Automovie Podcast - The Dax Shepard Double Bill
play

03/08/21 • 63 min

In honour of the new series of Top Gear America, hosted by Dax Shepard with Rob Corddry and Jethro Bovingdon, Chris and Marty watch a double bill of Dax movies with Hit and Run and CHiPs. In other news, Marty drinks some whisky and Chris wants to be a racing driver.

But first, Drive to Survive Season 3 has been announced to arrive on Netflix on March 19th. The Australian V8 series have also added a lot of old races to their YouTube channel.

Chris and Marty also review Top Gear America, now streaming on Motortrend and hosted by Dax Shepard with Rob Corddry and Jethro Bovingdon. While this is not available in the UK directly, it can be with a VPN.

With Dax front and centre, this is a good opportunity to review two films written, directed and starring Dax. Chris talks Hit and Run (2012) while Marty discusses CHIPS (2017).

Since our last episode Henry Catchpole has gone to Hethel for Lotus Elise Sport 240 - The LAST EVER Elise.

For our YouTube picks, Chris has just finished building a Lego Bugatti Chiron so has picked a video looking at how a full sized Lego Bugatti was built and run under its own power. At the other end of the scale is Chris's channel pick - The HERO-ERA. This is historic, long distance rallying recorded by HERO-ERA (Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation) for those who love properly old cars doing properly epic rally routes.

Marty picks a classic of David Evans in an Elise at the Bathurst Mount Panorama circuit, finding gaps where they shouldn't exist, and moving through the grid at pace. For a channel, it's the compelling, honest vTuned Garage rebuilding all manner of cars.

Automovie Podcast - Episode 6: Car Chase Musicals
play

09/22/19 • 55 min

In this episode of the Automotive Podcast we talk about our favourite car chase musicals, featuring Baby Driver and The Blues Brothers. We also give our (spoiler-free!) thoughts on the first season of Netflix's Hyperdrive, and we can't work out how to pronounce C'était un rendez-vous. But first Chris and Marty discuss the finale of Netflix's Hyperdrive (https://www.netflix.com/title/80189648) and how there are Behind the Scenes videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6ZHDN45TEg) coming out now on YouTube from the competitors. Following on from our BMW Film Festival, we are told about a Mercedes Choose Your Own Adventure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZLCDVpMpCg) advertising campaign during the X-Factor, and The Road Rat magazine (https://theroadrat.com) publishes a Richard Porter (https://twitter.com/sniffpetrol/status/1173572917512298497) piece where he watches all the Fast & Furious films in one sitting. Our type of man! For the release of Ford vs Ferrari (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1950186/) (never Le Mans 66 in our parish!), reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival are in. First thoughts seem average, but we're still looking forward to it! For this episode Martin discusses Baby Driver (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3890160/) while Chris revels in The Blues Brothers (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080455/). And for this week's highlights, Martin’s been watching the Goodwood Revival 2019 AC Cobra battle in the RAC TT Celebration Trophy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekVQX6tMy78) with tweed, flat caps, glorious Goodwood, Spitfires, the Hun, beer with bits in it, Stirling Moss GOODWOOD. Meanwhile Chris has been continuing obsession with historically viral videos, this time with Alex Roy analyising C'était un rendez-vous (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmdR6B1DPac). Automovie Podcast - Being Racing Drivers

Being Racing Drivers

Automovie Podcast

play

06/08/20 • 59 min

In this episode, we review documentaries about amateurs being racing drivers in their spare time. Plus, we discuss how F1 will return to our screens and when an Eleanor meets a legal challenge...

The B is for Build YouTube channel has hit a problem where a backdated Mustang was being converted into an Eleanor replica from Gone in 60 seconds. However, a legal challenge from the copyright owner has seen the car seized and videos removed.

F1 have announced plans to race, with Ted's Notebook giving a great overview of some of the social distancing measures being put in place.

In this episode Chris revisits Eric Bana's Love the Beast, while Martin watches The Gentleman Driver.

For the YouTube picks this week, Chris picked a video of Obsessed Garage's Matt Moreman, talking about the therapeutic benefits of being a YouTuber to overcome his OCD. It's also worth watching his What's it like to own a supercar with OCD? too. In fact, Chris recommends the whole VINwiki Car Stories YouTube channel.

Martin's video focusses on just 22.86 seconds of Jos Goodyear at Shelsey Walsh - 22sec run. For those who love seeing what highly depreciated, interesting cars with issues are like, Hoovies Garage is the channel for you!

Automovie Podcast - Death Race: Carradine vs Statham
play

01/25/23 • 81 min

On our first episode of 2023, Chris and Marty compare 1975's Death Race 2000 and 2008's Death Race, reflect on the work of Ken Block, catch up on all the good car content that was released over Christmas and argue about whether Drive to Survive still appeals to F1 fans.

But first, we discuss the sad passing of Ken Block and the legacy he leaves behind, the remake of Bullitt, is this the end of the Grand Tour? and Drive to Survive is out Feb 24th!

