play

06/02/21 • 57 min

I sat down with Susan Cushman, Susan is an Author and grandmother who resides in Memphis Tennessee. She will be releasing her seventh book on June eighth entitled John and Mary Margret. While Susan and I will explore her writing career, we will also be exploring her Better To story about adopting three children and the life journey, and the inspiration it created for her.

*****

Bio: Author, Susan Cushman, is announcing her latest book, John and Mary Margaret (Koelher Books, June 4, 2021). John and Mary Margaret is a rare insider’s look into the white privilege bubble of a young girl growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, and participating in sorority life on the Ole Miss campus in the late 1960s. But it’s also a candid portrayal of a young Black boy from Memphis who follows his dream to study law at a predominantly white university. What happens when their shared love for literature blossoms into an ill-fated romance? Spanning five decades of historical civil rights events in Mississippi and Memphis, John and Mary Margaret’s story will challenge the status quo and give us another opportunity to examine our history and our hearts. Susan Cushman sets John and Mary Margaret, her second novel and seventh book, in her home state of Mississippi and her current city of Memphis. Cushman’s published books include Friends of the Library (short stories), Cherry Bomb (novel), Tangles and Plaques: A Mother and Daughter Face Alzheimer’s (memoir), and three anthologies she edited. Susan writes with deep insight into the South’s storied past, bringing elements of hope and healing to her short stories, memoir, and novels – honoring the heart, soul, and history of the South. Susan is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She is a resident of Memphis, TN. Book Details: John and Mary Margaret is an insider's look into the White-privilege bubble of a young girl growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, and participating in sorority life on the Ole Miss campus in the late 1960s. But it's also a candid portrayal of a young Black boy from Memphis who follows his dream to study law at the predominately White university. What happens when their shared love for literature blossoms into an ill-fated romance? Set squarely in the center of decades of historical events in Mississippi and Memphis, here their story brings those events to life.

The Chicago native, who currently resides in Portland, talks about her move to London. We also talk about her music-inspired lipstick line for the Event Cosmetics line and the most important thing, her music. We discuss the recording of her live album as well as how she has been practicing her Grammy acceptance speech since she was a kid.
*******
Kingsley’s unique and unforgettable voice will warm you up and melt you down. Her presence is captivating and overwhelming, she sings only on her personal experiences of life, love, and her journey of becoming Kingsley. Kingsley doesn’t just stick with one genre, her vocal can do anything - her song are influenced by pop to R&B and anything in between! Kingsley has been making strong headway with opening up for acts like Elise Trouw, VHS Collection and SG Lewis!

KINGSLEY COLLECTION x EVENT COSMETICS

It was the middle of summer in 2020 when the dust finally settled, like most musicians,

Kingsley was at the point of breaking. Giving up on everything due to the burdens of a

pandemic, Kingsley spent her time trying to rediscover what made her happy in life since

she couldn’t perform/tour.

She used the downtime to look for creative ways to make revenue - i.e driving for Uber Eats. Alast, an opportunity of a lifetime rose.

Kingsley met Katherine, a longtime downtown Portland WOC shop owner of Event Cosmetics a while back through a mutual friend and loved spending time talking to her about life, music, and beauty, but the two never imagined life would lead them to collaborate. One day adventuring downtown to get air, Kingsley stopped in Katherine’s shop, both venting about how life had really hit their professions with a curveball.

Suddenly a light went off, they figured instead of seeing the bad, they would collaborate and create their own good. Katherine spent most of the rest of the year researching everything about Kingsley. What made her personally so vibrant, confident, and bold. What beauty product could embody her and aspire others to be their best self. Kingsley Collection by Event Cosmetic was born! The collection is c3, high luxurious lipstick named after Kingsley’s three singles from her upcoming album, “Crying On Holidays.”

