TRINITY TEST with NATIONAL ATOMIC TESTING MUSEUM - DEAD HAND RADIO 10
Andrew Hall Podcast
07/16/20 • 114 min
DEAD HAND RADIO is a podcast about the Cold War. It’s history and the effects it had on our culture, technology and the future of our world.
My guest for this episode of Dead Hand Radio is Joe Kent. Director of Education for the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada.
RUN TIME 2:00:00
The National Atomic Testing Museum (NATM) is a national science, history and educational institution that tells the story of America’s nuclear weapons testing program at the Nevada Test Site.
The museum’s focus is to preserve, consolidate and make accessible to the public historical and archival records, films, photographs, testing and archeological artifacts associated with the Nevada Test Site.
The museum offers public tours, educational programs, guest lectures, and book signings for the purpose of raising awareness of the Nevada Test Site and the nation's nuclear weapons testing program.
Manhattan Project and the First Atomic Bombs
June 1942 marks the beginning of the Manhattan Project. But prior to that a very important correspondence took place that led to the development of the program.
July 16 1945 is a significant day in history. It was the day of the world’s first atomic explosion. And we’re coming up on the 75th anniversary of that date.
August 1945 two more bombs were detonated, this time on civilian populated areas, resulting in massive casualties, and the surrender of the Japanese army which effectively ended the war in the Pacific.
The Nevada Test Site
The Nevada Test Site was Established 1951 and was host to 100 above ground and 828 underground nuclear tests were conducted between 1951 and 1992.
I just found out that a distant relative of mine, Andrew Weiman worked for General Atomic at the test site and designed the high speed instrumentation necessary to measure the short-lived particles from underground nuclear tests. I was pretty excited to hear this and received a written account of some of his involvement with the test site. I haven’t read this yet, but I'm very much looking forward to it.
Leading to the end of the cold war a few significant dates should be mentioned.
- November 1989 Berlin Wall comes down
- December 1991 USSR Collapses
- October 2nd 1992 Moratorium on Nuclear Testing went into effect.
- What’s the current state of the Nevada Test Site?

UFO INVESTIGATOR SHANE HURD - UFO EDITION 02
Andrew Hall Podcast
07/10/20 • 130 min
Dead Hand Radio is a podcast about the Cold War. It’s history and the effects it had on our culture, technology and the future of our world.
Occasionally I go off-topic and explore other areas of interest like esoteric knowledge, secret societies, The paranormal and UFOs also known as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena or UAP.
My guest for this episode is UFO Investigator Shane Hurd
Runtime = 2:08
Shane is a veteran UFO investigator who serves as the Assistant State Director for Arizona’s chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). I first encountered Shane during a presentation he gave on YouTube, about investigating UFOs. His approach to the topic and his demeanor in general are serious and no-nonsense. He seems passionate about his role as an investigator and researcher of the UFO/UAP phenomena. And as a MUFON member, he seems sincerely concerned with helping witnesses discover the truth about what they’re seeing in the skies.
One of the areas Shane mentioned in his presentation, was a topic that has become quite fascinating to me in recent months and that’s why I invited him to join me for a discussion.
This episode of Dead Hand Radio will cover several areas of UFOlogy including “how to get started as a researcher and how to properly investigate these phenomena”, and then we get into some UFOs and Nuclear Weapons, and try to determine what connection they have.

