56. Space & Missile Innovation - How is space technology supporting our future?
Todd Wiest is a retired Colonel in the United States Air Force and is now the Director Of Business Development - Space & Missiles at Quantech Services, Inc. He provides insight into the future of space travel and innovations that will change the face of humanity. Todd studied the issues that occurred with the Challenger explosion in the 1980’s and says that after several launch failures in the 90s, they have learned a lot about the technology behind a successful launch, which is why we have advanced so much. We also discussed the issues of climate change and population increase, we may need to look elsewhere to repopulate, potentially outside of this earth or on an orbited International Space Station type dwelling. At the time of this recording, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has just launched its first two astronauts to space for the first time in history on a privatized rocket. They are sending small satellites up to space which fall into the categories of geo, heo or leo. The geo satellite is spinning at the same time and rate as the earth so the satellite follows that same spot on the earth which is why you are always locked on. GPS helps you have the ability to drive to different locations and timing it will take to get there. Satellites also help up with national security to tell us where missiles are facing and when they launch. In the future, Elon Musk is actually working on providing internet called Starlink to connect people throughout the whole work since continents like Africa only have about 40% connectivity and miniaturization is how we will advance in the future by leveraging space. Space technology has led us to the technology we have with the internet and cell phones. The Apollo actually had diverse teams that pioneered many applications and devices we have improved upon that allows us the convenience and communication we have today.