Since the last episode, we've been watching loads of Car Trek - both in episodes and the Oregon Fail special - Michael Fassbender actually completes the Road to Le Mans (Or does he?). Evo's Car of the Year is actually good again. Chris starts watching the Bernie story 'Lucky', all the Gymkhana films, a short film about Group B rallying starring Richard Madden, the real story behind Mighty Car Mods and Turbos and Temples 3.

For our reviews we compare Death Race 2000 (1975) and Death Race (2008).

In What Has Henry Catchpole Been Driving This Week? He ended his Carfection run with a sublime Ferrari 550 Maranello video, highlighting just what a brilliant car that is. He also drove the McLaren Mercedes SLR HDK by MSO, which was a wonderful bit of rare groove automobilia!

For our picks, Chris went for Mercedes F1's Las Vegas demo run as a flex of 360 camera tech, while his channel was Donut Media (again), especially the High Car/Low Car challenges.

Marty excavated a wonderful documentary about Thrust SSC from Archive.org for his pick, while the channel could only be Hoonigan.

Automovie Podcast - The Last of the Furious Marathon
play

12/04/20 • 67 min

The Fast & Furious marathon concludes as Chris and Marty take on the biggest and silliest movies of the Fast franchise so far, Furious 7 and Fate of the Furious, where cars jump through buildings, baddies hack into nuclear submarines and none of this matters because Kurt Russell! In other news, Porsche's excellent Road to Le Mans series continues and we get excited by A Massive Hunt.

Michael Fassbender's Road to Le Mans continues, and we think it's one of the best documentary series we've seen this year. Also Pistonhead's Sam Sheehan has done a great video driving the 991 RSR GTE.

We already covered Bad Obsession Motorsport's series racing a C1, but the end of season review has a great ending, and is recommended.

We've had the first trailer for The Grand Tour's special A Massive Hunt, which looks ace. Also a new series called Sorted has started, which could be great but has a fairly major flaw.

Chris Harris has had a busy month for content. First doing a very revealing 2 part interview with Jonny Smith on The Late Brake Show. Then a good discussion with Remove Before Race talking about the influencer approach and where AMG is going wrong. He's also started doing longer form interviews on the Top Gear YouTube channel, the best of which so far is Chris Harris talks EVs with Graeme Cooper from the National Grid.

For the last part of the current Fast and Furious marathon, Chris talks Fast and Furious 7 while Marty rounds out the series with The Fate of the Furious. Thank God we're done, let's move on.

In this episode's 'What has Henry Catchpole been up to this week?', The gloriously bonkers Nomad R gets an outing in the hills and beautifully moody introduction.

Chris's YouTube pick this week is not Carfection's The Greatest F1 Cars Ever - All In One AMAZING Place: Williams Heritage (Yes, he's cheating again), but instead Chris Harris doing what he does so well on YouTube which is making content for us. Chris Harris Let Loose on Audience Cars. For his channel pick... He's also cheated. We've talked about Tavarish's channel before, but he did a project rebuilding one of the Fate of the Furious's hero cars. An orange Lamborghini Murcielago.

Martin picked up on Top Gear's new series call Stig Drifts, where gratuitous drifting shots meet a video game aesthetic. The channel pick is the brilliant land speed record channel Scarf & Goggles. Well worth a look!

Automovie Podcast - Helping YouTubers Grow Their Channels
play

02/13/23 • 59 min

In this episode, we don't review a move! Instead, Marty tries to watch the Lamborghini movie, Chris does some research on how to help YouTubers reach more viewers and we discuss why Ted Kravtiz is vital to Sky's F1 coverage.

But first, B is for Build has posted a carefully worded summary of the court cases surrounding licensing for Eleanor builds. Girardo and Co and Fiskens are selling cars in Paris connected to the movie Le Mans, and Johnny Herbert and Paul di Resta are no longer presenting on Sky F1.

Since the last episode Marty tried watching the Lamborghini movie and it didn't go well, Mat Armstrong is trying to rebuild a 992 GT3 and Mighty Car Mods are literally overnighting parts from Japan.

Chris enjoyed the behind the scenes look at broadcasting the 2021 British Grand Prix on F1 TV, but it was this video from JayEmmoncars that sparked the question of what viewers can do to help support YouTube creators they like. The big takeaways were:

  • The best thing you can do is personally share and recommend videos. This helps creators find like minded viewers and will help grow their audience.
  • Listen to creators. If they are pushing their merch, Patreon, brand sponsors or other sales, this is them telling you how their business is supported.
  • Liking, commenting and subscribing may be a cliche, but it does help. By subscribing to channels, it does help them find sponsors and set rates accordingly.

A huge thanks for James Martin and Misha Charoudin for their input, as well as Attache Travel, Super Rider and more for their honest insight.

In 'What Is Henry Catchpole Up To This Week?' news, he's squeezed his tall frame into a little Caterham and shown that less can still be engaging and exciting on video.

For his YouTube picks, Chris went with the Launch Control: Road to Gymkhana 2022 series, looking at what it takes to shoot a Gymkhana film and keep the car running. For his channel choices, a big thanks to James Martin and Misha Charoudin for this support.

