A seam of emerald

A seam of emerald

Ray Knowles

Jack Kiely's father and grandfather passed down to him, stories of British cruelty and oppression. In the early half of the 20th century he experienced it for himself. Not surprisingly he was determined to secure an Irish Republic that encompassed the whole island and kowtowed to no-one. He was prepared to lose everything to achieve it. And in the end, that's what happened.

Birmingham, sparkhill. IRA,

For at least 200 years the Kiely's ran a small mill just a couple of miles from Borris in County Carlow. The income kept the wolf from the door but a few crumbs of economic success were no substitute for freedom.

By the time Jack Kiely was born the Irish had been relegated to third class citizens. Their sole purpose - to rent roll a largely absent gentry who cared little for them. He was determined to secure full Irish independence - and he was willing to sacrifice everything to achieve it.

Ray Knowles is jack's grandson - a retired pharmaceutical executive. He lives near Henley in Arden with his wife Tracy and dog "Dwayne".
