AAB 058: IPA Myths and Truths with Pete Brown
All About Beer
11/14/24 • 45 min
The most popular sub-style in beer at the moment, the India pale ale or IPA has had a very storied history, or has it? The most overwrought tale in beer is that the IPA was a new style loaded with hops to survive the long voyage to India and when it got there for all the colonists to drink, it was sparkling and delicious, unlike anything people had ever seen before. But is this merely a tall tale or does it hold some truth?
On this episode we talk with beer writer Pete Brown about IPA’s history, its myths and its creation into one of the most told origin stories in beer.

AAB 024: Spontaneous Fermentation in Beer
All About Beer
07/13/23 • 87 min
Spontaneous fermentation may be the most unique brewing technique in the world and the beers they produce are just as interesting, with many flavors not seen outside these styles. But “spontaneous” doesn't really tell you anything about what goes into making lambic, gueuze and American made versions from insane boiling hours to months and years waiting to see if the beer is actually any good to sell. Today we talk to two producers: one a classic lambic house from the Senne River Valley and the brewery that defined American sour brewing.
Werner Van Obberghen is one of the owners of Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen.
In 2013, Armand Debelder and Michaël Blancquaert called upon Werner to help shaping the future
of 3 Fonteinen. With his experience in strategy and with masters in finance and business economics,
he is now responsible with Michaël for managing 3 Fonteinen and its team of twenty. Michaël takes
care of the creative & operational side (brewing, blending, bottling, labelling) while Werner manages
the business side (administration, sales, marketing, tasting room).
Michaël and Werner continue the life-long craftmanship of Armand and – inspired by his values and
wishes – took 3 Fonteinen a step further. Longer barrel ageing, a local cereal and hop collective with
farmers, a network of families with Schaarbeekse sour cherries, a direct relation with some of the
most progressive biodynamic wine makers are just a few examples.
Jeffrey Stuffings grew up on the gulf coast of Florida. He studied government at Notre Dame and law at Boston College. While in law school, he discovered homebrewing and craft beer. He and his wife Amber moved to Texas 2007. Shortly thereafter, Jeff began working on starting Jester King with Amber (co-founder) and brother Michael Steffing (co-founder).
Today, Jeffrey focuses on beer making and Jester King’s operations. He and Amber live in the Dripping Springs, Texas area and have two children Laura and George.

AAB 044: The 2024 Dual Hemisphere Hop Report
All About Beer
04/18/24 • 50 min
Right now around the world, the hops industry is in two modes: In the Northern Hemisphere, the hop farmers are prepping the poles for twine, making sure the bines that start to grow are the perfect plant to make the arduous climb up, and are preparing the farm for the busy season ahead.
While in the Southern Hemisphere, harvest has been over for weeks, so the hop farmers are composting, cleaning the kilns, and are taking a well deserved break. On this episode we talk to two hop farmers, Eric Desmarais of CLS Farms in Yakima, Washington and Andrew Sutherland, hop farmer at Oast House Farms in Upper Moutere, New Zealand about what they are currently doing around their farms and the differences seasonality makes.

With nearly 10,000 breweries in the US, and countless thousands more around the world, it can feel next to impossible to figure out where to go. That’s where the Beer Travelers podcast comes in. Each episode we’ll take a deep dive into a local beer scene, highlighting its best breweries, taprooms, and local wonders. And I hope we’ll leave listeners feeling as if they’re locals equipped with a plan of where to have their next pint.
We’ve all spent enough time at home on our couches ticking off new beers; it’s time to get out and explore the greater world of beer.
On the first episode of the new Beer Travelers podcast from All About Beer, we start where it all began for our host Andy Crouch, his hometown of Chicago. And Andy has two of the best to help guide our exploration. Nik White and Chalonda White represent two of the freshest voices in craft beer. Chalonda, better known as Afro Beer Chick on social media, is a force of nature and her husband Nik is an old school Chicago beer guy who co-runs Chicago Beer Pass. Together, this dynamic husband and wife team are about as knowledgeable about their local scene as anyone we can think of.
We discuss all the great Chicago breweries, where to get the best lagers, IPAs, and sour beers.

AAB 043: Spouting Off About Czech Pouring
All About Beer
04/04/24 • 47 min
In recent years, you may have noticed a different type of tap in breweries and taprooms. They have a side pull and they can be used to control the amount of foam in a beer. Maybe you’ve even enjoyed a “milko” pour, a beer, usually a Czech-style lager, poured such that it is almost entirely foam. These pours come from the Czech Republic’s long beer history and are finally being appreciated outside their borders. Making good beer doesn’t end when the beer is packaged. Czech beer culture knows that the dispense of the beer enhances the beer, too.
