When she arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina she bought her first bike and spent eight months working in a motorcycle workshop. She then headed out on a solo year-long journey across the Americas and while on her trip she realized that even though she was in different surroundings, her problems had come along with her. On a quest for change, Annette found what she was looking for on the road, and more importantly, she discovered how to hold on to it all after she returned home.

Hidden Roads of the Coast - Suzanne Jolly
Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast
11/15/24 • 75 min
For more than a decade, Suzanne Jolly had dreamed of her ultimate motorcycle adventure. Her idea was to load her motorcycle onto a boat that would drop her in a remote, boat-access-only area on the British Columbia coast. Once there, she could explore the vast network of logging roads that crisscross the Coast Mountains and ride in an area that few have ever seen. Because the area is so remote, she would need to take everything she required — bike, camping gear, and fuel — into the wilderness.
However, her dream was put on the back burner when a brain injury turned her life upside down. After a long struggle with recovery, which included re-learning to ride a motorcycle, she decided to make her dream a reality by inviting a few other riders to join her in riding the hidden roads of the coast.

Dimitrios Tournas was born in Greece, moved to the Netherlands when he was 29 and now lives in the United States. If you’ve seen the movie Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey, then you’ve already got a pretty good insight in to Dimitri. Although he is more sensible about the lengths he will go to, he does like to seize opportunities to complete tasks that are achievable.
In 2004, when visiting Greece he had a motorcycle accident that left him with the realization that life was not infinite, and that even if you don’t take risks, and live your life cautiously, the day will come when you may be at the end of your life looking back.
Although the accident deterred him from riding for many years, his interest in it didn’t evaporate. When he moved to the United States his passion was reignited and it set him on the path to expanding his comfort zone. He once again took up riding, and he purchased a dual sport motorcycle. When he saw a GS Trophy poster at the BMW dealership, even with no off-road riding experience, he decided to sign up for a riding school course with his sights set on competing in the challenging adventure.
With an impressive bucket list and the willingness to put himself out there and try just about anything, you won't hear Dimitri say the words “no” or “can’t do”, without due consideration. Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/c/DimitriosTournas Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dimitrios.tournas

Rider Skills with Bret TkacsSkills Development Activity: Threshold braking
The average experienced rider with or without training stops around at about 70% of the capability of his/her motorcycle and roughly 30% further than the average car. Since most training standards are nearly 40% below the motorcycles capability attending traditional rider training does not help you reach the maximum braking capability your motorcycle offers. The numbers I have put on the chart below are rounded off to make things simple and are not exact. During guided training your speed should be measured with radar and then adjustments made for brake application. However in the absence of a school like this in your area this will give you a much better estimate of your ability than the scoring you may have received during any conventional motorcycle training using stopwatch/distance standards.
Bret Tkacs~ Motorcycle Skills Expert
Setup:
1. Mark off a braking area up to 50’ (15 meters) with chalk on good asphalt or pavement. 2. Make your “begin braking here” point with an easy to see marker such as a bottle or large cone. 3. Check your speedometer accuracy against a GPS or phone app (speedometers or commonly 10% optimistic on speed giving you the impression you stop better than you do) 4. Practice steady approach speeds (each speed on the chart. 5. Have a fellow rider observe you as you practice braking at your “begin braking here” point to ensure you do not begin slowing or braking early.
The Drill:
1. Approach the “begin braking here” point at the speed on the chart, do not slow or brake before the point. 2. When the markers disappear from your peripheral view then begin braking stopping in the shortest distance you safety can. 3. Put down your side stand and take the distance to the leading edge of your tire and compare it against the chart. 4. Do not move up to the next speed until you are relaxed and consistent at the lower speeds. 5. To get a truly accurate measure or to safely learn to brake from speeds higher the listed below it is recommended to work with professional instructors training in this type of skill development such as Puget Sound Safety’s; Advanced Street Skills program (pssnw.com)

Water Bars, Broken Bones & Rescue | Spencer James Conway in South America
Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast
11/18/16 • 69 min
This is the story of a rescue made possible by a satellite communicator, an inReach device. We've used the inReach for some time now, but only have experience with it as a convenient method of staying in contact with family and for checking weather in remote locations. When we were putting together this episode, part of the plan was to talk to someone who had to use their inReach for the purpose of rescue. And while searching for someone with a story, we experienced a rescue mission of our own.
Jim Martin, show host, and his friend Brent Henry, went for an afternoon adventure ride, on the logging roads and trails on our island. That ride turned out to involve a serious injury and the subsequent rescue mission.
About inReach: We talked at length about both the inReach and Spot on a previous episode, Calling From Help from Above.

Spencer James Conway - Circumnavigating South AmericaSpencer was the first solo rider to circumnavigate Africa, totally unsupported. He documented his trip using a video camera and at the time had no idea that it would be made in to a six part series called African Motorcycle Diaries where it first aired on the UK Travel Channel.
And now, Spencer is riding around South America, documenting his trip on video, which will once again be made in to a series on the Travel Channel. Jim caught up with him on his trip to see how things were playing out.

