Ask The Tech Coach - Creative Ways of using Google Slides with your Students

Keynote ... PowerPoint ... HaikuDeck ... SlideShare These are all wonderful presentation programs. I can honestly admit that I use them just about every time I put together a presentation or prepare for a keynote. With these programs, you can create any type of slide that your heart can imagine. They are simple, elegant, and come on both the desktop and mobile platforms for all to enjoy. However... whenever you are asked the question “What is Google Slides???” Please don't ever start the sentence by saying... “It's LIKE PowerPoint...” because you are SOOOO wrong. On this episode of Ask The Tech Coach, we examine how Google Slides can be used in ways other than your typical PowerPoint substitute. Join Jeff and Rob as we showcase how one school in New Jersey is turning Google Slides into Google Frames. What does that mean??? Hit the play button and check it out today!

Topics Discussed

  • What are Google Slides?
  • How Can You Be Creative With Slides?
  • App Smashing with other Google Apps
  • Practical Applications for Students of All Ages.

  • Have a great website that is teacher friendly
  • How to work with contrasting administrations who want different things from you?
  • How to put yourself in more than one place at a time and not feel like you are constantly “missing” in the other building. (Out of sight, out of mind)
  • Summer Edcamp Wrap up
  • How to assess your staff members Technology Skills ... quickly and effectively
  • What should your survey look like
  • When to survey your teachers
  • How to survey your teachers

Are you looking forward to a new school year but it is just too early to bring new teachers into the building for training? Learn how to make the best PD decisions today! In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan discuss a variety of ways that school districts can be successful onboarding new teachers before the school gets started! Whether it is physical or virtual, introduce yourself as the coach/trainer via video and send it out prior so they have a name, face, and voice to put together to make them feel more at ease. Physical Training
  • Acknowledge the various levels of background knowledge of the teachers coming in.
  • Think about a self-paced checklist for them to complete where you are not lecturing but having them complete a checklist for proof of knowledge and you are available to answer questions. We call ours “Getting to Know Tech at CASS” - SAMPLE
  • SAMPLE of a Technology Orientation Page

Virtual Training
  • The checklist idea from physical training can definitely be incorporated here.
  • Utilize video. Get yourself an online video presence. Training does not always have to be synchronous. All of those questions you get all of the time, make them into quick tutorial videos for your teachers to access anywhere/anytime.

Do You Have a Question For Us?

How To Gather Feedback From Your Professional Development Sessions

Why is it important to gather feedback?

  • Get a feel for where your attendees are either before or after a session
  • Figure out where to go next with a particular group or individual
  • For your own personal reflection as a coach to determine how the session went and if it was successful

How do you gather feedback?

  • Watching faces, body language, verbal comments from group/individuals during the sessions - This will tell you a lot about if they are “getting it”
  • Beginning of year Professional Learning Feedback form - Sample from Susan
  • Exit Slip - Paper or digital - Much like we do with students in the classroom at the end of a lesson, why not use exit slips with teachers in a PD session? - Sample from Susan
  • Parking Lot - Paper or digital - teachers have the ability to place questions, comments, concerns on a paper or digital area
  • End of Year/Term/Semester Feedback Form - Sample from Susan
  • Follow Up Discussions - Verbal and using a school/local hashtag on Social Media through a FB group or Twitter Chat, learning management system, etc.

What types of questions do you ask on feedback forms?

  • How has the session been beneficial?
  • Have they had ample opportunity through the year for the training they need?
  • From George Couros and included and referenced in my sample Exit Slip- “Two Questions to Ask At the End of a Professional Learning Day-
    • What did you learn today?
    • How Will your students know and benefit?

  • Other exit slip questions
    • Name 1 new skill or idea you learned today you will try in your classroom within the next month.
    • Name 1 thing you would like to learn more about from today’s topic.

  • What other training on tools or concepts would they like to have in future sessions?

Applications to help you gather feedback?
