The Team at Sunshine City Counseling

The world is a messy place, it can be a hurtful place, too. It is also a place where we discover more of who we were created to be before the noise of everyone else told us how we should be. Through interviews, processing various topics or dropping just straight knowledge...it is our hope that you'll find this podcast to be a safe place for you to land. The Better Together Campaign

A Safe Place To Land

Mental health is a basic human right. It should not be reserved for the privileged โ€” for the elite.

At Sunshine City Counseling, we believe that every human should have access to excellent care for their body, spirit and mind. We understand that, for many of us, we are privileged to not even have to think twice about this. For other brothers and sisters, it is not something that has ever been afforded to them.

We want that to change.

It is our desire to be a part of the solution. Weโ€™re excited to bring a rad shirt that youโ€™ll be proud to wear knowing that it is providing hope and healing for those of us who may not be able to afford amazing mental health care otherwise.

SO. Buy a sweet tshirt and 100% of the profits will be donated to a fund that will provide reduced rate counseling services for all LGBTQ+ individuals.

It's our way to serve the broader community and celebrate their diversity this PRIDE month!

You'll hear a pretty candid conversation between Olivia and Christina, two of our therapists, discussing the heart and intention behind the Better Together Campaign and how it is growing beyond the LGBTQ+ community...

Hard conversation are...well, hard.

How do you have a healthy, constructive, successful HARD conversation?

Christina and Olivia sit down and chat a lot about their own personal experiences as well as the recipe for having good and hard conversations.

A recipe for having hard conversations.... ๐ŸŒฎ
โœ… bravery
โœ… knowing your experience and your truth separate from the other person and their reaction or how you โ€œshouldโ€ be feeling
โœ… I statements and not YOU statements
โœ… honesty. Thatโ€™s the only way authentic relationships work.

Lets jump in....

This time in space is unique. It is forever going to live in the history books. With the events that are swirling around, there are a lot of emotions that are attached to them.

Some of us have...

gotten sick.
lost loved ones.
feel immensely triggered.
lost our jobs.
not been able to pay our bills.
lost our small business.
become full time homeschooling parents whilst working.

Wherever you are, you're likely experiencing a lot.

There's a collective grief, suffering and trauma that is being shared by all.

This is part 1 of a 2 part series. In this episode, you'll get to know Sarah Odell from Sarah Odell Counseling in Seattle, WA as she and Olivia talk a bit about trauma, in general, and how COVID-19 is really pressing us to let go of our individualistic values and step into more of a communal mindset.

Lots more to say but lets just dig in...

Going to see a psychiatrist has long held some intense stigmas.

Probably more so than even seeing a counselor. ๐Ÿ˜ถ

In today's episode, Olivia sits down with Lisa Ramos-Archibald at Advantage Mental Health to chat all about...

๐Ÿค” The common misconceptions that keep people away from psychiatric care

โค๏ธ How Advantage Mental Health is different

๐Ÿ‘€ What signs/markers you should look for to know if medication might be the next best step in your health journey.

Lots of solid information in this one so give it a listen. Oh and Advantage Mental Health is the only spot we refer our people to for medication management because they are holistic, they care and they are just really great humans.

Olivia sits down with Lauren MacKellar -- one of our amazing counselors who works with with moms of all kinds -- to chat about how to maintain your sense of SELF as a mom.

It is easy for moms to loose themselves in their kids, their families. After all, they do SO much and it can be hard to figure out who you are besides being a mom.

We're here for you and to remind you that while being a mom is an extraordinary gift...it isn't all of who you are.

Grab a bevvie and lets process this together...

Hey! Hi! How are you!? Today is a real treat. Olivia brings on one of her favorite people, Rachel Miller. Sit down or go for a walk, grab your tissues, and get ready to be changed. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿฝ Olivia & Rachel walk through what it looks like to not be scared of your pain and the freedom that comes on the other side of it. Rachel is refreshingly honest in this episode about her journey over the last 5 plus years of what itโ€™s looked like to walk through heartache, death, & daily panic attacks. A stripping away of everything that essentially has taught her to slow down and let herself be at home again in her mind & body. We talk about โ€œsacred groundโ€ and what it looks like to be open about all your feelings and still be really loved by your people. Vulnerability, courage, coming home, & choosing to become something different altogether is so beautifully described in this episode. So take a listen- we promise - you wonโ€™t be disappointed โค๏ธ
