Ep. 811: Canoeing 1,000 Miles Through the Canadian Tundra - Part 1 - Revisited - Stephan Kesting
Adventure Sports Podcast
03/03/22 • 40 min
Originally aired September 09, 2019
Stephan Kesting is probably best known for the huge number of Brazilian jiu-jitsu videos he has on Youtube, the martial arts training articles he’s written for Grapplearts.com, and his instructional videos which people consume in app form, online streaming form, and DVD form.
What’s not as well known is that he’s also a full-time firefighter who received the national medal of bravery for helping save two trapped firefighters from a collapse in a burning warehouse.
He’s also been an avid outdoorsman for decades. For example, in 2015 he was dying of kidney failure due to a genetic condition. A kidney transplant saved his life and 6 months later he completed a 50 km mountain endurance hike with 2,600 meters of vertical climb and descent in the snow in a single day.
He recently completed a 42-day, 1000-mile canoe trip that took him from the boreal forest of northern Canada to the open barren land tundra, and then down to Hudson bay. He was by himself and carried all his food and supplies with him. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime.
Tune in next Thursday for Part 2!

Ep. 599: Dealing with Post-Adventure Depression - Joe Jimenez
Adventure Sports Podcast
12/23/19 • 77 min
After any great adventure, there's a very good chance the life you come back to is not nearly as exciting or engaging as the adventure you recently finished. For many adventurers, this can lead to a pretty dark time in their life known as post-adventure depression.
Today we're chatting again with Joe Jiminez (from episode 443) who recently finished the Pacific Crest Trail. He's currently dealing with post-adventure life and was kind enough to share his feelings and experience from what he calls an epic adventure and transitioning back to normal life.

Ep. 589: Life Lessons from an Outward Bound Instructor - Mark Michaux Brown
Adventure Sports Podcast
11/18/19 • 49 min
Every lesson that needs to be learned in life can be taught by nature. When we get out there we have time to breathe, to think, and to reflect on the beauty before us. It teaches us so much. No one knows that better than life-long Outward Bound promotor, Mark Brown. His life journey has taken many turns and his connection with the outdoors has fueled that life of adventure.
After spending his entire career in Outward Bound, he recently published a book titled Outward Bound Lessons to Live a Life of Leadership that interviews some of Outward Bound’s most prominent alumni. They include Luis Benitez, one of the foremost mountaineers in the world, former US Senator Mark Udall, The Home Depot co-founder and current Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Kohler Co. VP Laura Kohler. The book identifies the impact of Outward Bound in the world as told through the stories of former instructors and participants who have gone on to make a difference in the world. The lessons focus on what was learned in the wilderness and how it applies to being a powerful, positive leader in any setting.

Ep. 497: Rowing Across the Atlantic in 43 Days - Laura Try
Adventure Sports Podcast
03/25/19 • 60 min
Laura doesn’t particularly like rowing, which sounds crazy after you realize she rowed a boat 3,000 miles across the Atlantic with a team of three other women in just 43 days 2 hours and 20 minutes. On top of that, they managed to do this by rowing in 2-hour shifts, 24-hours a day, every single day. It’s not rowing that Luara loves, but a pure and unfiltered adventure and the push of the human spirit to experience it.
We hope you enjoy this wonderful conversation around adventure and the unexpected joys and struggles when you put yourself out there.

Ep. 609: Running & Blindness - Kyle Robidoux
Adventure Sports Podcast
02/06/20 • 35 min
If you’ve ever felt limited by your circumstances or physical limitations, today’s episode is a must-listen. Back in 2010, Kyle was sick and tired of feeling terrible about himself and having a hard time playing with his daughter, so he decided to do something about it. Losing a large amount of weight by walking, and eventually running, is no easy task. After taking into account that Kyle is legally blind, the challenge is exponentially greater.
However, that didn’t stop him from pushing forward, crushing limitations, and finding creative ways to exercise and run, without a full view of what was around him. 10 years later Kyle is running ultras on and off-trail, running between 20-25 hours per week, and advocating for folks in his situation through his career.
Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours. - Richard Bach