Two Wheeled Nomad / Royal Enfield
Two years ago we had Lisa Morris and Jason Spafford, Two Wheeled Nomad, on ARR. At the time Lisa was a newbie to riding, and the trip was just in the beginning stages. Recently, Jim talked with Lisa and Jason about what they've been up to as they plan the next leg of their adventure. Where are they headed to and is there any end in sight to their moto adventure?
And on the heels of the grand opening of the Royal Enfield North America headquarters and first flagship showroom opening, Jim had the opportunity to discuss the future of the Royal Enfield motorcycle with Siddartha Lal, CEO of Royal Enfield and Rod Copes, President of Royal Enfield North America. Will an adventure bike be coming to North America?
Two Wheeled Nomad - Lisa Morris & Jason Spafford
Two years on the road, and still going strong, Lisa and Jason talk about their adventures and future plans. Lisa is a travel writer and Jason is an adventure photographer, both freelancing on the road to help keep up their nomadic lifestyle. Royal Enfield - Siddartha Lal & Rod Copes* From Royal Enfield News Release: Milwaukee, Wis. (Sept. 12, 2016) Royal Enfield North America Cruises Into Milwaukee With the Opening of North American Headquarters and First Flagship Showroom
Oldest Motorcycle Brand in Continuous Production Focuses Efforts in North America
It was a historic day for Royal Enfield, the fastest-growing motorcycle brand in the world, as it marked the opening of its first flagship dealer experience in Milwaukee, the heart of the North American motorcycle community. Royal Enfield CEO Siddhartha Lal and Rod Copes, president of Royal Enfield North America, addressed the crowd, including VIPs and dignitaries, at the grand opening event this past weekend.
“Royal Enfield is focused on delivering a ‘Pure Motorcycling’ experience to consumers. Our motorcycles are classically styled, simple, evocative and fun to ride. Royal Enfield creates a unique experience for riders that is approachable and unintimidating,” Copes said at the press conference. “This is the brand’s first stand-alone showroom location in the U.S., which brings to life the 115-year heritage of Royal Enfield – a history we’re very proud of.”
The company has also selected Milwaukee as the location of its headquarters and currently employs a staff of 20.
“Myself and the rest of the Royal Enfield global leadership are committed to the North American region,” Lal said. “Since 2010, we have increased production from 50,000 units to 500,000 units globally, and we are expected to produce 675,000 by the end of this fiscal year. North America is key to the contribution of that global growth.”
Royal Enfield North America will be continuing the brand’s storied history with the unveiling of its North American model lineup, featuring single-cylinder engines currently up to 535 cc. Available models at the 226 N. Water St. showroom include:
•The Classic 500 – timeless colors and classic styling ideal for exploring a city or cruising a country road.
•The Continental GT – a light and nimble motorcycle that boasts an aggressive riding position for an exhilarating ride.
•The Bullet 500 – in production for seven decades with its unmistakable appearance and distinctive exhaust note, this model delivers a classic, vivid sensory experience on every ride. About Royal Enfield: The oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production, Royal Enfield made its first motorcycle in 1901. A division of Eicher Motors Limited, Royal Enfield has created the mid-size motorcycle segment in India with its unique and distinctive modern classic motorcycles. With its new manufacturing base in Chennai, India, Royal Enfield has been able to grow its production rapidly against a surge in demand for its motorcycles. With more than 50 percent growth every year for the last five years, Royal Enfield is fast becoming a very important player in the global mid-size motorcycle market and is working toward reinventing this space with motorcycles that are evocative and engaging and great fun to ride. Royal Enfield exports to over 50 countries across the world including the USA, UK, several European and Latin American countries, as well as the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Royal Enfield also organizes and supports many motorcycling events and rides globally, more prominently the Rider Mania – an annual gathering of Royal Enfield riders from all over the world at the lovely beaches of Goa – and the Himalayan Odyssey, the most arduous motorcycle ride over some of the toughest roads and highest mountain passes in the Himalayas. Royal Enfield also conducts the popular “One Ride,” where people around the world ride out on their motorcycles on the first Sunday of April.
Stuck Motorcycle | Best Recovery Systems
Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast
04/07/17 • 81 min
If you venture off the pavement, there’s always the possibility that one wrong move and your bike is off the side of a trail or stuck in a mudhole. The question is, do you have what you need to extract your bike? People, winch, or block and tackle?
We did some testing of three different systems, two of which you can take with you on any ride, and one of which is a good back up if not venturing too far, and it’s also ideal for loading your bike on to a trailer.
We spoke to Andy Lilienthal at Warn, Dave Peterson at BestRest, Jon Mason at Superwinch and PSSOR riding instructor, Bret Tkacs, who shares some great pointers on motorcycle recovery.

The Adventure Trio Returns - Terry, Sandy & Jack Borden
Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast
10/13/16 • 87 min
There's a saying that it isn't what you do in life that you will regret, it's what you don't do. With that thought in mind, the Borden family made a decision to go on a motorcycle adventure as a family. And once they made the decision, they knew there was no turning back.
A trip with the scope of the one they chose to do can be a scary thing, what with having to leave your home, friends, extended family, jobs and everything you know that has become the norm. And then there are the fear mongers, instilling in us all the bad and negative things that 'could' happen to us while we explore new territories. And the people who care for us that will worry while we're gone. And on the other end of the scale are those who encourage us, tell us it's the best thing we will ever do, that there is so much to do and experience in the world, and that it will change our lives forever. In 2014, the Bordens left on their adventure, and they spent 15 months travelling through Mexico, Central and South America. Terry, Sandy and Jack share their experiences and stories which inspire and reassure us that this kind of trip will influence you incredibly, change your life and the way you think, for the better.

The Outback Way in Australia, also known as the Longest Shortcut, is a 2800 km trail passing through remote areas which means any adventurous off-roaders need to be prepared for anything, including a medical emergency. Retired school teacher, Doug Mullett, decided to take his V-Strom on the Outback Way, which typically takes about a week to traverse. He took riding courses, a motorcycle first aid course and had detailed emergency plans in place. But even the best laid plans can lead to misadventures, and on two separate adventures in 10 months, the Royal Flying Doctor Service was called in to rescue Doug when on both occasions he came off his bike.