Better To... Podcast with D. M. Needom - Seeing the Energy of Life

Seeing the Energy of Life

Better To... Podcast with D. M. Needom

play

04/14/21 • 75 min

Today I sit down with Linn Purdon to discuss how she sees the world differently. For her, the world is kind of like the Matrix, but instead of numbers and code, she sees it in colors. Well, that's how it started out. Now it has grown to encompass all the senses. Her Better To moment was because of her gift. When she discovered she had this ability, she went to tell her mom but knew it wouldn't be received well, so she twisted and contorted who she was so she could fit in. Besides her gift, her family's religion took her away from a "normal" childhood. She had to figure out what it was like to fit in as she entered her teen years. Normally that is hard but imagine not being exposed to the things you had as a kid and being thrust into a whole different world. In this episode, we explore what happened to her for not embracing her gift and looking at how children just know things. Playing in others' energy, growing up, and relearning to embrace our inner brilliance are more topics we discuss. Lastly, we discuss the idea of perfection and how he can stop our energy flow.  You can find out more about Linn at Linnpurdon.com as well as on Facebook in her group Whole Being Business and Life and her other group Linn's Lab.

Bio: For the rest of my childhood I did all that I could to twist away from the ability to see and communicate with energy. I studied others and tried on their energy habits, endlessly trying to fit in.

In my thirties, bed ridden, broke and a single parent I decided I had had enough.

It was TIME to BE Me - as I was born.

I would love to say that I became healthy, wealthy and loved overnight but I can’t.

However it did happen.

Gradually I experimented claiming back the ability to see energy - very quietly at first, but as the results flowed in I became more convinced that I was on the right path.

Eventually I spoke to others  and with great delight discovered I could help them to align to their Unique Inner Brilliance too.

I now understand that we each intend a Unique Vibrational Blueprint as we put on our  'human coat"' and we don’t leave our enormous Universal Self behind.  In fact  when we align the two MAGIC HAPPENS.

Aligning your energy in this way allows JOY to flow with ease. This is important as JOY is your vibrational blood.  As it pumps through your energy matrix it naturally attracts vitality, abundance and freedom.

I am totally convinced that we are energetically designed for EASE.

Edward and I discuss how at 70 he tried to find his birth mother. He thought she was a high school kid, who accidentally got pregnant, but once he started digging, he discovered she was much more than that.
*****
Edward Di Gangi is the author of The Gift Best Given: A Memoir, published in May of 2020. Through three years of research, Di Gangi found that his mother had been a celebrity performer in the glamorous ice show spectaculars of the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to recounting his own story, the author details his mother's life and travels beginning with the time she left home in New York at the age of 17 to travel alone by train across the country to join a traveling ice skating troupe. Five years later and unexpectedly pregnant, she returned home, known only to her eldest sister and her sister's husband, to manage the birth and the adoption of her son.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Professor Pete Alexander to discuss all things stress-related. Stress can affect us in more ways than we realize, and today we talk about some of the biggest culprits, ourselves, and our thinking. We discuss stress related to not just work but caregiving, relationships, and more. He also offers us some tips on how to help ourselves.

Here are some Tips from Professor Pete

During Professor Pete’s career, he had the privilege to work in various positions, including Sales, Marketing, College Professor, and Small Business Owner. Each role had one thing in common - high stress - to the point they diagnosed him with stress-related diabetes and ended up in the hospital with a severe case of diabetic ketoacidosis, a few hours away from being comatose. It was a reality check for him. When you don’t have your health, not much else matters. He knew it was time to walk away even though he had a great job, secure income, and wonderful benefits. Interestingly, his coworkers and peers were very supportive, and most of them told him they admired his decision to put his health first before his career because they were contemplating the same thing. He realized then that it wasn’t just him. Now, he has dedicated his professional career to helping other hard-driving leaders avoid his mistakes and immensely benefit from the wonderful tools and techniques He has learned and experienced first-hand. Besides a regular video blog series, he launched a book on Amazon, an international bestseller.
