More than half of mothers have experienced physical or psychological birth trauma leading them less likely to have more children because of their experience of maternity care. That's according to a study by Mumsnet instigated by Conservative MP Theo Clarke. She has founded an all-party parliamentary group on birth trauma to advocate for change following her own harrowing experience during childbirth, where she faced a third-degree tear and emergency surgery.
In this episode I sit down with a courageous couple, Angelisa and Veneline Nikolov, who openly share their emotional journey through birth trauma. We also engage in a compelling discussion with Kim Thomas from the Birth Trauma Association, and I share my own experiences of birth trauma including a complication called shoulder dystocia which left me and my newborn with serious injuries.
We delve into the profound impact of childbirth trauma on women's mental health, exploring the flashbacks, physical and mental injuries, guilt, and isolation that can follow. Angelisa and Veneline's candid stories emphasize the critical need for empathy and support for those who have experienced birth trauma.
We talk about the attitude of health care workers and our feeling of failure after our traumatic births -and what can be done to help people who suffer from birth trauma and how the system can be improved.
Tune in as we explore these crucial issues and call for a more compassionate approach to childbirth and improved maternity care for all women.

Every time untreated sewage is dumped in our rivers millions of microplastic particles also make their way into the water. When these discharges take place during low river flows, the microplastics settle on the riverbed, coated in a cocktail of chemicals and pathogens. These particles can be mistaken for food by hungry fish, thereby threatening fish populations and the wider river ecosystem.
Professor Jamie Woodward from The University of Manchester has been investigating just how deep this problem runs. It was his team's research that revealed the River Tame in Greater Manchester has the highest concentration of channel bed microscopic particles ever recorded.
Professor Woodward's research showed more than just the level of contamination. It revealed that the only way such high levels of microplastics could be found on the river bed was through the dumping of untreated wastewater outside of permitted conditions - that's because conventional sewage treatment is very effective at removing the microplastic particles from wastewater. Water companies dispute his findings, although he is world-renowned as a physical geographer with expertise in river catchment systems and his microplastic research has been published in Nature journals where peer review and editorial scrutiny are of the highest order. Two years after the publication of this work the water companies have not come up with a better explanation for these microplastic data.
DEFRA and United Utilities were invited to join us on this podcast to discuss the issue of microplastics, but both declined. You can hear their statements.
Professor Woodward asserts that untreated wastewater must be being discharged into rivers during low flows and dry weather. This is not permitted and should only happen in "exceptional circumstances". The implications of his work on microplastics are in good agreement with other independent studies of water company behaviour that have identified dry weather spilling of wastewater as widespread.
As we delve deeper into this pressing environmental crisis, we tackle the UK's consideration of a wet wipe ban and explore potential strategies to staunch the flow of microplastics at source. Professor Woodward's innovative sampling methods are put under the spotlight, and we grapple with the troubling role of microbeads from personal care products and industrial processes in contributing to microplastic pollution. We're not just here to expose the problem - join us as we champion the noble cause of cleaner rivers and consider practical solutions to this urgent issue. Tune in to this eye-opening discussion for an insight into the silent threat lurking in our waterways and how we can fight back.

Imagine what it's like not to be able to eat, not because of a lack of food, but because of a rare disorder that prevents your body from processing it. This is the reality for our guest, Celia Chartres-Aris, living with Loeys-Dietz Syndrome. Celia's condition requires her to be reliant on a feeding tube for nutrition. Her life is a testament to resilience and strength, and she joins us to shed light on her experience, from dealing with verbal abuse to answering inappropriate questions, all while living with a feeding tube.
Our conversation takes a critical turn as we scrutinize how legislation often fails to protect those with disabilities. With Celia's life as a backdrop, we examine poignant examples like the introduction of the Down Syndrome Bill, the care for children, and current access and architecture requirements for public buildings. We focus on the urgent need for inclusive policy making that involves the disabled in the process, underscoring the importance of designing everything right from the outset, with accessibility in mind.
The final part of our discussion turns to the crucial aspect of accessibility and inclusion. Listen as Celia recounts instances where she was denied access due to her disability, and how she uses these moments to educate others. We explore the Access Maturity Model, a tool organizations can use to assess their inclusion and accessibility policies. We conclude our conversation by emphasizing the importance of diversity inclusion, stressing the need for disabled people to be included in design and entrepreneurship roles, and a deep understanding of these critical issues.

