On July 22, 2011, he accompanied his sister, Schyler, to the American Idol auditions in North Charleston, SC. The judges, Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez recognized Colton Dixon from the previous season and asked him to audition too. Both Schyler and Colton Dixon received Golden Tickets to perform in Hollywood. In the end, Colton made it to the Top 7. Just 9 months after he was eliminated from the show, Colton released his debut album, “A Messenger”, which made it to #15 on the Billboard Top 200, and #1 on Billboard’s Top Christian albums.

In May of 2020, Colton released a self-titled EP, the first on his new Atlantic Records label. The album includes hits, “Miracles” and “Devil is a Liar”.

I recently sat down with Colton Dixon to discuss some new opportunities in his career, challenges, and a couple of new Miracles in his life. We’ll even check in on his sister, Schyler, to see what she is up to.

You will be encouraged as you hear how God is using Colton in 2020 amidst all the craziness and uncertainty. If you need some encouragement today, take a break and listen to Colton Dixon from Behind the Mike.

Behind the Wire Ministries
Well, I would love for you to give your undivided attention to today’s episode. It’s raw and real, and it’s going to challenge the way you view your life. I’m going to start by asking a simple question...have you ever been in prison? Have you ever been bound in chains and shackles? Before you answer, I need to expound a bit.

Today’s guest is Pastor Scott Highberger. Scott’s story is about freedom. I’m not sure I’ve met anyone who is more qualified to talk about freedom than Scott. Like all of us, Scott has a past. Beginning at age 12, Scott was arrested 35 times, he had 8 felony convictions and 5 prison sentences. As I spoke with Scott and heard his unbelievable story, I began to feel like I couldn’t fully relate. I was raised in church all my life. I was never considered a troublemaker, except for maybe a couple of years in high school. My record with the law is no more than a couple of traffic tickets.

Yet, Scott explained that his story is very much like my own. He explained that we don’t have to be physically incarcerated to be a prisoner. He says, “Freedom isn’t just about a physical location; it’s a spiritual condition. There’s an invisible prison that holds many in its grip...”

So I ask you again...have you ever been in prison? Have you ever been bound in chains and shackles? How about Addiction? Depression? Anxiety? Fear? Loneliness? What about Guilt? Shame? Regret?

Scott has a book called, “Behind the Wire: A Prisoner’s Journey to the Pulpit”. It reads much like a devotional and he has generously gifted us with a limited number of copies for podcast listeners. Be sure to listen to the end of the podcast to learn how you can get a free copy!

Scott’s story is also making its way to the big screen. This feature film stars Joey Lawrence and Michael W. Smith. We’ll give you some more information about the release of “Pardoned by Grace”, which will be released in 2021.

As you listen to Scott share his story today, we would like for you to consider those invisible prisons that are keeping you Behind the Wire. Scott will talk about how to break free from those prisons and discover the path to true freedom.

We invite you to listen to Pastor Scott Highberger share his story of living Behind the Wire and his journey to the pulpit, from Behind the Mike.

Behind The Mike Podcast - Living Boldly as a Christian in Today's World
play

08/23/24 • 39 min

What does it mean to truly understand and embrace Christianity? Fourth-generation restaurant owner and multifaceted entrepreneur Peter Demos shares his captivating transformation from a religious skeptic to a committed Christian. Discover how Peter's journey through the family restaurant business, a brief stint in law, and his eventual return to manage multiple ventures led him to confront his misconceptions about faith and develop a genuine relationship with Christ. This episode promises a deep dive into Peter's personal history, the challenges he faced, and the pivotal moments that reshaped his spiritual path.
Raising children in today's ever-changing cultural landscape can be daunting, especially for Christian parents. Peter Demos offers invaluable insights into navigating these challenges by integrating faith into everyday life. From historical conflicts over religious texts in schools to the current exclusion of prayer and the promotion of secular beliefs, Peter underscores the importance of parents actively teaching and modeling their faith. He warns against superficial religious practices and emphasizes the need for authentic, lived-out faith that intertwines biblical history with general education, providing a roadmap for Christian parenting in the modern world.
Our conversation also touches on the critical intersection of faith and politics. Peter discusses the vital role believers must play in the political realm while staying true to their faith, challenging the misconception that Jesus avoided political issues. Through real-world examples of the tension between faith and political mandates, Peter highlights the necessity of spreading the gospel to influence culture and politics. Inspired by the Book of Daniel, he calls for a boldness in faith and reflects on the hope for a less divisive political climate in future elections. Tune in for an episode packed with profound insights and practical advice on living boldly as a Christian.

