Wild Oats, while not as much of an issue as Ryegrass, are becoming an increasing problem weed for Australian croppers. In this podcast, AHRI Director Steve Powles and AHRI Extention Officer Greg Condon discuss how herbicide resistance came about in this weed and how to manage it. This month on the podcast, we’re going to be finding out about the upcoming Herbicide Discovery and Development Conference, which is happening from January 18 to 20, 2023 at Curtin University.
Due to genetic resistance to many of the most used herbicides, the need for new ones is greater than ever.
This conference invites you to be part of the solution!
University of Mississippi Adjunct Research Professor, Steve Duke, will be the keynote speaker on Thursday January 19. He’ll be talking on “Molecular targets of herbicides and insecticides – are there overlaps that can be useful?” He joins us on this podcast to discuss what he'll be presenting on and gives an overview on what to expect from the conference.
You can get your tickets for the conference here.

AHRI Snapshots - Spraying stressed weeds in dry conditions
play

06/28/17 • 5 min

Unfortunately, large parts of Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland are as dry as a London newspaper! In this podcast, Jessica Strauss chats to Dr David Minkey about spraying stressed weeds in dry conditions. The info comes from GRDC funded research conducted by Dave Minkey and John Moore at DAFWA in the 90s. They set out to determine what factors influence herbicide rate. They looked at moisture stress, relative humidity, temperature, and days since 5mm of rainfall. As you would guess all of these factors had an effect, but it appears that moisture stress had the biggest impact. The rate of glyphosate to kill moisture-stressed wheat was more than 10 times that of wheat growing with adequate moisture. In a dry year, we’re often faced with the whole kit and caboodle – moisture stressed weeds, high temperatures, low relative humidity and long durations between rainfall events. There’s no quick fix, but by understanding the driving factors, it can help us to pick the best time to spray weeds. This research also reminds us that we’re likely to see surviving weeds at harvest, which is why we believe that perhaps this year is the year to adopt chaff lining at harvest.Take a listen to the podcast for a more detailed overview!Music: bensound.com

AHRI Snapshots - Harvest Weed Seed Control model explained
play

10/02/19 • 9 min

For this AHRI Snapshots podcast, we catch up with AHRI and WeedSmart Western Extensions Agronomist, Peter Newman, who wrote one of our latest AHRI insights on the best harvest weed seed control tool for you. He also developed a model which allows you to input your own data to figure out what options you might consider. You can read the insight here: https://ahri.uwa.edu.au/whats-the-cost-of-hwsc-for-you/And you can download the model here: https://ahri.uwa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Estimated-Cost-of-HWSC-calculator-Sept19-1.xlsx

AHRI Snapshots - Hybrid versus open-pollinated canola
play

08/29/23 • 9 min

Over the last few years, the AHRI agronomy team has done extensive work looking at crop competition in hybrid and open-pollinated canola.
Project lead, Dr Mike Ashworth, joins us on this podcast to discuss the findings on ideal seeding rate, variety, row spacing and seed size.
Herbicides are currently working quite well in canola. We know that herbicide resistance is a real threat though, so we discuss what the current trends are in herbicide use in canola crops and what growers need to do to mitigate herbicide resistance.

On this week's podcast, we’re chatting with Darling Downs-based consultant from PulseAg Consulting, Kerry McKenzie. He has done work on pulse crop agronomy and the implications for weed competition and he’s going to give us an overview of the results out of the Darling Downs and Emerald trials. Kerry's previous agronomy work has helped inform researchers from the University of Queensland Gulshan Mahajan and ‘Sunny’ Chauhan with ways to give chickpea crops a competitive advantage against annual ryegrass. *NB The audio of some of Kerry's interview is a little bit hard to hear in a few sections as he didn't have access to a landline phone.

AHRI's Dr Danica Goggin has found in her recent research that resistance in wild radish to 2,4-D is in fact not metabolic resistance. Take a listen to this podcast to learn more about how she figured this out and what it means. You can then head on over and read AHRI insight on this research, which hopefully will make much more sense after Danica's explanation! AHRI was a GRDC initiative which started back in 1998 under the guidance and direction of Professor Stephen Powles. This coming Sunday the AHRI Team will be hosting a dinner with AHRI stakeholders to celebrate AHRI's 20 year milestone. Many significant discoveries and practice changes have come about through AHRI being in existence. AHRI Centre Manager Lisa Mayer provides an overview of some of the significant achievements AHRI has had over the last 20 years and also delves into the future direction the research group is heading in.

AHRI Snapshots - Research highlights in weed science for 2018
play

12/05/18 • 11 min

It’s been a big year for AHRI. Former AHRI Director, Stephen Powles retired from the position earlier in the year, with Professor Hugh Beckie from Canada taking on the role. We also saw the opening of the GRDC-funded Agronomy Laboratory at the University of Western Australia. Research is at the core of what we do though and we didn’t do that in halves this year either! Not only did AHRI produce significant papers, but other weed science groups nationally also made important discoveries. In this podcast, AHRI Director Hugh Beckie gives an overview of the year that was and provides some insights into what's to come for AHRI in 2019.

Chaff lining has been increasing in popularity in the Harvest Weed Seed Control (HWSC) scene over the past two seasons. A survey of WeedSmart subscribers showed the percentage of growers using chaff lining increased from 6% in 2016 to 26% in 2017.Despite this rapid uptake of chaff lining, there really was no data available specific to its efficacy! However, there's now compelling research data coming through for chaff lining and it seems you get really good value for money and it does suppress weed emergence. In brief, this GRDC funded (US00084) research by members of the northern region weeds team, John Broster (Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga), Michael Walsh and Annie Rayner (University of Sydney, Narrabri) and Annie Ruttledge (Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Toowoomba, Queensland) showed that:- As chaff levels increase, the emergence of weeds from under the chaff decreases;- Small-seeded broadleaf weeds (eg. sowthistle) are more easily suppressed than annual ryegrass; and- Chaff type can influence weed emergence, depending on the chaff proportion of the crop. You can read the AHRI insight in full on this research here (https://ahri.uwa.edu.au/chaff-liningtoo-good-to-be-true/), but first, take a listen to the podcast!