Two million scientific experiments were carried out on animals in the UK in 2022.
More than four thousand Beagles were among them.
Home office figures published in April 2024 show that in 2022 there were 175 cases of non-compliance to government regulations regarding the welfare of animals used in testing. More than 16,000 animals were affected. The government is promising to investigate.
MBR Acres in Cambridgeshire is a puppy farm, where beagles are bred to be tested on with toxic chemicals.
Campaigners say the practice is cruel, outdated and unnecessary. Proponents argue animal tests are essential for the advancement of science.
Outside MBR Acres is an encampment of protesters who have lived at the site for almost three years. John Curtin is one of them. He explains how they obtained footage inside the top security site - and how he's been arrested for flying a small drone over the site.
John tells us how he has seen hundreds of vans carrying dogs from site, which they have followed across the UK to their final destinations - science laboratories. He shares stories of animal rights group Animal Rising who have broken into the site and freed a number of dogs.
I invited the following parties to participate in the podcast or provide a comment. They did not.

Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Andrew Griffith
Professor David Main, Chair of the Animals in Science Committee

Thousands of patients were lied to and given blood products that infected them with HIV and Hepatitis.
Doctors knowingly infected hundreds of children and then covered it up.
@AngelaWalkerReportsInterviews
Medical professionals and politicians put vulnerable patients at "unacceptable risk" the UK"s Infected Blood Inquiry report has found.
More than 30,000 people were infected with contaminated blood products administered by the NHS in the 1970s and 80s.
Join Angela Walker for a compelling, powerful and emotional discussion with Clive Smith, Chair of the Trustees of the Haemophilia Society, as we uncover the profound implications of the Infected Blood Inquiry's final report. Sir Brian Langstaff's findings reveal a scandalous decision in 1973 to license contaminated blood products, leading to preventable infections and a shocking cover-up by both medical professionals and government officials. Clive shares the deep personal and communal impact of this health crisis, emphasizing the conspiracy to conceal the truth and the failure to protect patients.
The episode delves into the government's controversial response to the reports from Sir Robert Francis and Sir Brian Langstaff concerning victim compensation. Listeners will hear about the skepticism surrounding the government's rapid overnight response, the unprecedented measures taken to ensure accountability, and the ongoing political complexities, including the calling of a general election. We also address the emotional toll on the affected community and the significance of an effective compensation scheme for the victims and their families.
Angela and Clive reflect on the historical context of the contaminated blood scandal, highlighting the political and administrative failures that perpetuated this tragedy. The conversation covers the harrowing experiences of those living with hemophilia, the tragic stories of co-infections with HIV and hepatitis C, and the broader systemic failures that allowed this disaster to occur. This episode is a testament to the resilience of the victims and their unwavering commitment to justice and patient safety.

Water companies in the UK have been dumping ever-increasing amounts of sewage into our rivers and waterways. Now, a law suit could hit them where it hurts and cost them hundreds of millions of pounds. Law firm Leigh Day is leading a collective action accusing them of abusing their dominant position by over-charging customers.
The action hinges on the allegation that water companies knowingly failed to report the number and extent of sewage discharges and were therefore allowed to charge customers more. The first claim has been issued against Severn Trent and further claims will be issued against Thames Water, United Utilities, Anglian Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water. Zöe Mernick-Levene , a partner at law firm Leigh Day explains the case against them which is being brought by Professor Carolyn Roberts an environmental and water consultant.
Ashley Smith from campaign group Windrush Against Sewage Pollution joins us to talk about his work and explain how mathematician Peter Hammond used AI to expose thousands of unnoticed spills.
We delve into how this data is captured, scrutinized and the fact that just 1% of it is reviewed by the environment agency. We'll probe into why water companies are being secretive about data and the crucial impact of citizen scientists in pushing the case forward. We'll also be discussing the reports from dozens of elite triathletes who say they fell ill after competing in the World Championships in Sunderland's water and the response from Northumbria Water. Listen in as we scrutinise the statement issued by the Environment Agency and DEFRA .
Brace yourself for a deep dive into the legal challenges faced by water companies for their pollution. Ashley unfolds the inception of Windrush Against Sewage Pollution and its efforts to expose the deteriorating condition of the River Windrush. Zöe uncovers their legal warfare using opt-out claims to make corporate giants rethink their actions.
We'll also compare the water systems globally to the UK's, exploring how privatisation led to profits at the expense of infrastructure. Ending on a note of damages, we decipher how a tribunal would decide the overpayment for each customer.
