One of the demands Hamas made in the early days of the war was the release of Palestinians from Israeli jails as part of an exchange deal. About 100 Israelis taken captive on October the 7th are still believed to be held in Gaza. For hundreds of Palestinians serving life sentences, a swap deal is their only way out of prison.
