingly had it all. A loving wife, two children, and a supportive extended family. In 2010, he launched a lifestyle magazine in his hometown. Within a year, he was one of the founders of Central Maine's largest film festival and had won a seat on his City Council. Accolades, including receiving the Key to the City and being called one of the "Next 10 People Shaping Maine's Economy" by a state newspaper followed.
While the public got one picture of Shea, behind closed doors, his longtime mental health and addiction issues were festering. A workaholic by nature, he actively ignored the red flags surrounding his long-existing ography and alcohol problems. Finding it easier to lose himself in a bottle of tequila and adult websites, Shea's relationships with his family, colleagues, and friends grew distant. His business ventures began to collapse.
Life as he knew it came to a screeching halt when he was arrested on a charge of underage ography possession in 2014. Shea was convicted and served six months in jail in early 2016. Following his arrest, he sought help and treatment through intense one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and at inpatient rehab facilities. He has been sober almost four years.
Bothered at the lack of quality resources and open discussion around the topic of ography addiction, Shea is now sharing with the public his experience with the addiction in the hope he can help people to not head down the same road that he did.
Shea recounts the last several years of his life leading up to his legal trouble and how his poor judgment and bad decision making led to a life he never thought was possible