What happens when one person's darkest tragedy becomes a beacon of hope for countless others?
Davey Blackburn joins us to share his powerful story of unimaginable loss and unwavering faith. In 2015, Davey's pregnant wife, Amanda, was tragically shot during a home invasion. He recounts the heart-wrenching discovery and the initial hope for her survival, offering an intimate look at his journey through the aftermath. Through his harrowing experience, Davey emphasizes that pain is a universal human experience and encourages listeners to find resilience in their own struggles.
Navigating his profound loss, Davey faced the daunting question of how a loving God could allow such suffering. Surrounded by a community of strong faith, he found solace in their collective belief in God's goodness. A divine moment with the song "Nothing is Wasted" reminded him that even in the most tragic circumstances, there is potential for redemption and purpose. Drawing parallels to Amanda's talent for transforming discarded items into treasures, Davey shares how he believes God repurposes our pain for a greater purpose.
In the journey towards healing, Davey learned to confront his grief head-on, encouraged by a timely message from Pastor Levi Lesko to "run toward the roar." This transformative experience led him to create the "Nothing is Wasted" book and the "Pain to Purpose" curriculum, designed to help others navigate their valleys of grief. Davey's path also led to forgiveness and restorative justice, showcasing the power of faith and community in overcoming tragedy. Join us as we explore how, even in the darkest times, nothing is truly wasted when we trust in a higher purpose.

Last week, we had a conversation with Brittni De La Mora, who had spent 7 years in the porn industry. She shared that during those 7 years, she hated herself and wanted to commit suicide. That was before God rescued her.
Today, we get a perspective from the consumer side of that industry and the damage it causes to individuals, marriages, and families.
Our guests are Emmanuel and Bekah Guarino. Emmanuel began consuming porn at a young age, which quickly turned into an addiction. After meeting his soon-to-be wife, Bekah, he had hoped things would change. He decided to quit porn 90 days prior to their wedding. That turned into 60 days, then 30 days. The night before their wedding Emmanuel says he can still remember what he searched for to get his fix. The couple recalls their wedding night when porn-induced ED left them both hurt and frustrated.
Bekah shares how that was the start of a long difficult journey to finding a solution to save their marriage, which had just begun. As we shared last week, 56% of marriages that end in divorce are the result of one spouse being consumed by a porn addiction. Bekah made the decision that she was not going to let them be a statistic. They began the healing process together, as a couple.
Today, they are reaching out to couples who are struggling as they did, through “Team Vulnerable”. In this conversation, they walk through the steps they took together to overcome Emmanuel’s porn addiction. Through the team approach, they can heal together. They both know the vulnerabilities that Emmanuel has and can work together to continue that healing process.
Today is the last of our 2-part series on the destruction caused by pornography. As we mentioned last week, statistics reveal that up to 70% of men in the church are watching porn on a regular basis, and up to 33% of women in the church are also watching regularly.

