Ain't It Scary? with Sean & Carrie

In week 3 of our Manson saga we travel with the Family to the worn-down Western movie set of Spahn Ranch, where Charlie and co set up shop and begin their descent further into shared cult madness - separated from their loved ones, fully dependent on Charlie, hungry, overworked, and addled out of their minds on constant LSD consumption. It's a potent cocktail, ready to explode in the California heat...and boy, will it ever.

When The Beatles' White Album is released, the darkness at the Ranch coalesces into what Charlie preaches as his core teaching: white people will be overtaken by the Black people they've oppressed, and when that happens, only the Family will be able to survive by descending into a bottomless pit located in the Death Valley desert. This apocalyptic race war is dubbed "Helter Skelter" by Charlie, and once his very last shot at stardom ends in utter humiliation, he finally has nothing else to lose - and the victims soon to come will lose everything.

This week, we descend into the bottomless pit with the Manson Family. Next week, we begin the horror that is Helter Skelter.

This week, the horror of Helter Skelter begins on part 4 of our Manson Family deep-dive with the lesser-known murder of the Family's first official victim, former friend Gary Hinman.

We explore the circumstances leading to the powder keg-like situation the family was in, and how it all exploded into violence when Charlie decided that the money required to fund the Family's flight to Death Valley was basis enough for murder. Caught up in the Family's madness was innocent victim Gary Hinman, who was repaid for his former kindness to the cult with brutalization and murder. The killing of Gary Hinman directly led to what the Family decided to do next: continue onto a weekend-long killing spree that saw 7 more dead and their paranoia ratcheted up to 11.

Next week, for reals: the murders of August 8th and 9th, 1969, and how the Family was finally caught and charged for their crimes. But first, we'll meet the 7 victims that met their famous and untimely deaths at the hands of the drug-fueled apocalypse cult.

To mark the 150th episode of the podcast (OMG), we're going back to one of our earliest subjects! At the very start of the pod we investigated the Halloween urban legend of the stranger poisoning trick or treat candy, and how the tale actually originated in the true-life crime of Ronald Clark O'Bryan, the "Real Candy Man" who killed his son with a poisoned Pixy Stick for insurance money. This time around, we're looking into another Halloween-related urban legend: Bloody Mary.

The Bloody Mary urban legend is one of the most famous and persistent of any in American folklore. Especially if you grew up in the United States, you learned a version of the supposed ritual in your childhood: go into a darkened room, look into a mirror, say the name Bloody Mary a certain number of times, and in return you'll see the horrific visage of Bloody Mary in the reflection...or maybe the ghoulish specter will pop out of the mirror to take your soul to hell with her.

Of course, no one has ever been snatched up by a bloody ghost emerging from a bathroom mirror - but that hasn't stopped generations of kids, especially young girls, from taking part in the Bloody Mary ritual at slumber parties across the country and across the decades. But where did this urban legend come from? Is there a "real" Bloody Mary? Why do kids take part in a ritual designed to scare the pants off of them, and why are young girls by far the main participants in this strange and spooky tradition?

We dive deep into the psychology of folklore and our own pasts as legend-loving kids to try and determine where Bloody Mary came from, and why it's still such a major part of childhood mythologies. Happy Halloween!
