All The Way Alive - Susan Solo: The Parable of the Power Coat
play

02/22/24 • 14 min

In this short solo episode, Susan shares the Parable of the Power Coat. This parable is a very useful metaphor and construct for thinking about how we grow as humans and leaders. She also takes a moment to explore some people's discomfort with using the word "power," and she encourages people to get comfortable with the notion of their personal and professional power.

My guest this week is Sarae Pratt, a vibrant leadership coach for female-identified leaders. I met Sarae recently as a fellow participant in a coaching program, and I enjoyed a recent brainstorming session so much I wanted her to join me on the podcast.

Sarea’s background is fascinating to me: she trained as an aeronautical engineer at university with a side of German! Her experiences of being one of the few women in a room, as well as her experience with burnout (twice), led her to imagine a world where women leaders are confident, contributive, as well as joyful and burn-out free. She works in corporate bringing her SOAR leadership program to women in those organizations, and she also offers a “stand-alone” SOAR program for women either not affiliated with corporate or wanting to have their development experience outside of their corporate life.

I hope you enjoy our conversation around her journey, our experience with leadership in corporate, and get insight into the vision Sarae has for the future.

My guest this week is Nick Clayhton, someone I met in graduate school when we were both studying for our Masters in Organizational Development. He’s now a part of my monthly Coaches Cohort, where we connect, share our progress and challenges, and generally support one another. The best part about Nick is that he is all there: present when you speak with him, and full of heart when he’s at work or play.

All The Way Alive - Some Thoughts on Pervasive Overwhelm
play

05/23/24 • 12 min

In this short episode, I speak to the pervasive overwhelm I’m seeing in so many people these days. It seems all of us are at the edge of things, and feeling both not in control AND full of grief at the state of the world. Being all the way alive isn’t only about the good feelings; staying present with the hard stuff is also about being “all the way the alive.”

My goals with this episode are

1) to remind us all that what we are feeling - the overwhelm, the fear, the grief - is completely normal given what we see around us, both close in as well as across the globe. Also: none of is alone in these feelings.

And 2) that there are a few steps we can take as individuals to work with the overwhelm, to live with it rather than pretend or wish we weren’t feeling it. Like all difficult feelings, it can be hard; but staying present for the feelings will allow them - and you - to flow.

I’d love to know if this episode landed for you, and if the exercises were helpful. (I use them myself, and they work for me.)

All The Way Alive - Scott Robson Talks about Adaptotypes
play

08/01/24 • 41 min

My guest this week is Scott Robson, an experienced and compassionate coach who supports mindful, wholehearted entrepreneurs and small business owners on their journeys. He helps them develop aligned confidence, self-belief and sustainable momentum.
Scott and I both trained at the Self-Belief Coaching Academy, and we talk about the work Scott has done jumping off from themes of self-doubt into overwhelm. Scott has developed a model of how we respond to overwhelm, dubbing his six response types “adaptotypes” as key, useful responses to feelings of overwhelm. You can hear about them, and explore your own adaptotype at the quiz on his website! It’s a great way to learn more about yourself (and get support in deepening your understanding).
I hope you enjoy our conversation about navigating as an entrepreneur and following our curiosity, which for him, resulted in a model that helps all who take it gain insight into themselves.

My guest this week is Mags (Margaret) Scroope whose professional life has included being a teacher, corporate trainer, Aibnb host, and now entrepreneur! Mags is also a dear friend we met when we stayed in her Airbnb in Johannesburg, and she warmly invited us for a glass of wine to learn more about us, Americans who own a farm in the Free State!

Mags’ vibrancy and zest for life is the primary reason I wanted her to join me on the podcast. As she relays her professional and life experiences, and reflects on what she has learned, you’ll experience first hand how All the Way Alive she is! Mags is a great storyteller and she had me in stitches as she described resigning from a job. I encourage you to listen to the end for her reflections and appreciation for some of the challenges of living in South Africa!

I loved talking with Mags, and hope you enjoy our conversation.

You can reach Mags at [email protected]. Tree Top Retreat, one of her three Aribnb rentals in the Parkview neighborhood of Johannesburg can be found here.
