A Reel Education - Episode 4 – Lawrence of Arabia
play

08/01/13 • 34 min

Holy crap! This movie is so long we had to split this episode into three parts! Lawrence of Arabia is an undisputed classic no matter what the length so Melissa and Tim couldn’t wait to show it to Jena. There is significant geeking about the score, the flimmaking and Peter O’Toole. If you have never seen this movie, you have missed one of the great pleasures of film geekdom. Don’t let yourself miss out for too much longer!

Our next episode will be out on August 15th and we’ll be watching The Road Warrior!

Today, we return to the world of Stanley Kubrick to experience 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm glory. We are joined by a panel of guests including regular Allee Ellingsburg, Scott Keever, and Richard Brantley. Almost everyone had seen the film before but this was the first time most had seen it in a theater. Few other movies are as transformed by sitting in a movie theater as 2001. We just dive right into the film on this one so if you are used to listening to our opening segment and then watching the movie, look out! Spoilers are right out of the gate!

Next up, we are going to shift gears and watch Stop Making Sense.

play

01/01/15 • 32 min

For our holiday episode, we returned to the fabulous Trylon Microcinema to watch and discuss Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. We not only discussed the film but we found ourselves pulled into a conversation about the Hayes code and about 80’s synth tracks! Jena was saddened that this film featured a lot of David Bowie but not a lot of his package. Well, you can’t win them all.

Happy New Year!

Our next episode, we’ll be watching House of Wax!

And we’ll be returning to the Trylon in February for Murder on the Orient Express!

A Reel Education - Episode 5 – The Road Warrior
play

08/15/13 • 23 min

Our last episode was about the soaring greatness of Lawrence of Arabia. A great movie it is but we figured that we needed to have a little more fun. This episode, we watched Mad Max 2, which is better known as The Road Warrior. Many cars were wrecked. Very few lines were delivered. Awesomeness was achieved. We were joined by Melissa’s friend Fes Works to enjoy this fine example of 80’s post apocalyptic action.

Our September 1st episode will be a tribute to the late Ray Harryhausen as we watch The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad!

A Reel Education - Episode 77 – The Shawshank Redemption
play

09/01/16 • 49 min

This episode focuses on one of the best films of the 1990’s (or any decade): The Shawshank Redemption! Alee Ellingsburg returns to watch this prison drama that is structured about as well as a movie can be structured. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman star in this movie that was one of the first true home video phenomenons. Tim pretty much takes over this episode because he really loves the film. You’ll have to forgive him for that.

Our next film will be Bringing Up Baby.

04/01/17 • 50 min

This episode, we tackle the 2017 Oscar winner for Best Picture: Moonlight! After the crazy ending to this year’s Oscar ceremony, this film was crowned Best Picture. We’re guessing you haven’t seen it. In fact, neither Melissa or Tim had seen it either. Still, we brought in Pat Wick, who also hadn’t seen it, to be our guest. The film is notable for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the fact it is the first film featuring an all black cast to win Best Picture. It gave us a lot to think about and we hope you watch the film and it makes you think as well.

Next up, it is time to start exploring all of the actors who have played James Bond both in the Bond franchise and outside of it! We’ll be starting with Sean Connery and Goldfinger!

Moonlight (2016) Rating: 7.4/10 (341,808 votes)

06/01/14 • 47 min

For our newest episode, we subjected Jena to the 1984 train wreck that is David Lynch’s Dune! We are joined by two special guests. First is Kelvin Hatle, who has an unholy love for bad movies great and small. Second is Jerry Belich who, along with Melissa, produced a Swede version of the film that you can (and should) watch on Youtube! We try to make sense of a film that almost works on many levels and yet completely fails on all of them. Who knows if we succeeded?

We added the horrible song that Tim wrote for the credit sequence of the Dune Swede. It is after the closing music to the podcast. If you’d like to download your own version of the song (though we don’t know why you would), you can do that here.

Our June 15th episode will be about Cabaret and features special guest Windy Bowlsby!

This month, we began our new relationship with the Trylon microcinema in Minneapolis! They have great popcorn! For our first film, we watched David Lean’s epic masterpiece The Bridge on the River Kwai featuring Sir Alec Guiness and William Holden. There was much whistling and a bridge was destroyed!
