Did you know cold symptoms can be exacerbated or last longer during pregnancy? This is because your immune system is working at a slightly lower function and your changing body may not be able to deal with cold symptoms as effectively (like chest congestion). In this episode, Doula Rachael shares a regiment to boost immunity and reduce the length and severity of cold symptoms during pregnancy. What supplements are safe and what is safe to try at home. This episode covers it all!

Ep 47: Empowering Birth Stories with Jessica
Aligned Birth
04/20/22 • 72 min
In this episode, Jessica Brock, a patient of Dr. Shannon and one of Doula Rachel’s former client’s, shares her two birth stories. She shares how she prepared for her first birth with lots of research and advocacy and how this helped her navigate her long and exhausting (albeit beautiful and healthy) birth of her first son in 2018. She then shares how her first birth informed her 2nd birth and the things she chose to do differently for her 2nd birth to her daughter Nora in 2020 amidst a global pandemic.
Jessica shares about switching providers late in pregnancy, PROM (premature rupture of membranes), getting adjusted by Dr. Shannon in early labor, laboring at home until later in labor, and giving birth within 2 hours of arriving at the hospital. Jessica also talks about her experiences during postpartum with both of her kiddos.
Be sure to listen until the end because she offers some beautiful words of encouragement and advice for those expecting a baby soon.
There are so many nuggets of wisdom from Jessica as she shares her beautiful and empowering experiences of giving birth. She is inspiring, encouraging, honest, and vulnerable. You don’t want to miss this episode!

Dr. Ashley Harper joins us on the show to talk all about B!RTHF!T. We’ve mentioned this program on several episodes before, but today, we get to define what exactly BIRTHFIT is with leader/coach and prenatal chiropractor, Dr. Ashley. She has a wonderful exercise background and she uses that knowledge with her chiropractic training to help expectant parents keep their physical bodies prepared for upcoming birth as well as supporting people postpartum. Birthfit has an amazing foundation in movement, but how to live an overall wellness lifestyle is a big part of the classes too.
In this episode we talk about:
- What is BIRTHFIT and what are the foundations (the 9 core values)
- What does it offer prenatal and postpartum moms (or even non-pregnant people)
- How are the classes structured (online vs in-person and community)
- Why is breathwork important (breath is life - and it’s connected to the pelvic floor)
- How does it help with birth and postpartum
- How Dr. Ashley found BIRTHFIT during school and the impact it made during her postpartum (more on that in part 2!)
Resources mentioned in the episode:
This is a two part episode. In part 2, we dive into Dr. Ashley’s birth story and the impact BIRTHFIT made.

As a chiropractor and doula, we spend a lot of time with expecting and newly postpartum mothers. There is a ton of information you need and want to know about preparing for nursing. - The importance of posture while nursing
- Our personal experiences with posture issues after giving birth and in those first couple of years after giving birth.
- Helpful tips for feeding sessions (pumping or chest/breastfeeding)
- Nursing positions
- Nursing pillows
- Stretches to help relieve and reduce tension in the chest, neck, shoulders, and back.

Ep. 22 Prenatal Fitness - Running during Pregnancy
Aligned Birth
10/27/21 • 28 min
Just cause you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t run! I’ve been running for almost 33 years now, and I had a blast sitting down for a solo episode to talk all about my running journey and how I adapted to the changes throughout pregnancy. I love to run and exercise, and it was something I wanted to continue to do during my pregnancy. However, not only is your body changing during pregnancy which means your running will change, but there will be changes in your level of fitness from the 1st trimester vs. the 3rd trimester. I love sharing how I approached running during my pregnancy, some of the things I’ve seen with the moms I work with, products that can make a huge impact in your comfort level during exercise, other exercises to incorporate besides running, of course what chiropractic care can offer, and much more!
Please check in with your care provider before beginning any new exercises and to go over your fitness goals.

Ep. 13 Dr. Tijana's Birth Story Part 2/2
Aligned Birth
08/25/21 • 39 min
You don’t want to miss part 2 of Dr. Shannon’s interview with Dr. Tijana! They’ve already discussed her journey into chiropractic, as well as her adding “childless doula” to her resume, but now they talk about how Dr. Tijana’s birth story shaped not only her chiropractic office but also the lives of the families she works with.
Sometimes birth is unpredictable, and something that Dr. Tijana and Dr. Shanon share is the fact that both of their births did not go according to plan. Dr. Tijana has embraced her journey into motherhood with such grace, humility, and vulnerability, and we’re so honored that she shares some deep and raw parts of her birth story with us.
As Rachael and Dr. Shannon have talked about in earlier episodes, although birth might not go according to plan, it doesn’t mean we don’t create a birth plan. As Dr Tijana says, “mama, you don’t have to do it by yourself. Ask for help”.
Our hope and desire is that hearing her story helps you to create your birth support team and assemble your village.

Ep 99: Birth Terms to be Familiar with (Part 2/4)
Aligned Birth
04/19/23 • 78 min
In part 2 of our perinatal vocabulary series, we’re focusing on terms you might hear as you get closer to birth. And although these might be birth terms, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with them during your pregnancy as well. This just helps you be better prepared and to communicate effectively with your birth team. Definitely listen to part 1 which gives some great organ and organ system definitions, and we’ll build on those definitions as we discuss things like:
Rupture of membranes
Prodromal labor
Braxton-Hicks contractions
Episiotomy
Oxytocin
Failure to progress
And more!
