Dusty Rainbolt on WPET Talk Radio

Dusty Rainbolt on WPET Talk Radio

Dusty Rainbolt knew she wanted to write about The Fantastic since she was a nine-year-old geek sitting in Mrs. Fleir’s third grade class. In an assignment reminiscent of the “What I Want for Christmas” theme from the movie A Christmas Story, Mrs. Fleir instructed her class to write a short story.

When all the other kids were devising schemes to self-inflict hand injuries or attempt to launch their penny pencils as far north as Saskatchewan, Dusty took another approach. She set her imagination free and introduced her readers to two children who befriended an amiable alien. Sound familiar?

While Dusty has never received compensation from Steven Spielberg for stealing her idea, that short story unleashed her desire to take people to her own fictional worlds and provide them with a fright, or even a laugh or two.

Her latest novel, Death Under the Crescent Moon, was inspired by the numerous trips she and her husband took to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. While staying at the haunted Crescent Hotel, she learned about Norman Baker, an eccentric tycoon, who in 1936 transformed their favorite hotel into a cancer hospital. Legends about Baker and his alleged atrocities circulated and the investigative reporter in Dusty was determined to separate truth from myth. She spent years (and a boatload of money according to husband Weems) researching Baker, his cancer cure and his trial.

Ellie Laks founded The Gentle Barn in 1999; it was a dream of hers since she was seven years old. Animals were always very healing and nurturing to her as she faced the challenges of growing up, finding herself, fitting in, feeling understood, etc. She majored in special education and psychology, and with her special love of animals and children, The Gentle Barn was a perfect way of putting all her talents and passions into one. Jay Weiner joined The Gentle Barn in 2002 as a volunteer, but fell in love with the place and the two joined forces to heal even more children and animals together. Like Ellie, Jay also turned to animals for the support, love and nurturing he needed as a child. The Gentle Barn started on a half-acre property in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, CA. In 2003 Ellie and Jay moved The Gentle Barn to a six-acre paradise in Santa Clarita, CA. The property is complete with large horse and cow pastures, a red and white barnyard for the smaller animals, an organic vegetable garden, lots of shade trees, and a panoramic view of gorgeous mountains. There are nearly 200 animals that are safe and happy at The Gentle Barn, and there is plenty of room to welcome their visitors and the children they host. The Gentle Barn has a second location in Nashville, Tennessee, and a third in St Louis, Missouri. It is their goal to open Gentle Barns in every state so that everyone in America can hug cows, cuddle turkeys, give pigs tummy rubs, and look into the eyes of these animals and know for certain that we are all the same, and deserving of the same rights, respects, and freedoms. Since its inception, The Gentle Barn has saved thousands of animals and been host to over 500,000 people.

Houndstooth Non Anesthetic Pet Dental: How far have we come in 30+ Years Later? Dental hygiene is the science and practice of preventive oral disease, including the management of behaviors to prevent oral disease and to promote over all health. Houndstooth Pet Dental has been a pioneer in bringing to light the importance of providing a non- anesthetic protocol for non disease related dental care within veterinary clinics. We wanted veterinarians to be able to offer wellness care routinely rather than waiting until dental disease became the reason. Our clinics also wanted to have a follow up protocol after oral surgery had removed any existing dental disease . So, we put our heads together and came up with a team approach. Houndstooth Pet Dental developed proprietary gentle handling techniques that permits us to create a calm submissive state. We also specially crafted our instruments and redesigned existing dental instruments. With these updates our technicians are able to effectively clean both above & below the gum line while your pet remains comfortable.
