Like a color by number picture, the more this beautiful October day in the 21st century in Spain was colored in by what it meant for Jesus to be by a cross in the Middle East 2 millenia ago.

All guide books have the location listed very clearly and therefore most pilgrims know exactly the day they will come to the foot of that cross. There is anticipation around this day because of the significant Camino tradition that when you come to the foot of the cross you are invited to leave your burdens behind."

"The shepherd kept trying to rub behind the lamb’s ears and the lamb kept trying to lick the man’s hands. We couldn’t seem to take our eyes off them. Time seemed to stand still. Finally, the shepherd stood, the lamb still in his arms and still trying to lick him. He turned to us, smiled, and thanked us for caring for his sheep. And just like that, he went whistling off into the night.”

“As we walked in sweet silence, maybe it was just me but the landscape seemed to become more vibrant when he walked by. The smells were more distinct, the colors clearer and stronger, even the animals seemed to be more animalish. The sheep were more sheepish. The birds flew a little more regally. The cows mooed with more meaning. Even me, creature that I am, felt more me-ish when I was near him. In fact, yes, it was like everything woke up a little more in his presence.”

“I found myself in a state of “standing on my tippy-toes”. You know that feeling when there’s something going on that you really really want to see and so without even realizing it, you’re standing on your tippy-toes to get the best view you can?.... This fierceness I had witnessed was different than any I had ever seen before. It wasn’t the intimidation or flexing of muscles like in the movies or in the boardrooms or on the streets. This was a fierceness rooted in the truth of things.”