Behind The Mike Podcast - #002 - Dewey Harris | Anxiety & Depression
play

01/06/20 • 45 min

In this episode, we have invited pastor & Biblical counselor, Dewey Harris to join us Behind the Mike.
Dewey offers hope to those who are struggling with depression through a biblical perspective. Having experienced anxiety and depression throughout his childhood, and with it all culminating in his college years, Dewey understands the struggles well.
Some of the references from Dewey in this podcast for help:

-----------------------------------------------
Quote from Martin Luther:
“Feelings come and feelings go,
And feelings are deceiving;
My warrant is the Word of God--
Naught else is worth believing.
Though all my heart should feel condemned
For want of some sweet token,
There is One greater than my heart
Whose Word cannot be broken.
I'll trust in God's unchanging Word
Till soul and body sever,
For, though all things shall pass away,
HIS WORD SHALL STAND FOREVER!”
― Martin Luther
-------------------------------------------------
Psalm 42 reference from David:
1 As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
3 My tears have been my food
day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
a multitude keeping festival.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation 6 and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.
8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God, my rock:
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

Behind The Mike Podcast - #021 - Trudy Cathy White | Chick-fil-A | “Never Give Up!”
play

06/29/20 • 43 min

This week’s episode is titled, “Never Give Up!”—a theme that was instilled in today’s guest by her mother. You may have heard about Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, through his books, interviews, and articles. But you probably didn’t know that Truett attributed much of the success of Chick-fil-A to his wife, Jeanette.

I recently had the privilege of having a conversation with Trudy Cathy White, the only daughter of Truett & Jeanette Cathy. Trudy and I will be talking her new book, “A Quiet Strength” a memoir of her mother.

Throughout our conversation together, you will hear stories from Trudy about how Chick-fil-A really got started, the leadership principles that propel the organization, and the “secret sauce” behind the success of Chick-fil-A (hint: it’s has nothing to do with chicken), and really the secret to being successful in life.

We discuss the influence that we all have in life, how to leave your legacy, and living each day with purpose!

Trudy released a new book this spring, “A Quiet Strength: The Life and Legacy of Jeanette M. Cathy”. We also talked about her book, which describes at not only a memoir of her mother, but also ‘shares Jeanette’s often unbelievable misadventures raising three children on the Cathy farm—from beekeeping fiascos to regularly chasing a pony, a parrot, and a monkey around her living room.’ Wow, and I thought I had a fun childhood!

Again, our conversation centers around Jeanette Cathy’s theme of “Never Give Up!”. If you struggling to find purpose and meaning in your life, my conversation with Trudy will encourage you to not only find your life’s purpose—because we all have one—but to live it out with passion!

So sit back, take a breather from your day and listen to my interview with Trudy Cathy White...you’ll be glad you did!

If you haven’t already noticed, we are in an election year. This is, without a doubt, the most highly charged election season that I can remember. If it were up to me, I’d say that coronavirus is plenty for us to handle. However, on top of the virus (and all of the effects of it—job loss, quarantines, and loss of lives), we have added racial tensions, rioting in our cities, an exceptionally tense political race, hurricanes, derechos, wildfires, and we still have 4 months left in 2020!

Leaders across our country are making decisions no one ever thought we would have to consider. From city councils, mayors, and governors, to Congress and the White House. There is probably no better word to use for this time in our history than “unprecedented”.

It can be easy for us to have the ‘correct’ responses and answers to the problems we face, so I asked Christina Muryn, Mayor of my city, the City of Findlay, Ohio, to join me on this episode to give some perspective. The majority of you listening probably don’t know anything about Findlay, Ohio. We are a city of approximately 42,000 people in northwestern Ohio. We are the headquarters to corporations such as Marathon Petroleum, and Cooper Tire, we have major distribution centers such as Kohl’s and Best Buy, and we are proud of our Findlay City Schools and Trojan High School athletics.

Mayor Muryn shares some insight into her decision-making, whether it is everyday city operations issues or now, the challenges from COVID-19, protests and riots, and economic threats that face our cities. Mayor Muryn is wise beyond her years and offers hope, regardless of what city you call home.

Our conversation is centered around our faith. Mayor Muryn is a Christ-follower and talks about how whether her faith plays any part in her decisions as mayor of a growing Ohio city.

Our conversation of hope is for everyone, everywhere—not just for Findlay, Ohio. I know you will be encouraged and inspired as we hear from Mayor Christina Muryn, from Behind the Mike.
