9 - Childebert III
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
09/21/21 • 54 min
This episode is chock-a-block, not just with the ramblings of 2 nerds who have been in Covid-19 Lockdown for too long, but also with events that are happening in the world around Childebert III (all of which he has little to no effect over).
Later in the episode, Eliza will give us a little "News Update" on what's happening outside of our little slice of the Dark Ages. This week we're going to Central and South America, where a ruler called "Eighteen Rabbit" is a direct contemporary of Childebert III.

Ben and Eliza each give a score out of 10 for the first 4 categories. The 5th is determined by maths! The result is a total score out of 100.
- Enchanté: The shallow, first-impressions round: How fabulous and iconic an image have they passed down to us?
- En Garde: (A.K.A. “Selfish Wins”) How well did they gain and increase their personal power, either through scheming, statesmanship or good old fashion battles?
- Voulez-Vous: (A.K.A. “Selfless Wins”) How much would we want to live under their regime? How well did they better the world around them through law reforms and cultural projects?
- Ouh-Là-Là: How pearl-clutchingly scandalous were the events of their life, both in their time and down through the ages? How mad, bad and dangerous were they to know?
- La Vie en Throne: How many years did they reign, and how many of their children survived them?

11 - Chilperic II (Daniel)
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
10/05/21 • 42 min
After spending a number of episodes tucked away in a monastery, it's time for Daniel to come out and take the spotlight ... with mixed results! He is largely overshadowed by the epic showdown between Charles Martel and Ragenfrid.
Also in the third and final of our "news segments", we are going to take a peak at what's going on in the Byzantine Empire, as they face the rising threat of the Umayyad Caliphate which will soon also strike the Franks...

How will Margot's rollercoaster end, and how will she rate compared to the rest of the Valois clan?

12/09/24 • 77 min
How will "Good King Henry" fare as we rate him? We know he spent his reign fighting, drinking and womanising, but what did he do for France? And more importantly, was he really the second coming of Hercules?
Let is know what you thought of Henry, and whether he deserves the fate we've given him...

58 - Henry IV, Part 1
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
12/02/24 • 80 min
We're back!!! And we're starting off a new royal line with Henry IV, the first Bourbon king. Is this stinky, ill-mannered heretic really the hero France has been waiting for after 30 years of civil war?
Stay tuned for Part 2 next week, when we will rate Henry and decide whether he deserves the guillotine.

48.5 - Joan of Arc (Part 1)
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
11/26/23 • 56 min
The Maid of Orléans is well-known for having taken the intricate chessboard of the Hundred Years' War, tipped it upside down, kicked it across a field and scored a game-changing goal for the Blues after decades of decline.
In the first of her well-earned 2-parter, we follow Joan of Arc's rise to prominence from peasant to saviour, and conclude at the moment of her greatest glory. But that means it's all downhill into tragedy and scandal for Part 2...

36 - Philip II Augustus (Part 2)
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
10/05/22 • 83 min
In the second episode on Philip II's jam-packed reign, we step back and look at the broader picture, considering how Philip ruled, the impact he made on France, and whether he truly deserved the epithet "Augustus". He quadroupled the royal domain, he cleaned up the city of Paris and he ushered in a cultural golden age. But his dealings with the Jews and Cathars gave us pause; this king is no angel.

36 - Philip II Augustus (Part 1)
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
09/27/22 • 109 min
Though he's often overshadowed by his flashy ex-boyfriend Richard the Lionheart, Philip II is one of the most famous medieval kings for a reason. So much happens in his reign, that he is the first monarch since Charlemagne who gets a two-part episode! But things aren't looking good for France at the end of Louis VII's llacklustre reign, which saw the Angevin Empire gobble up the Left of France. Through strategic marriages, sneaky plots and a crusade so stressful it made all his hair fall out, will Philip be able to turn things around, and live up to the epithet Augustus?
Join us next week for Part 2, when we delve deeper into how Philip reigned and find out whether he was an ingenious nation-builder or a piggish vampire!

11/28/22 • 108 min
When Louis IX comes of age, taking over from his mother and regent Blanche, France finds itself at the apex of its medieval golden age. The young king manages to prove his mettle fending off English invasions and internal rebellions, bringing the royal domain's power to new heights.

47 - Charles V (Part 2)
Battle Royale: French Monarchs
06/19/23 • 64 min
In the second half of our Charles V episode, we give him his scores and decide whether or not he should be admitted to the Battle Royale Tournament.
In this episode, we get to see in great detail what Charles's court was like, thanks to the writing of Christine de Pizan (A WOMAN?!), plus we delve into some trouble in paradise between him and his cousin-wife Joan of Bourbon. Also he, like us, is a big fan of castles and libraries, and stayed away from forests and horses...
