Leigh Witherell on Instagram @leighsartfl

The Invisibility Project (theinvisibilityproject.org), now an official nonprofit organization in the United States, was born as an inevitable byproduct of Leigh Witherell's journey as an artist and a bereaved mother. After her daughter Amanda Jane tragically passed away in a car accident in 2021, Leigh turned to art as a companion and outlet to cope with her grief. Her art became a vehicle for expressing her inner self and sharing the depth of her heartache with openness and extreme vulnerability. Through her artistic journey, Leigh also rekindled her role as an educator, empathizing deeply with her audience, and realizing the need to bring visibility to the grief experienced by bereaved parents. She embarked on a mission to collect and share their stories, conducting interviews with grieving parents from around the world. These interviews inspired her to create powerful artworks, including "We Are the Story," during a month-long art residency in Portugal. Leigh's art serves as a testament to the pain and resilience of bereaved parents and will be showcased in the exhibition "Grief Flows," opening in Madrid on September 23, as a tribute to Amanda, the participating parents, and their children. The exhibition aims to shed light on the profound and often overlooked aspects of the human experience, demanding acknowledgment of the existence and importance of these children and the validity of their parents' pain.

Artinorbit podcast - Matte Black - Visionary Artist & Identity Explorer
play

08/11/23 • 57 min

In this episode of "Artinorbit" hosted by Sofi Ortegano, we delve into the extraordinary life and artistic journey of Matte S.S. Black (mattessblack.com), an artist with a remarkable story. Formerly known as Matt Jonas, Matte's journey has been shaped by his Disassociation Identity Disorder, a condition that remained undiagnosed for most of his life. As he regressed to his childhood and embraced different personalities to cope, Matte's brain structure occupies a unique intersection between autism, schizophrenia, indigenous shamanism, and mathematical genius. In the eyes of his psychiatrist, he's an artistic genius unlike any other, residing within the .01% of the population with access to an untapped part of the mind.

Matte's artistic talents are nothing short of incredible, allowing him to connect across dimensions, learn in alternate realms, and bring his creations to life in the third dimension. His psychiatrist hails this as a rare gift. Despite being labeled as talented, Matte is unequivocally gifted, and his artistry goes beyond conventional recognition. He navigates life through various personas, with 3-year-old Sarah Scarletton being the most prominent, often taking the lead. As Matte continues his journey, he documents his experiences in a journal, shedding light on his painful childhood memories and the intricacies of his uniquely wired brain.

Once voted as Australia's #1 sign writer and Airbrush artist, Matte delves into the paradox of such recognition and the ostracism he faces in the art world. His journey is a testament to the discrimination he's encountered from those who run the arts with left-brained analytical perspectives, and who often suffer from the Dunning Kruger effect. Matte's innovative approach extends beyond visual art, as he crafts instruments from his mind's eye, bypassing traditional schematics. Tune in to this episode to uncover the captivating narrative of an artist whose journey defies norms and reveals the power of art as a means of self-expression and healing.

Artinorbit podcast - Praveen Nadaraju - heuristic artist
play

04/06/23 • 83 min

This episode of Artinorbit features the artist Praveen Nadaraju interviewed by our host Sofi Ortegano (a young artist and musical theater student).

Praveen took his own unique artistic route, training for over 20 years in Life drawing, Industrial Design, Classical, and Computer Animation.

Praveen Moodley Nadaraju in his own words:

I would describe my style as heuristic (unknown), part of this art process uses a Cezanne like approach to layering multi angle images, ranging from, dolls to nature, nothing is out of bounds, I feel and let things flow, constantly challenging myself to go further and look deeper into myself and my work.

At the age of 17, I started practicing the Italian Classical way of life drawing.

I then pursued a career as an Industrial Designer, which led into Interior Design, lasting 6 years and spent another 20 years transitioning into Classical & Computer Animation.

The last three years has been a mash of various experiences, from starting a Wellness business (now defunct), then being offered a job as a hedge fund consultant, everything changed once I sought change, that change is still happening on a daily basis but art, art is the foundation of my being, it is what allows me to go beyond the animal state of human nature.

Praveen's new website (under construction at the time of recording this episode) is pnartgallery.com

Artinorbit podcast - Matthew Conway - portrait photographer
play

06/10/23 • 66 min

This episode of Artinorbit features photographer Matthew Conway in open conversation with our host Sofi Ortegano (a young artist and musical theater student). Matthew Conway is an emerging portrait photographer based in the DMV—D.C. metropolitan area—in the US. With a journey that commenced during the peak of the pandemic in March of 2020, his foray into photography unfolded as a long-standing hobby that he had contemplated for years but had postponed due to prior financial commitments. Taking the leap, he undertook numerous projects encompassing landscape photography, event coverage, and capturing portraits of individuals and local travel scenes. Initially a hobbyist for three years, he has since undergone a transformation, now recognizing himself as an artist and aspiring to reach the pinnacle of this art form.

Throughout his life, Matthew has sought to embody the spirit of a Renaissance man, excelling in various domains such as culinary arts, violin playing, history as a graduate student, and passionate cycling. By instigating incremental changes in his daily life, he not only honed his photography skills but also evolved into a better version of himself. Having been a former student athlete in high school as a wrestler and later channeling that same energy into cycling, he achieved a significant milestone by completing his first century ride—a 100-mile bike journey dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer research, in memory of his Aunt Kay who succumbed to breast cancer during his childhood.

Driven by a deep yearning to pursue work fueled by passion, Matthew endeavors to capture subjects at their finest through his photography. A recent visit to the African Art Museum in Washington, DC served as a catalyst for his inspiration. Witnessing awe-inspiring portraits of Nigerian actors and actresses, he felt compelled to give back to his community in a similar vein—by showcasing images that exude the rare essence of black men and women, celebrating the beauty of the African diaspora through his lens.
