Introducing “ADHD-ish” 🌟
It’s been an amazing four-year journey since I launched The Driven Woman Entrepreneur podcast, and it’s time for an evolution. Earlier this year, I recorded an episode hinting at a rebrand, and now it’s finally here!
Rebranding the podcast has been a journey, motivated by the desire to help individuals with big ideas and busy brains—regardless of their gender or whether they carry the ADHD label officially or not.
Our new focus is on those who think, feel, and do things differently, celebrating their uniqueness and helping them thrive. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a freelancer, an independent professional or someone simply looking to make a living on your terms, this podcast is for you.
What to Expect:
A Broader Audience: We are expanding our community to be more inclusive, welcoming listeners of all genders who resonate with the topics and discussions.
Expanding the Definition of Neurodiversity: Acknowledging and celebrating those who think, feel, and do things differently, whether you are officially diagnosed or self-identify as neurodivergent, this podcast is for you.
Calling All Creatives & Indie Business Owners: Helping people bridge the gap between working in their area of passion and making a living doing so. Say goodbye to the starving artist and burned-out entrepreneur narratives!
Exciting New Content: We’re planning a variety of valuable and engaging content, including shorter episodes perfect for busy individuals.
Companion episode: Ep # 217 - “ADHD or ADHD-ish?”
I Want to Hear from You!
As we navigate this change, your feedback is invaluable to me. What topics are you most interested in? Who would you like to hear as a featured guest? Your voice matters here, and I am eager to create content that resonates with you.

Many of us start out with one goal in mind when we become an entrepreneur- creating a business around something we are passionate about. In fact “Follow your passion and build a business you love” is probably the most popular headline for a huge number of online business coaches nowadays. It’s a very seductive promise and a glamorous fantasy, but it is simply not enough to keep your business boat afloat.
Now, don’t get me wrong, passion is important, and maybe even necessary, especially in the beginning when you are scared shitless and have no clue, but unless you also keep your eye on the bottom line and balance your passion with profit, your business just might sink instead of sail. That’s why I invited my Portland pal and host of the Get the Balance Right Podcast, Heather Zeitzwolfe to chat with me today.
Heather is a certified public accountant, financial coach, and profit advisor who works with creative entrepreneurs and small agencies. We both have a sweet spot for first-time female entrepreneurs in their 50s because of our own personal histories. Her website lists her attributes as Rebel, Nerd, Activist, Entrepreneur, Goofball, Cult Film Afficianado, Vegan, and when I saw her name on the list of attendees for the She Podcasts Live conference I attended in October, I was determined to meet her.
What you can look forward to hearing in this episode:
- Heather’s non-traditional path to becoming a CPA in her 40s & starting her first business in her 50s
- Why she works with creative solopreneurs and small agencies
- Our lively discussion on money blocks and why so many women have them
- How she makes it safe for her clients to be honest about their numbers, dispelling money shame

It’s time to celebrate, Driven Women! This week is our one year Podversary and I am so excited to announce that I have consistently produced this podcast every single week for an entire year. In this solo episode, I take you back in time to my first interview as a podcast guest, through my journey of procrastination and perfectionism that delayed The Driven Woman for two years and what I finally figured out I needed to pull the trigger. If you have a goal or project that you just can’t seem to get off the ground, this one is for you.
Our Pod Praise (podcast review) this week comes from Biancakezz who writes:
“Do you ever want to feel understood. Like just understood and heard? Well, that’s what Diann manages to do. From her thoughtful guests, to her vulnerability and grit, these are great conversations that will light a fire under you to get out there and make it happen. As a person with ADHD I cannot thank Diann enough for sharing her tips, tools and resources with her audience.”
Her podcast is Please Don't Kick Me Out and her IG handle is https://www.instagram.com/pleasedontkickmeout/
Thank you, Bianca for this awesome review and for supporting the podcast!