HIROSHIMA & NAGASAKI with ATOMICARCHIVE.COM - DEAD HAND RADIO 11
Andrew Hall Podcast
08/04/20 • 78 min
Dead Hand Radio is a podcast about the Cold War. It’s history and the effects it had on our culture, technology and the future of our world.
WWII Ended 75 years ago after the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities Hiroshima on Aug 6 and Nagasaki on Aug 9 1945. These are the only two times in history that Atomic weapons were used against enemy targets. Though it brought the end of the most terrible military conflict ever experienced by humanity, the toll of these two attacks was tremendous.
Some would argue it should have never been done, others say there was little choice and it saved lives. One thing we can all agree on, is that it should never happen again.
This episode was recorded on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Trinity Test, the world's first atomic bomb. And is being released just prior to the 75th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.
By this time in 1945 War had already ended in Europe, and the leaders of the UK, US and USSR were dividing up the spoils and redrawing borders for the nations of Europe. There was an obvious distrust growing between the Soviet Union and their Western Counterparts and the use of Atomic Weapons by the US against Japan compounded that sentiment for Stalin.
At the same time, the western allies were frustrated by the Soviet Union's interference with so-called “democratic” elections in Eastern Europe, and military posturing by the Soviets in East Germany increased tensions even more. Only through a very creative diplomatic response by the US was war averted, but nevertheless tensions continued to escalate in the years to come.
There are conflicting arguments as to the beginning and ending of the cold war. Some argue that it started with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Others say it started when the Soviet Union tested their first nuke. What’s notable is that the Cold War was centered around the proliferation of nuclear weapons on a global scale and was a precarious time in the history of humanity.
As part of my journey with this podcast, I visit many online resources to increase my knowledge of the events that took place during the cold war.
One of those resources, AtomicArchive.com is a website dedicated to collecting and storing information, photos and videos related to the testing and development of nuclear weapons and the events of the cold war.
With an abundance of information, photographs, videos and links to additional resources Atomic Archive is an incredible resource for anyone interested in studying the history and science of the atomic bomb and the effects it has on our world.
My guest for this episode of Dead Hand Radio is curator and webmaster of Atomic Archive Chris Griffith

Dead Hand Radio is a podcast about the Cold War. It’s history and the effects it had on our culture, technology and the future of our world.
Runtime 48 minutes.
My guest on this episode is Artist / Author J Edward Neill
Also known as Jeremy he currently resides in Atlanta GA and spends his days painting, writing and enjoying time with his son. I later found out he is an author and his writing varies among several different genres including science fiction, horror and philosophy. I think he’s even written some high fantasy.
In this interview we discuss Jeremy’s influences, what inspires him and what are some of his aspirations for the future. He shares some stories about his childhood that lend insight into his creative outlet, and talks about the things that are truly important to him.
The one thing we didn’t discuss was the Cold War and for that I have to apologize. Nevertheless it’s a fascinating discussion with a very talented, highly imaginative and creative individual, and I hope you enjoy.

Photographer Cindy Vasko is my guest on This is episode of Dead Hand Radio.
Runtime = 1:25
Cindy’s photography is focused on abandoned buildings and urban exploration, but she also shoots a lot of nature and wildlife photography, specifically macro photography is fantastic.
I first became aware of Cindy’s work through Twitter, which she posts on quite often. She is one of a handful of other urbex photographers with whom I interact with on a regular basis and Cindy has authorized 9 books to date.
And for that reason, this episode will focus on urban exploration, photography and to a lesser degree publishing.

EPISODE 8 - UFO PODCASTER ANDY McGRILLEN
My guest today is Host of That UFO Podcast, Andy McGrillen
Andy is a podcaster, Scottish by birth and currently lives in the North East part of England with his wife and two children. Aside from being a podcaster, father and husband, Andy also has a lifelong interest in UFOs and he’s interviewed many well known members of the UFO community.
Andy and I met on Twitter, of course. Even though we live on different continents, the Internet being the most powerful communication medium ever, has made it possible to connect with people all around the world. When I discovered That UFO Podcast I reached out to him because of my own fascination with UFOs.
After several texts, I figured there’s certainly enough Cold War related UFO incidents worth diving into on this show, and I invited him on to discuss some of these events.
This episode will focus on UFOs and Aliens, and for listeners who tune in to hear about the cold war, don’t run away just yet. The cold war era had many UFO sightings and Alien encounters. In fact, the UFO phenomena actually became popular during the cold war.
To start, the Roswell Incident, which occurred in 1947, involved the crash landing of an unidentified craft, in the New Mexico desert near the town of Roswell. That incident was preceded by another very well known sighting just a few days earlier by pilot Kenneth Arnold who witnessed 9 saucer shaped craft flying at unimaginable speeds in the skies of southern Washington, between Mt Rainier and Mt Adams. It was this encounter that resulted in the term “flying saucers”.
These are only two of the UFO events recorded during the cold war era. And if you’re still not convinced this subject is interesting, stick around til the end for a bonus segment. And I’ll share a case that'll leave you wondering what these things are and why they’re here.
Finally, I’d like to mention that I really enjoy Andy’s podcast. He takes a very professional approach to his interviews, while at the same time maintains an easy and laid back atmosphere, but doesn’t shy away from getting into sensitive areas and asking hard questions that elicit interesting responses from his guests.
For these reasons I’ve invited Andy McGrillen to be my guest and discuss UFOs and the Military on this episode of Dead Hand Radio.
