WHY FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND?
- By June, summer is starting to crank into full swing.
- While we’re paying tribute to the things that make our nation great, our founding fathers also thought it a fine idea to tip their hats to all fathers. Because if there’s anyone who would appreciate a relaxing holiday weekend the Boulevardia way, it’s a dad.
WHY GRAND BOULEVARD?
- Boulevardia draws inspiration from the community in which we gather to celebrate. In 2014, we had our humble beginning in the West Bottoms in the shadow of the 12th Street Bridge, 2017 The stockyards...
- Starting in 2022, we're thrilled to call Grand Boulevard – one of the most iconic thoroughfares in Kansas City – our home.
WHY DO WE CHEERS TO ALL?
- There’s already too much trouble and disagreement throughout the rest of the world, so far be it from us to add to any unrest.
- What makes us happy and our nation function most effectively is seeing people from all walks of life and of all ages, races, styles and personalities come together with the same motivations.
ENDING: Festival-goers will enjoy craft beer and food samples. There is also live music from local, regional, and national bands. A full lineup is available online at boulevardia.com/lineup.
Boulevardia is scheduled for June 16-17, 2023. Tickets and ticket packages are on sale and start around $40 per person.

Always Be Cool (ABC) Podcast - Bobby Kerr & Darren Copeland of SummitLendingUSA.com
10/04/23 • 60 min
Kansas City Drummer & CEO of Steps of Faith, Billy Brimblecom
What we love about this show is bringing awareness to awesome organizations and people that our listeners may not otherwise know.
Story is incredible: Musician signed to major record label, former improv comedy actor, best buds with Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis, CEO of Steps of Faith which has raised over $3 million to pay for prosthetic limbs for uninsured amputees, organizer of one of Kansas City’s largest and sought-after events (Thundergong!), amputee yourself from cancer, appeared in Netflix’s series Girlboss, AND drummer for one of KC’s best tribute bands....Summer Breeze....WOW! We’re going to struggle to find things to talk about today.
- If you've been in Kansas City for a bit, you may have been hearing about this recent annual event called "Thundergong!" — involving Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen, Will Forte, and Wynonna Judd, alongside other celebrities and musicians.
- NAME - How did you guys come up with the name of the event?
- How did you and Jason come up with the idea of the event?
- Failings of the healthcare industry - I’ve read articles where you mention this multiple times so obviously this is at the heart of your WHY with Steps of Faith.
- Can you elaborate on what these failings are?
- Is there a solution besides putting on awesome nonprofit events to help people?
- Starting a nonprofit - Lots of listeners and business owners want to do this. What are some key steps you’d recommend for someone wanting to start a nonprofit? Warnings? Must-do’s, right away?
- Brendan Hunt - Was just in town a few days ago doing a meet n’ greet at Arthur Bryant’s BBQ for Children’s Mercy & Big Slick benefit
- Amputation & Cancer - You’ve obviously accepted this challenge life threw at you and made lemonade from lemons.
- I’ve heard you say that coping with the loss of your leg gave you a “whole new perspective on life.” - HOW and WHY?
- I’ve heard you talk about MISCONCEPTIONS about amputees - Can you explain?
- Comedy Sportz - Rivermarket area in the mid-90’s - Love that place!
- People often ask me: How did you become good or learn how to start and run businesses?
- I always reply: “Playing in a band was life’s university.”
- I learned about marketing, interpersonal communication, website design, the art of follow-up, rejection, travel, problem solving, routing tour dates, etc
- Drums - “Playing the drums rewired your brain as a 12 year old.” Same. How did this change the trajectory of your life?
- “Wipeout” inspired/intrigued you - SAME!

#150 Brien Darby | Executive Director for Cultivate KC, a locally-grown nonprofit working to grow food, farms, and community in support of an equitable, sustainable and healthy local food system for all.
Always Be Cool (ABC) Podcast - Bobby Kerr & Darren Copeland of SummitLendingUSA.com
07/05/23 • 8 min
Cultivate KC is proud to introduce Brien Darby as our new Executive Director! Relocating to Kansas City with her husband and young daughter, Brien came to us from the Denver Botanic Gardens. She was born in K.C. and still has family here. We are so pleased and excited for you to get to know her.
Brien’s food knowledge began in her childhood garden, where her father would set aside space for her brother and her to grow whatever they’d like. She helped with farms at her high school and college and appreciated the lessons farming gives to students as well as supplying food to the cafeterias.
Her first paid farming job was at a 3-acre restaurant farm in Boulder. She created a crop plan to suit the needs of the five-restaurant group associated with the farm. By then she knew that growing food was her passion! To cut down her commute, she found a benefited position with the Denver Botanic Gardens and soon built a successful suite of urban agriculture programs.
Brien learned of Cultivate KC in the summer of 2016 and thought it seemed like a one-stop shop for food access, urban agriculture training, support and advocacy. She’d been hoping for an opportunity to join the organization.
When asked what excites her about working with Cultivate, Brien replied, “Who wouldn’t be excited by the magic that is watching a tiny seed planted in the ground, grow into a plant, produce a bounty, and craft the very seeds that will start the cycle over again?” She enjoys living with the seasons and understands that each year from death springs a renewal of life. Along with the Cultivate team, she’s excited to share these seasonal rhythms and lessons and make farming and food accessible to more people.
She also recognizes that any job within the food system can be daunting, because we’re in some small part responsible for a supply chain that provides the most basic human need: food. She said, “if we approach our work with a level of respect and care deserving of our product and our customer, we should feel exalted and awed by what we can accomplish.”
Comparing KC’s urban farming scene to those in other cities, one unique aspect Brien observes here is visibility. It seems in some parts of town, you can’t go a few blocks without seeing a community garden, urban farm or community orchard project. Compared to many other comparably sized cities, she also sees more of an emphasis on farming as a profession in the urban space.
Some issues Brien sees that are not unique to K.C.’s urban farmers are the rising cost of land and competition from development as well as the myriad of challenges climate change brings. Higher overall temperatures (especially nighttime temperatures) and i
