Episode 4 – Lawrence of Arabia
A Reel Education
08/01/13 • 34 min
Holy crap! This movie is so long we had to split this episode into three parts! Lawrence of Arabia is an undisputed classic no matter what the length so Melissa and Tim couldn’t wait to show it to Jena. There is significant geeking about the score, the flimmaking and Peter O’Toole. If you have never seen this movie, you have missed one of the great pleasures of film geekdom. Don’t let yourself miss out for too much longer!
Our next episode will be out on August 15th and we’ll be watching The Road Warrior!

Episode 19 – The Emperor’s New Groove
A Reel Education
03/15/14 • 39 min
One of the challenges we’ve faced is finding an animated film that Jena hasn’t seen. While we can toss just about anything else in front of her, she’s watched almost everything by Disney. What a delight it was, then when we discovered that she had never seen one of the most underrated Disney films of all time, The Emperor’s New Groove! She had seen the straight to video sequel but not the hilarious original. We have managed to rectify that situation so sit back and enjoy our conversation about a movie that is not nearly as Disney as you might expect.

04/01/17 • 50 min
This episode, we tackle the 2017 Oscar winner for Best Picture: Moonlight! After the crazy ending to this year’s Oscar ceremony, this film was crowned Best Picture. We’re guessing you haven’t seen it. In fact, neither Melissa or Tim had seen it either. Still, we brought in Pat Wick, who also hadn’t seen it, to be our guest. The film is notable for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the fact it is the first film featuring an all black cast to win Best Picture. It gave us a lot to think about and we hope you watch the film and it makes you think as well.
Next up, it is time to start exploring all of the actors who have played James Bond both in the Bond franchise and outside of it! We’ll be starting with Sean Connery and Goldfinger!

A Reel Education
07/15/16 • 33 min
This week’s episode features another guest host from our sister podcast: A Reel Education – Noir. Alee Elingsburg joins us to talk about The Lion in Winter, a classic historical drama about a fictional Christmas Henry II spent with his family. It is full of political machinations, scenery chewing dialogue, and a very youthful Timothy Dalton & Anthony Hopkins. Katherine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole are the stars who drive this whole acting train and they do a darn fine job. We hope you enjoy the movie as much as we did!
Our next move will follow Hopkins to the peak of his career as we watch The Silence of the Lambs!

We are joined by a panel of guests including regular Allee Ellingsburg, Scott Keever, and Richard Brantley. Almost everyone had seen the film before but this was the first time most had seen it in a theater. Few other movies are as transformed by sitting in a movie theater as 2001. We talk about a lot of things but one thing we didn’t record is a pre-movie segment. We just dive right into the film on this one so if you are used to listening to our opening segment and then watching the movie, look out! Spoilers are right out of the gate!
Next up, we are going to shift gears and watch Stop Making Sense.

Episode 24 – Dune
A Reel Education
06/01/14 • 47 min
For our newest episode, we subjected Jena to the 1984 train wreck that is David Lynch’s Dune! We are joined by two special guests. First is Kelvin Hatle, who has an unholy love for bad movies great and small. Second is Jerry Belich who, along with Melissa, produced a Swede version of the film that you can (and should) watch on Youtube! We try to make sense of a film that almost works on many levels and yet completely fails on all of them. Who knows if we succeeded?
We added the horrible song that Tim wrote for the credit sequence of the Dune Swede. It is after the closing music to the podcast. If you’d like to download your own version of the song (though we don’t know why you would), you can do that here.
Our June 15th episode will be about Cabaret and features special guest Windy Bowlsby!

Episode 78 – Halloween
A Reel Education
10/01/16 • 52 min
This week, Susanne Becker joins us to watch the horror classic Halloween! Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence star in a movie that pretty much served as the source for every masked killer horror trope from the 1980’s. Make no mistake, though, this film did them all first and, in many ways, it is still the best. While the film may not have aged as well as some of the other classic titles we’ve watched, it is still some very impressive work by Horror virtuoso John Carpenter.
Next up, we will be watching The Shining!
Note: You may be wondering where our episode of Bringing up Baby has gone. Sadly, we had severe technical difficulties with the recording and we were unable to salvage anything. Sorry.
