Ambition Habits - 12 Tips You Can Learn From Ash Barty

For this episode I thought it would be good for you to listen to the words of a champion.

This champion is Ash Barty who recently won the Ladies French Open Title, the first Australian to win the title since 1973.

It is such an 'incredible win' as she puts it. And it was.

What we are going to listen to here are snippets I took from the Press Conference at Roland Garros immediately after her amazing win.

It doesn't matter what sport you play, tennis, soccer, hockey, golf and a swimmer or whatever sport you do play you can learn from her words of wisdom.

Ambition Habits - #24 Learning How To Visualize - Part 1

Learning how to visualize is a crucial part of you reaching your potential. Do not skip over this episode, this is an essential part of your mental skills inventory - you must have it!

Visualization will be a huge part of your performance. Even though this episode will apply to you as a sports person, it won't matter if you are a sports person or not, you must have visualization skills in place for you to reach the goals you want to accomplish. If you are not a sports person, still listen to this episode and see how you can apply this to you.

We will be doing a Self-Assessment exercise today to establish the level of your visualization skills.

There are no wrong answers- we just want to identify a starting point for you.

How you score yourself
This is a point system. When you answer each question I want you to rate yourself this way;
1 = Regularly
2 = Mostly
3 = Sometimes
4 = Rarely
5 = Never

Questions

  1. I visualize when I am on the field/court/course/practice area and whilst I am at home/school/work.
  2. I visualize my shots before and during my sport competition.
  3. I can see myself performing (as if I am watching from a video camera).
  4. I can see myself performing (as if I am doing the skill myself).
  5. I can see the colours and surroundings with clear detail.
  6. I can hear the sounds all around me when I visualize.
  7. I can change the images in my mind on demand for my desired performance.
  8. I always use a pre-shot routine.
  9. When I am playing my sport, I am positive and in control of my emotions.
  10. I am confident with each skill I perform.
  11. I can effectively shut out negative thoughts.
  12. I play well when I am under pressure.
  13. I am able to let go of bad shots and focus on the next.
  14. I can focus and concentrate during my sport performance.
  15. I use relaxation techniques to help me concentrate and focus.
  16. I have very specific goals for my sport and a detailed plan to achieve them.
  17. I choke at critical points.
  18. I can visualize anything from sport, to school, to business - anything that I want to achieve in my life.

Welcome to Ambition Habits previously known as Tiffany Mika Podcast. It was time to change this podcast show into something more beneficial for the sporting woman, no matter her age or her standard of play in sport.

Welcome to ambition habits. I am Tiffany Mika, the founder of Ambition Habits, and I'm so excited to see you here.

Why am I so excited? Well, the reason for that is is ambition habits has been something that I've wanted to develop for a very long time.

I've had my own experiences in in sport competing at a very high level.

And what I see, especially as a coach, is I see that a lot of women out there actually lack the confidence to participate in a sport that they really enjoy in the way that they want to in the sense of socially or if they're a beginner or they've been playing for a period of time.

But they actually lack the confidence to feel that they are good enough in their sport, or they're whether they're good enough to actually try a new sport. The thing is when you're lacking confidence, it can affect you and affect your decisions on what you're going to do moving forward. So what we want make sure at ambition habits is that you have the confidence within to pursue your sport. It doesn't matter how old you are.

So you could be 15, you could be twenty, you could be 30, 50, 70, 80, 90 it doesn't matter. It's all about helping you. So it's that person that is wanting to learn a sport. It's for that person that's, competing at a local level.

It's for that person that wants to advance. So from beginner to intermediate or from intermediate to advanced or, you know, go and play world championship events, whatever it is, whatever level that is for you. That's what Ambition Habits is there for you. So what we'll be working on are skills and strategies on how to build your confidence.

We'll be working on how to over overcome your nerves when you are participating in sports, starting a sport, going and competing in the sport, just showing up and playing socially, how to deal with those nerves, and everything else that's evolved around, building that confidence in you so that you can go and play the sport that you've chosen to play or that you wanna go and play. And you can step into that arena feeling confident within, feeling good within, feeling like you belong there, feeling, in control of the the skills that you've learned, feeling in control of the the mental stuff that goes on.

And, so that you're out there accomplishing your big dreams in whatever it is that you wanna accomplish in your sport. It won't only help you in your sport, it will help you in general life as well. But the focus is going to be on helping you accomplish whatever it is that you wanna accomplish in your sport. Doesn't matter what level you are.

Doesn't matter if you're just starting out. Doesn't matter if you're quite advanced. There's going to be some great, skills, some great strategies and techniques in how to help you develop those so that you're out there competing the way that you wanna compete, playing the way that you wanna play, getting a lot of enjoyment out of playing that sport, whatever that sport is.

And most importantly is just having fun and feeling good within. The biggest thing is is when we go out and play sport, we wanna make sure that we're feeling good within. We're there to enjoy it, and we're feeling like we're actually improving and accomplishing something, whatever that level may be. So remember, it doesn't matter how old you are. You can be twenty, you can be thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety. It doesn't matter.

Ambition habits is here for you. Doesn't matter on the level. Doesn't matter if you're just starting out and you're a beginner or you're, you know, a little bit more advanced into intermediate or advanced or, you know, you've got bigger dreams than that, we are here for you to help you. So I look forward to sharing all the skills and strategies on how to build confidence in in you so that you can accomplish your ambitions.

Ambition Habits - Gain The Mental Edge - Introduction

If you have signed up for the Successful Athletes Masterclass, which is free by the way, you will get a questionnaire from me asking you what your biggest frustrations are in your sport.

These are the common responses I get from athletes;

  • very self conscious
  • doubt
  • lack of self-belief
  • struggle with pressure
  • fear of making mistakes
  • fear of giving up
  • fear of not giving your all
  • fear of getting it wrong
  • looking bad when playing
  • fear of letting team down
  • not performing to best of ability
  • getting highly emotional when competing

All of these athletes play different sports, yet they experience the same thoughts, feelings and emotions towards their sport. What it shows us as athletes and as human beings is that we go through the same thoughts, feelings and emotions however, it is our own personal take or view point because of our past experiences in these sports that we have encountered.

For example; if you are in fear that you will make a mistake when you perform a skill, this situation where you have fear that you will make a mistake over and over will repeat over and over again. The reason for this is that you respond that same way over and over again. It's a pattern of behaviour.

Ambition Habits - Managing Your Mindset Through Lockdown

All around the world we are going through some form of lockdown.

There are restrictions placed on us;

  • social distancing
  • no parties
  • no hanging out with friends
  • no social gatherings
  • online school learning
  • people are losing their jobs
  • economies around the world are in shutdown or a coma

And then there is YOU!

YOU THE ATHLETE!

You have had your wings clipped. You can't compete in your sport and you can't train and practice the way you normally do.

So we are all going through this adjustment process. Many people don't like change.

However, that is not you. Because you are an athlete, you are accustomed to change and you can adapt. But that doesn't mean that we don't get affected. It is normal to be affected.

There is so much uncertainty;

  • we don't know when we will get back to normal
  • we don't know when we can compete again
  • will this happen again

The question then is asked, "Ok Tiff, how do I manage my mindset during lockdown?"

The answer - FOCUS ON YOUR VISION

Write out your goals/outcomes/results for what you want to accomplish by the end of the;

  • quarter
  • month
  • week
  • day

And keep focusing on the vision!

This is what you can control. This is how you manage your mindset during lockdown and at any time. This is a powerful skill to implement.
