Aichaku | John Maeda – Design Co

John Maeda

Aichaku (ahy-chaw-koo) is the Japanese term for the sense of attachment one can feel for an artifact. When written by its two kanji characters, you can see that the first character means “love” and the second one means “fit.” “Love-fit” describes a deeper kind of emotional attachment that a person can feel for an object. It is a kind of symbiotic love for an object that deserves affection not for just what it does, but for what it is. And that is what Design is often mostly about.

Craig Kanarick on the Origins of Razorfish

Me and Craig Kanarick — CEO of New York Cruise Lines, Inc. and co-founder of Razorfish.

Co-founder of Razorfish, Craig Kanarick, shares his thoughts about how the Web was and how it became. He also introduces us to his philosophy on hybrid designer/developers, his love for creativity as being more than defined in just one way, and he tells us how he started out with his first job out of college as a consultant to Tangent in the construction of the first clickable banner ad on the Internet.

Key related links to visit are the firstbannerad.com to view how the Tangent made clickable advertising cool, Razorfish’s first 20 clients, Razorfish’s main page, and the NY Botanical Garden piece.

S1 E3 of Aichaku Podcast / Design in Tech Report 2019 at SXSW

In March 2019 I presented the Design in Tech Report to a spirited group of folks assembled at SXSW. The report put a spotlight on computational design’s need for inclusive design, and it closed on the topic of addressing imbalance. It’s a largely visual report so it’s best experienced in video form. But I recognize that’s not an inclusive approach at all, so in 2020 I plan to do the report a little differently than I’ve done in the past.

Note that there were audio problems in the beginning (not things that I could control) and the WiFi cutout in the middle, but it all worked out and I was extra thankful that mobile phones can create instantaneous hotspots!

S1 E0 / Design in the Technology Industry: Diego Rodriguez × John Maeda

In September 2018 I had a convo with my friend Diego Rodriguez about design in the technology industry. These days I bring my own lavalier microphone to be able to record what I say so I can share it easily on YT over here but I moved this to podcast format in January 2019 to learn how to do that. I
