Today’s expression is “under the pump”.
Now, don’t get funny images in your mind because, like any figurative expression, this phrase totally means something else.
In today’s episode, I answer a question from IG user Sajad on how to say the words “bean”, “been”, and “bin”.
And because we’re talking about “bean”, you’re going to fall off your seat laughing at my new joke!
As always, we will break down the different words & phrases in the expression.
Also, note the example situations where I use the expression “under the pump”.
And finally, don’t forget to download this episode’s FREE worksheet and listen to a longer-than-usual clip from the Australian series “The Tourist”.
Sharpen those ears, you might have to play it several times!

In today's episode on the Goss, with my dad Ian Smissen, we dive into an extraordinary discovery that took place in the beautiful city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Picture this: a 135-year-old message in a bottle!
A curious woman stumbled upon this ancient message right in her own home. Can you imagine the excitement? The note was penned by two local workers way back in 1877. It's like stepping into a time machine!
So what did this remarkable message say, you ask? Well, it wasn't your ordinary shopping list or weather report. No, no. This message had a touch of existentialism to it. The writers simply contemplated the fleeting nature of time and the inevitable dust that would cover their once-bustling lives. But isn't it amazing how such deep thoughts can stand the test of time.
Inspired by this mysterious message, we start pondering. If we were to create our own time capsule for future generations, what would we write? What message would we leave behind? The possibilities are endless! We might share our hopes, dreams, or even a piece of advice to those yet to come. Or you can simply say, "I lived here."
What would you leave as a message for people in the future? Let us know in the comments!
Until then, keep learning, keep exploring, and keep spreading the joy of learning! See you in the next episode! 👋

Today’s expression is “the jig is up”.
If you get asked to take a guess on what it means, I’d totally understand if you come up with several ones - that 3-letter short word “jig” has many meanings!
No worries, today’s your day to learn all about it!
For this episode’s Q and A, I answer a question from IG user Hamed who asks “What are bell peppers called in Australia? When I go to Subway, no one knows what a bell pepper is!”
Apparently, some people find it weird that Australians call bell peppers “capsicum”. Yes, we use the scientific name. Weird, but it works!
There’s also a joke today about a definition of the word ‘jig’!
We will also break down the different words & phrases in the expression “the jig is up”.
There will be examples of how I would use the phrase in daily conversations.
Don’t miss out on listening to the Pronunciation Exercise to learn how to pronounce the expression.
And finally, be sure to download this episode’s FREE worksheet and listen to a longer-than-usual clip from the new Australian series “Troppo”.
👉 Don’t forget to download your PDF Worksheet for this lesson!

Merry Christmas, you mob!
How are you enjoying the holidays so far?
I finally got to sit down with my wife Kel and thought it's best we talk about how the year 2022 went by for us.
I admit I must have been sounding negative in some of the recent episodes but I believe we're ending the year as better individuals, and parents!
In particular, now that Kel's got work, the tables have turned and now I'm the one at home with the kids while still doing Aussie English with you guys. It's been truly brutal for me but there were certainly lovely developments like Noah who has toilet trained himself!
Kel's now working at a music school and listen how she has rediscovered things she loves doing for herself.
We also talk about the issues we ran into when getting the house -- I mean, real estate in Australia is pretty expensive and it's a lot of work getting into it!
Finally, there's some news about what's in store for Aussie English in the first quarter of 2023! Don't miss out on that!
See you in the next episode!