Mastering the Power of "No"
ADHD-ish
01/04/22 • 36 min
Two weeks ago we talked about boundaries and if you haven’t listened to that episode yet, I suggest you do. Boundaries and knowing when to say “no” go together like PB & J. In this companion episode, I will be talking about not the mechanics of saying no (although I do give you a simple strategy for what to do when you’re put on the spot, near the end...) but more of the strategy behind the no.
If you are a solopreneur, creative freelancer, or indie professional, you are probably faced with a million requests a day. Knowing when to say “no” and why is crucial to having a profitable business and avoiding burnout. The focus of today’s solo episode is on service-based businesses, but the principles apply to most businesses, and to our personal lives as well.
Here are just a few of the highlights:
Are you prepared to respond to requests for:
- Discounts
- Bartering
- Payment Plans
- Guaranteed Results
- Extra Time & Attention
- Any kind of scope creep
We are going to discuss the fears that keep us from saying no when we want to:
- Fear of losing a client
- Fear of negative reviews
- Fear that unhappy clients mean we really aren’t good enough
And don’t forget to stay with me to the end where I will share a simple strategy for how to get yourself off the hot seat when you are ambushed with an unexpected request.

One of the topics I am asked to speak about the most, whether it is as a speaker, podcast guest, or with my own coaching clients is boundaries. The subject of boundaries comes up so often because it might seem simple, but is actually quite complicated.
There is no cookie-cutter, one size fits all situations solution. Boundaries are culturally determined, affected by our personalities, temperaments, stage of life, mental health, personal preferences, and whether or not we have a trauma history. See what I mean about being complicated?
In this week’s solo episode, I am going to open up the topic of boundaries (we will have a few more episodes where we will dig deeper into various aspects of the subject...) by reflecting on the differences I observed visiting the homes of various friends as I was growing up in S. California from the families whose kids didn’t even have bedroom doors to those where the parents could not enter without the child’s permission and everything in between.
Here are the episode’s highlights:
- What healthy boundaries look and feel like
- How to set boundaries like a boss if you don’t own a business
- The emotion that signals a boundary violation
- Boundaries while working from home
- Boundaries are about access and expectations
- How to move the boundary needle from uncomfortable to comfortable
Could you use some serious help with boundaries in your business and life?

When I first started coaching female entrepreneurs, we focused a lot on productivity and time management, because my clients wanted to get more done. So, I taught them the latest techniques to identify their most important goals and to accomplish them more efficiently. Over time, our coaching conversations had shifted to energy management - when to do our creative work and when to do the tasks that require more focused effort. But, they were still overwhelmed and exhausted.
The more I dug into their biz shizz, the more I realized what they needed most - obligation management. What am I talking about? How we deal with expectations - our own and other people’s. What I uncovered is that a whole lot of really smart, badass female entrepreneurs have shitty business boundaries, are over delivering and under charging and avoiding uncomfortable conversations with both their clients and their team.
So, this is the topic of this week’s solo episode, dealing with expectations. Because if you are doing more than you should be out of feelings of guilt and obligation, you are going to keep on draining your energy and not getting things done. So, sit tight and keep your seat belt buckled, while I share this week’s pod praise, from Jessica Foley who writes:
“I’ve been meaning to write a review since I heard about this podcast and listened to my first episode. If you are a driven woman and might be gifted (or have a higher than average IQ) LISTEN to Diann! It’s like she knows how your brain is working and how to challenge it! She’s amazing and so are her guests !” Thanks, Jessica!

Growing Your Business Through Intentional Constraint: a Client Success Story with Emily Rapp Black
ADHD-ish
06/22/21 • 41 min
This episode is a very exciting Client Success Story, featuring Emily Rapp Black, a college professor of creative writing, NY Times best selling author with four published memoirs including her latest, Frida Kahlo and My Left Leg. Emily is also a mother and entrepreneur with two businesses. She is a Peloton enthusiast, wickedly funny and has never let her ADHD or her prosthetic leg slow her down.
When it comes to business, many of Emily’s challenges were related to boundaries, settling limits and charging for the tremendous value she brings to her collaborative writing clients. Emily knew she was saying “yes” to too many kinds of projects which limited her income and time for her most important goals, like taking a month off every summer to work on her own writing projects.
In this episode, we talk about things we addressed through coaching:
- Identifying your non-negotiables and communicating them with confidence
- How personal values of sensitivity, empathy and generosity can create challenges in business
- Growing your business by embracing intentional constraints in who you work with, your scope of work and what you charge
Today’s Podcast Praise for The Driven Woman comes from Tricia Dempsey who says:
“Diann is my new business BFF! Her perspective of driven entrepreneurs is a breath of fresh air. She is such a role model for all of us because she is vulnerable and bold enough to speak about what we are all thinking and at the same time, holds space for those in the messy middle of reaching their goals. Thank you Diann for being a great example of what's possible for us all.” Thank you, Tricia!

