Episode 049 | Peter Lio, MD, FAAD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology (board-certified in Dermatology). He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, he received formal training in acupuncture.
Dr. Lio is partner at Medical Dermatology Associates of Chicago and founding director of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center. He's also a founding faculty member and co-chair of LearnSkin's Integrative Dermatology Certificate Program (IDCP). Dr. Lio is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology’s Atopic Dermatitis Expert Resource Group and has written 3 textbooks and is an author on more than 200 publications. He speaks nationally and internationally about atopic dermatitis and integrative dermatology.
He has received a Leader of Distinction Award, a Presidential Citation from the American Academy of Dermatology, and numerous teaching awards.Dr. Lio is committed to providing the highest level of care to patients of all ages. His special interests include pediatric dermatology, eczema / atopic dermatitis, acne, dermatomyositis, and other inflammatory diseases of the skin, and he works tirelessly to integrate alternative and complementary medicines in dermatology for his patients and to help teach others (like me!) to bring that gift to their patients.

Butler. I can't imagine a better person for this discussion.

That was back in 2018 while I was a dermatology resident at Stanford, but I caught up with him shortly after he received the prestigious Sommer Scholars Program award for his outstanding contributions in public health leadership. When we recorded this interview on August 6, 2024, this scholarship was supporting his pursuit of a Master of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and providing him with enrichment activities to hone his leadership skills, develop his professional network, and engage with today's leaders.A bit more about my pal Niroj... Dr. Bhandari is the Founder of Drishya Health Care and holds roles as Research Associate and Executive Officer at the Institute for Implementation Science and Health. He also advises Federal Parliament of Nepal Member Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, serves as an executive member of the Authentic Leadership Institute Nepal, and is a consultant to the Ever Forward Club in Hayward, California.
Dr. Bhandari's diverse activities and passions underscore his unwavering commitment to healthcare, research, leadership, and community service. Dr. Farhaad Riyaz, MD, FAAD, is a distinguished dermatologist and Mohs micrographic & reconstructive surgeon. He excelled in his medical studies at the Medical College of Virginia, securing first place in his class and serving as President of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Dr. Riyaz's expertise includes skin cancer, Mohs surgery, complex facial reconstruction, cosmetics, hair disorders, and clinical trials. His training included internships and residencies in Michigan, a fellowship at Northwestern University, and business school at the University of Chicago. After 7 years in academics as an Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at the University of Texas - Austin and the University of Colorado, she opened her own direct care pediatric dermatology practice, Bluebird Dermatology, in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Julapalli is passionate about providing comprehensive, integrative, and personalized care that acknowledges and supports not just the physical aspects of her patients' skin conditions but also their unique social and emotional needs. She believes that by fostering sacred relationships of love, trust, and mutual respect and creating an environment and community whereby children and families affected by skin disease feel seen, heard, understood, valued, and supported, they are empowered, transformed, and healed in profound and life-changing ways.
Dr. Julapalli has been blessed to facilitate and witness these transformations through her involvement with support groups and camp programs throughout the country, including the American Academy of Dermatology-sponsored Camp Discovery, Paul Newman's SeriousFun Network, and the American Camp Association, as well as through local workshops and healing circles that she leads.
She is the founder of The Joyful Path, whose mission is to help children build the intuition of how to nourish their mind, body, and soul so that they may live, love, and serve generously with an open heart, intention, and purpose.In addition to her philanthropic pursuits in her local and national communities, Dr. Julapalli is dedicated to serving children abroad. She has volunteered her time and expertise at a pediatric HIV/AIDS clinic in Lesotho, Africa, at orphanages and schools in Nicaragua, with children and adults with albinism in Tanzania, and most recently with people in impoverished villages in northern Thailand.Dr. Julapalli's adventures also include being a children's book author, wisdom coach and yoga instructor for kids, Reiki master, world explorer (she has been to all 7 continents, all 50 states), avid hiker, meditator, sound healer/instrumentalist, and amateur swing dancer!
