Wow this episode is going to be music to your ears! I had the honour of hosting another episode with David Grand, Founder and Developer of Brainspotting Therapy. In recent years there has been an explosion in ‘parts work’ in psychotherapy, coaching and associated healing approaches. In this episode David explores the relationships between explicit and implicit parts. Within the realms of the all-important uncertainty, he proposes an explicit, rational and identifiable, left hemispheric conceptualisation of a part can be important, yet constricted. He refers to implicit parts as a deeper and richer approach to the abundance of internal information available to each person which is neither frozen in time nor space. Implicit parts are like holograms, evolving up out of multiple layers of information across our development in this lifetime and intergenerationally. The Western mind may feel seduced into simplifying this and close the model of therapy to restricted information to secure clarification and focussed analysis, but in doing so we inhibit the vast and innate wisdom of the implicit parts and all therein. David explains how in Brainspotting the therapist holds an open model approach, to create a unique space for the person to access, process and heal from the richness of all parts, as with the subtle vibrational interrelationship between all strings on a guitar of infinite strings, and indeed spaces between.

This episode is with the soulful Dr Roby Ables, Psychotherapist, and Senior Brainspotting Trainer based in Australia. Have you every wondered:

How addiction attracts so much shame?
What’s trauma got to do with addiction?
When addiction 'works'?
Is there a connection between addiction to drugs, alcohol, porn, shopping and eating issues
How can love and conscious awareness really help in healing trauma and pain?

To answer these questions, Roby is incredibly generous in sharing her personal experiences of intergenerational trauma, early life attachment wounds and her subsequent journey through addiction and into many years of recovery. It is so enthralling to hear how addiction became her guide into her healing and how trust, faith and incredible spiritual transcendence uplifted her at a time of great distress. Here we learn about the significance of trauma in addiction patterns and the multi layers of inter and intrapersonal connections that are central on the path of healing. Throughout we can hear the importance of the soul in healing addiction and associated mental health problems as Roby personifies the power of relational healing through Brainspotting Therapy and the potential of plant based medicine.

This is a fascinating episode for all those that are truly interested in approaches to healing. Sometimes I hear the question, "what is the mechanism for true healing?" I wonder if this question takes us further from the truth that we are seeking to discover. Sometimes we have to go backwards before we an go forwards. In this episode Pablo's expertise in Eastern approaches to healing provide the scaffold for all things sacred in contemporary approaches to therapy. Pablo is a yoga/meditation teacher and trainer in wisdom philosophies. I am astounded by the resonance between the sutras of Pentanjali, written at the turn of the common era (BC to CE) and the much more recent fundamentals of Brainspotting Therapy (Dr David Grand). We hear in this amazing episode how both approaches build on stillness, space, non-judgemental awareness, and non-duality. We learn how the non-attachment to vikalpa (imaginal constructs) affords a transcendental state as the sometimes disruptive power of the egoic consciousness is inhibited . This journey is a deep one and we hear how abhinivesha can transport people from a false identification with death and the temporary physical nature of the world in pursuit of a mocksha, or nirvana. How's this for a fundamental response to those looking to heal from trauma and find enlightenment?!

My guest this episode is Brooke Randolph, author, speaker, and trainer. She specialities are Adoption, Brainspotting, relationships, and developmental trauma. She's a a certified Imago Relationship Therapist, a Certified Brainspotting Trainer & Consultant, and coordinator for the groups Brainspotting Indy and Brainspotting with Adoption.
In this episode it is fascinating to hear how Brooke gives first hand insights into the complexity of adoption and childhood attachment trauma. Through her experience and expertise in therapy she has developed an approach that seeks to facilitate natural healing in appreciation of the innate wisdom of the internal system and the limitless implicit wisdom therein. Brooke speaks to the challenges of working with those with complex attachment trauma histories and how therapists and attachment figures can benefit from fully meeting the child's expression of their emotional world unconditionally to let their system feel heard, felt and to facilitate co-regulation.
She expands on how the pressures of time and expectation of outcome can inadvertently impede the sense of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship. Instead, she tells us, as we prioritise the relationship and accept that this takes time, then we create the conditions for deep, long-lasting healing and rewarding relationships.

Awe in Trauma - The Power of Sound (with Darren Abrahams)
play

08/31/22 • 57 min

Darren is an inspiration to those that aspire towards facilitating trauma healing on an individual, communal and global level. From being an opera singer he’s found himself on a journey to deep inner healing through the use of embodied approaches and sound which he has brought to many traumatised and displaced communities across the world. This podcast explores:

How can safety, belonging and expansion be achieved with displaced people?

How can those not trained as therapists be an essential therapeutic presence with those in trauma?

How can the power of sound assist in establishing emotional regulation?

Can sound be an effective medium in healing deep cultural wounds and taking us towards interpersonal peace and global harmony?

Darren eloquently describes how a balance of hope and his reluctance to force outcomes has facilitated some blossoming achievements in training may non therapists in doing deep healing work through promoting emotional regulation, interpersonal connection and inner safety. From this stable foundation his teams have supported many to thrive and experience personal expansion as they reconnect with their people and purpose. In a world where so many institutions and leaders have lost their way in terms of integrity and meeting the needs of their people, his groups continue to hold compassion, collaboration, coregulation and love as the powerful central guiding principles to humanity and deep healing. An inspiration and refocus on the true purpose of togetherness.

Awe in Trauma - Equine Therapy Connection (with Mary-Joy Johnson)
play

11/28/22 • 59 min

This episode is a wonderful exploration into the immense natural inter-relational power of healing with horses. Mary Joy is an equine facilitated psycho traumatologist working with horses psychotherapeutically with a range of people including, children, adults and families. She facilitates such therapy with war veterans too and others with PTSD. In this episode we get a first hand sense of how Mary-Joy initially became captivated with equine therapy as she explored deeper healing in her own life. From here she completed the trainings to provide equine therapy for so many others, with her colleagues, from her centre in East Sussex. She explains how the approach seeks to liberate the horses as well as the people seeking healing through the profound trust in the deep implicit interpersonal resonance and regulation together. The horses have an immense capacity to feel into the person's system and to be with it in a way that is simply divine. From here there is so much to potential to heal, learn and experience a way of being that is so natural and ancient as it allows us to access something sacred that has been available for all time.

Awe in Trauma - Ancestral Healing (with Dr Ruby Gibson)
play

02/24/22 • 57 min

In this episode it is apparent just how much love and heart Ruby brings to all of her relationships in her healing work. It's striking how her approach to others opens a different form of awareness that allows an opportunity to consider and become more familiar with another level of conscious awareness. These qualities go beyond words.
Psychology and psychotherapy are revealing some fascinating advances in the power of recognising and working with ancestors to shift trauma and achieve greater emotional wellbeing. Dr Ruby Gibson discusses with Mark how her work in trauma healing with Native American populations seeks to focus on Brainspotting and other embodied approaches to access up to 7 generations in the past and influence 7 into the future. She explains how our bodies are much like archaeological sites that hold artefacts of our transgenerational past and accessing this implicit memory can bring profound healing.
"I believe it's the occupation of our generation to remember. We have the resources, the capacity, and time to begin remembering our familial and ancestral stories. We are not simply remembering for ourselves. What we can remember we can potentially cure. And that cure lightens the burden of the ancestors who came before us. From what I've seen, they are waiting for this generation to clean up some things that they weren't able to clean up. And we are also lightening up he load for the next 7 generations. " Dr Ruby Gibson
