BA BLOCKS for Business Analysts - 1: How to Create a Fulfilling Business Analysis Career
play

10/21/19 • 14 min

You’re going to spend the majority of your waking hours working at your job. It only makes sense to spend that time doing work that improves the overall quality of your life.

Career fulfillment is perhaps the most important subject to consider when thinking about the future of your business analysis career. It is also likely the subject you will think about the least. This is the reason that I dedicated the first episode of this show to the topic of career fulfillment.

Question From Our Member

This episode also contains a comprehensive answer to the question asked by one of the members of the BA BLOCKS community:

What is the role of the BA on agile project teams? Should they be part of the scrum team, or should they be outside of the scrum team working with the product owners to prioritize backlog items?

BA BLOCKS for Business Analysts - 7: How To Ace Your Next Business Analyst Interview (Part 1)
play

08/19/20 • 23 min

Interviewing for a new role can be a stressful experience for many of us, but there are things you can do to improve your chances of passing the interview with flying colors.

Rishi and I recently sat down for a mock interview where Rishi talked to us about his experiences and skills. In this interview, I played the role of the hiring manager and asked the types of questions that interviewers would normally ask of a senior business analyst.

Interview Questions We Covered

  1. Tell us a little about yourself.
  2. Can you talk a little about a project where things have not gone so well?
  3. What is your approach to dealing with stakeholders who don’t understand their own business needs well?
  4. How do you deal with a situation when two director-level executives disagree on what your project should be delivering?
  5. Can you talk about your experiences working with a development team that has high expectations from their business analysts?
  6. Can you tell me a little about how your programming background is a factor in your business analysis career?
  7. On a larger project that requires the involvement of a business analysis team, do you see yourself as more of a team member or more of a BA team lead?
  8. Would you be comfortable managing more junior analysts on such a project?

BA BLOCKS for Business Analysts - 8: Customer Requirements for COTS vs. Custom Built Solutions
play

04/26/21 • 14 min

Business analysts can find themselves on projects that deliver many different types of solutions. Most business analysis training programs do not address this aspect of our jobs, yet, it makes such a big difference in the way we do our analysis work to produce business requirements and specifications.

In this episode, I define COTS and custom-build solutions and provide you with a few good examples of how delivering each type of solution affects the way you do business analysis for your clients/employers.

This episode is just a small part of the conversation that we had in a 1-hour live session inside our community.

play

08/10/20 • 21 min

Agile software development is one of the most widely misunderstood concepts in the IT industry. This episode contains my discussion with Dean Kulaweera during his #TechTalks interview on LinkedIn live.

We start the discussion off with some basic definitions and then we move quickly into answering the following questions.

03:16 Can you explain what a business analyst is?
04:28 What is agile?
06:13 Most organizations are not a good fit for pure agile.
09:51 Less than 5% of business analyst roles are pure agile.
11:48 What is hybrid-agile and is it effective?
14:19 Why do companies claim to be pure agile when they're really hybrid agile?
15:42 Can you comment on hybrid-agile being used in most organizations?
16:45 If my team developed software, which methodology do you suggest we use? Agile or Hybrid-agile.
18:52 What are some of the key challenges in getting developers to move to more of an agile approach?