Marty went with the Smoking Tire reviewing the 911 Dakar and his channel pick was the always great Doug Demuro but especially now he's bought and reviewed his all time dream car - Thiiiiis is the Carrera GT.

Automovie Podcast - Impossible Missions: Part 1
play

07/27/22 • 79 min

We choose to accept the mission to review Mission: Impossible 2 and Mission: Impossible 3, Chris talks us through the new US F1 TV rights and wonders exactly who is paying the bills at Drivetribe these days, while Marty reviews the latest series of Top Gear and learns about a very special Porsche 911 in Japan.

But first, Variety reports that Keanu Reeves is planning a documentary about the Brawn GP Formula 1 team. Whoa.

The Formula 1 TV rights have been sold to ESPN in the US, for many dollars.

There's a second series of Richard Hammond’s Workshop commissioned, and the Grand Tour have been filming a new special in Poland. We should see that in around 6 months, just in time for Christmas.

This episode's reviews are Mission: Impossible 2 (a bit cack but good car chases) and 3 (really good, but not enough orange Lamborghini). We'll be doing the later, crazier Mission films in the next couple of episodes.

In 'What has Henry Catchpole Been Up To This Week?', Henry has been arguing with himself about the Lamborghini Huracan STO and reviewing the Morgan Super 3.

Chris's YouTube pick is a mini-documentary about the 2022 Nürburgring 24H from Misha Charoudin who has been crushing it with excellent content of late, and highlights Brad Philpot's YouTube channel which is full of similarly excellent F1 stuff.

Marty chose a video about a rather special Porsche 911, which turns out to also be a fascinating look at late 80s and early 90s car culture in Japan, detailing the exploits of the infamous Mid Night Club, and highlights the channel the video came from too.

Automovie Podcast - The Greatest and the Greatest Underdog
play

05/13/20 • 63 min

In this episode, Chris and Marty talk about the movies featuring the Greatest and possibly the Greatest Underdog. Elsewhere, they discuss the a proper barn find and revisit one of the worst racing films ever.

In the last episode we discussed a movie list from Mark Kermode but we mixed up our 'Crash'es. As an act of penance, please go and check out the Secrets of Cinema series on iPlayer.

There is a great, if short, story of the 'Thorndyke Special' from The Love Bug as actually discovered in a barn!

Marshall Pruett has done a deep, deep dive into Driven. Stunningly, worrying detailed.

In this episode Marty has gone in depth with A Life of Speed: The Juan Manuel Fangio Story, while Chris watched Uppity: The Willy T. Ribbs Story

For our online picks, Chris got in first choosing Ratarossa's Abandoned Ferrari F40 Treasure Hunt, while also recommending Jonny Smith's CarPervert channel, congrats on 100k subscribers!

Marty chose Hard Cell episode 1 which is currently free to watch, though not on YouTube. What is on YouTube though is the VHS Rallies channel for some nostalgic fun.

play

04/27/20 • 69 min

In this episode, Chris and Marty talk about the movies they show their kids, including Pixar's Cars and Disney's The Love Bug. Elsewhere, they discuss the merits of online racing and get lost in a 911 tangent.

Mark Kermode has produced a great, interesting list of car films to watch.

New on Motortrend is Hard Cell with Tom Ford, looking at all things EV. A free trial of MotorTrend TV is available.

For this episode we're looking at kids movies, with Martin talking all things Cars, while Chris revisits his very early youth watching The Love Bug.

For our online picks, Martin went with WEC 6 Hours of Silverstone 2015 - the 40-minute battle for the lead between the evil diesel Audi R18 and the righteous Porsche 919. There's a slightly pirate-y link, and an official highlights package on YouTube.

Martin recommends the Hillclimb Monsters Youtube channel as one to watch.

Chris has gone for Mclaren Tooned series 2, 50th anniversary. If, however, you love the retro VW life and fancy following a story round the world then Kombi Life is the channel for you.

Automovie Podcast - Formula 1 And On and On...
play

04/22/21 • 90 min

In this episode, Chris and Marty get geeky about Formula 1 with a deep dive into the latest season of Netflix's Drive to Survive, plus reviews of both 1966's Grand Prix and 2013's F1: Life on the Limit.

But first, Fast 9 is gearing up for release with a rather silly trailer, Motortrend TV is closing outside the US and becoming part of Discovery+ (and you can get 12 months subscription to Discovery+ free in the UK with Sky VIP), and we give our thoughts on season 3 of the Netflix hit Drive to Survive!

In this episode Chris is finally watching John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix (1966) for the first time, and Marty revisits an old favourite documentary 1: Life on the Limit.

In 'What has Henry Catchpole been up to this week?' the answer is driving the rather pretty Peugeot 508.

For their YouTube picks, Chris went with a Behind the Scenes video on the Driftworks Lamborghini GT1 inspired Murcielago, and if you haven't watched the Driftworks channel it is well worth a look. Marty chose the excellent, though largely overlooked, Alex Brundle racing classics, and while his channel pick is the Tavarish sister channel Wrench Every Day.
