Maya Amoils had a very romantic mid-20's experience living and working abroad, running half-marathons and building the career of her dreams. That all changed after receiving a phone call that altered the course of her life. At 28, she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. The day before Maya came to do this interview, she completed her 15th round of chemo. She is fighting for her life and throughout her twisted and beautiful journey has discovered a lot about what matters most during our time here on earth. In this raw, vulnerable and beautiful conversation, Maya shares the ways we can show up for people when they need it the most, find compassion for ourselves during times of change, and create more moments of awe and wonder every chance we get.

It never occurred to Amanda Knox that she would be looked at as a suspect for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. The police told her she was their star witness. But once the story made international headlines, the investigation quickly turned into a calculated and violent interrogation that left Amanda without a voice and with a wrongful conviction that would change the course of her life forever. Who do our stories belong to? And how can we avoid objectifying the real people at the center of them?

In this episode:

  • How should we think about the stories we are told in the media?
  • Who is being helped and who is being harmed by the systems we rely upon for information, and what can we do about it?
  • Amanda’s experience when first moving to Italy.
  • The first week of November when Amanda’s life would change forever.
  • The news Amanda received that she was the key witness to this case.
  • Amanda and her boyfriend’s fight for freedom and justice.
  • Three core principles to live by when storytelling.

On July 4th, 1990, 18-year-old Stacey Lannert shot and killed her father, who had been sexually abusing her since she was eight. She was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentence to life without parole: Missouri state law, a disbelieving prosecutor and Stacey's own vulnerable state-of-mind all conspired against her. This harrowing real-life story of survival takes many twists and turns and is as dramatic as any movie. It is devastating, important subject matter and exquisitely told by a brave woman committed to justice for herself and all of man-kind.

All The Wiser - A Little Wiser: Wrongful Conviction
play

10/21/20 • 19 min

Various studies estimate that 5% of all prisoners are innocent. DNA evidence has exonerated several hundred people since it was introduced in 1989. These exonerations have helped identify disturbing trends and causes in wrongful conviction, the leading being the unreliability of eye-witness testimony. So why, despite all the news about misidentifications, do we continue to put such profound faith in the memory of eye-witnesses?

Rebecca Bender grew up as an all-American, small town kid skipping rocks on the river in Southern Oregon. At 18, her boyfriend convinced her to move with him to Las Vegas and the emotional abuse and physical violence began. For six years she was traded and sold between different traffickers, living in a constant state of fear for her life and the life of her young daughter. Her eventual escape and path to healing has brought her to start a non-profit to help victims of sex trafficking, train hundreds of thousands of law enforcement on tactics of traffickers, and help people everywhere see and idenitfy human trafficking occuring in their communities across the country.