It makes me angry that acknowledging a mental health diagnosis and receiving help is still a source of stigma and shame. I am grateful to the brave and clever people who have taken to YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, not to mention those who have started podcasts, to normalize mental health conditions by dropping their masks and sharing their struggles. They have done more to raise awareness and spread hope in the last few years than the psychiatric community has been able to do in decades.
In today’s solo episode, I’d like to share with you my thoughts about being a person with ADHD and what those four little letters mean to me. ADHD is a mouthful if you spell it out. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Not only is the clinical label confusing because people with ADHD can and do pay attention, and many of us aren’t hyperactive, but the words “deficit” and “disorder” are triggering enough to stop many from ever scheduling a diagnostic appointment.
If you suspect or know you have ADHD, you don’t have to pledge allegiance to any of the factions within this community (‘It’s a superpower!” vs “It’s a disability!”) but you do need to decide what you make it mean about you, your life and your abilities. Listen in as I share my journey with ADHD and the choices I have made that just might work for you too.

Today I am joined by Cait Donovan, who is a burnout expert, something that many female entrepreneurs are at risk of, especially the gifted, creative, sensitive ones. Cait is not only a burnout coach, but she is also a licensed acupuncturist, speaker, author, course creator and fellow podcaster.
Like many driven women, Cait learned about burnout the hard way, by going through it. She figured out how she ended up there, how to bounce back and now she is on a mission to end burnout culture. If we want to stay in the entrepreneurial game long enough to have a business that it both profitable and sustainable, staying alert to where we feel resentment and setting healthier boundaries is a must. You are going to love this conversation as much as I did!
This week’s Pod Praise comes from duckieduck64 (aka Marcie) who says: Welcome to a mind-blowing home for the ADHD professional, regardless of gender, to dive deeper into their adult ADHD journey, feel way less alone, and maybe learn a few tips along the way. Diann’s having profoundly intriguing conversations and so far, every episode I’ve listened to has deeply resonated in some way. So thankful to have found this pod, I really needed to hear it & feel hope!” And, as promised, if you are a freelancer, small biz owner or entrepreneur, I will read your review and shout out your business, too: Come find her amazing textiles at: https://www.instagram.com/twistedthreadsfabric/

Today I am joined by LY Marlow, who is an award winning author, speaker, podcaster, entrepreneur, philanthropist and women’s empowerment advocate. I am always on the lookout for guests who are inspiring examples of overcoming obstacles, regardless of what their specific challenges might be, and LY is no exception.
LY grew up with few advantages, in a family culture of domestic violence, teen pregnancy, low expectations and bad choices. We talked at length about identity, resiliency and the awareness that there is another way, from an early age. Her mission and message to help women recognize that the things we are afraid of, what LY calls “Monsters”, don’t have to stop us. We can not only stand up to our Monsters, but we can actually learn to use our fear as fuel.
In addition to her coaching and consulting business, LY runs a non-profit organization, “Saving Promise”, devoted to ending domestic violence, named for her granddaughter. When she is not running her business, her nonprofit, writing books, speaking, coaching or podcasting, LY enjoys good chocolate and Pinot Noir. She’s also very funny and enjoys a good belly laugh with a friend, old or new.
This week’s Pod Praise comes from Mary Rogers who says “ I have been a huge fan of Diann Wingert for YEARS! She's been a regular guest on many other podcasts, including my own. Every episode provides multiple AHA moments for women who just can't seem to "get it together". Thanks, Mary!
