Representation matters Bollywood!

Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Maharashtra, India.
The term is often used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; however, it is only a part of the larger Indian film industry, which includes other production centers producing films in multiple languages.
Bollywood films, like Hollywood until recently, have been criticized for a lack of representation of marginalized groups, including women, people from other castes, or color, and people from the LGBTQ+ community.
This lack of representation perpetuate stereotypes and exclude certain groups from being able to see themselves represented on screen. Like there is a ton of talent in the North East of India waiting for some sunshine.
Although in recent years, there have been some efforts to address this issue and increase representation in Bollywood films, but there is still much work to be done.
In this episode I call out for more diverse casting, more nuanced and realistic portrayals of marginalized groups, and more opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers to tell their own stories.
Tune in and share Aayanisms, and with those who care!
