Maura Casey, an award-winning journalist with a four-decade career writing opinion for major newspapers—including The New York Times—joins us to share her powerful story of survival, sobriety, and healing from growing up in an alcoholic home. The first in her family to get sober, Maura has maintained her sobriety for 39 years, despite the chaos of her father’s drinking and the deep impact of her sister Ellen’s life-threatening illness.

In this episode, Maura discusses her upcoming book, Saving Ellen: A Memoir of Hope and Recovery (Skyhorse Publishing, April 1, 2025), which details her family’s journey through her sister Ellen’s kidney disease, her mother’s determination to donate a kidney in the 1960s, and the immense stress that came with her father’s alcoholism. She shares how Ellen was one of only two living donor transplants in Buffalo that year due to the lack of advanced medical technology, and how she conducted in-depth research, speaking with Ellen’s doctor, Mary Hawking, and her mother’s friends, to piece together this powerful story.

Beyond the family’s struggles, Maura’s memoir also explores broader family dynamics, the challenges of setting boundaries with loved ones who threaten sobriety, and her personal journey of healing. She reflects on the resilience it took to break free from dysfunction and the hope that recovery offers. If we’re on camera, she’ll even show us the stacks of diaries she used to write her memoir!

In this empowering follow-up to my interview with George Haymaker, we dive even deeper into the science—and hope—of neuroplasticity. If you’re an Adult Child of an Alcoholic or grew up in any kind of dysfunctional environment, this episode is your reminder that you are not broken—you’re wired for survival. And the beautiful news? You can rewire those survival patterns into pathways of healing and self-trust.

We unpack how the brain forms habits through a loop of stimulus → response → reward, and how the mind will always seek out what feels familiar, not necessarily what’s healthy. Drawing from the work of experts like Dr. Tracey Marks, we explore why breaking old emotional habits isn’t about "just stopping”—it’s about replacing them with something better.

You’ll walk away with five simple, science-backed strategies you can start using today to gently reshape your emotional and behavioral patterns—no guilt, no overwhelm, just small intentional shifts that build over time.

🧠 Highlights include:

  • Why your brain resists change—and how to outsmart it with compassion
  • The truth about emotional reflexes (and how to rewire them)
  • 5 easy neuroplasticity tools to help you break free from limiting beliefs
  • How to create new emotional reward loops that support healing and joy
  • One empowering reframe to stop “rescuing” and start supporting (without self-abandoning)

✨ Plus, I share personal insights and tips tailored specifically for the ACOA journey, because healing looks different when you’ve been the peacekeeper, fixer, or invisible child.

This episode is your invitation to start reshaping the stories you’ve been living out unconsciously. Because your brain really is Play-Doh—and you get to be the sculptor now.

In this episode, we’re joined by George Haymaker — a certified neuroconstructionist coach, neuroeducator, and former entrepreneur with a powerful story of transformation. After building and leading several successful companies over three decades, George found himself battling a life-threatening addiction to alcohol and opioids. At his lowest point in 2013, he was consuming up to 50 Vicodin and two bottles of vodka per day. That crisis became the turning point that led him into rehab, recovery, and ultimately, a life devoted to helping others.

George shares how growing up in an unsettling environment led to anxiety, low self-esteem, and the need to self-medicate—patterns that followed him into adulthood. But his path of self-discovery didn’t stop at recovery; it took a deep dive into the science of change. Fascinated by neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to rewire itself—George became passionate about understanding how mental and behavioral patterns form and, more importantly, how they can be transformed.

Today, he helps individuals become “unstuck” from old habits and limiting beliefs by teaching them how to direct the natural change that’s already happening in their brains. His approach combines neuroscience with lived experience, empowering people to rewrite their inner narrative and achieve greater success in every area of their lives.

This conversation is all about what’s truly possible when we stop being passengers to our past and start taking the wheel of our own transformation.
