A Medic's Mind - Episode 257: A Christmas Story...in a Half-Shell
play

12/17/22 • 13 min

It was Christmas morning, and I was so excited to see what Santa had left for me under the tree. But as I raced down the hallway, I stopped short when I saw that my mum was still sleeping on the couch. She had been sick with cancer for a few months, and I knew that Christmas was going to be different this year. Christmas spent as a kid whose mum has a deadly illness can change the landscape of the holiday, but it can also bestow some of the fondest memories of what that time of year truly means...this is a story of when I learned that lesson wholly. A Medic's Mind - Episode 227: The PTSD List
play

01/11/22 • 40 min

This last Christmas while perusing the vastness of interweb cat videos, I came across a list. It captivated my attention because the list claimed to pertain to coping with PTSD. But upon reading the list, which was a virtual "how to" for family members living with someone afflicted by PTSD, the more the list began to read as problematic to me. So, I decided that I was going to read this list with all of you and we could discuss it together.

Welcome to this deeply personal episode of A Medic's Mind. Today, I share a story that's close to my heart – a tale of bravery, loss, and the unbreakable bonds forged in the crucible of shared sacrifice. It's about a photograph, a frozen moment in time that speaks volumes of our duty, our pain, and the memories of a fallen comrade. As I recount the days surrounding the funeral of the first Canadian medic killed in combat since Korea, I delve into the depths of brotherhood, the struggles of coping with loss, and the silent battles we continue to fight. From the somber processions to the heart-wrenching goodbyes, this episode is a salute to those who have gone too soon and a reflection on the scars they leave behind. It's not just my story; it's a tribute to all who have worn the uniform and carried the weight of such profound loss. Join me as I honor their memory and share the lessons learned in the shadow of their sacrifice.

A Medic's Mind - Ashes to Empathy: A Journey Through Fire

Join me in this deeply personal episode of A Medic's Mind as I journey back to 1998, a year forever etched in my memory. As a fifteen-year-old, my understanding of the world was turned upside down not just by the encroaching flames of a devastating wildfire, but also by the challenges faced by my family, particularly my mother's battle with cancer. Our story of survival, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit takes another turn in 2021, as I, now a retired paramedic with my own battles of PTSD, face the flames once more. Dive deep into this narrative as we explore the impact of wildfires on personal lives, the struggles of PTSD recovery, and the beacon of hope that always shines through adversity. This episode is not just my story; it's a testament to all who've faced challenges and emerged stronger. Whether you've been touched by nature's wrath, navigated personal traumas, or are seeking tales of resilience, this episode resonates. No matter your stance on vaccine mandates, restrictions or the virus, I think where we should be able to find common ground, is in comprehending that we are in control of our own actions. We get to decide how we are going to navigate our day to day. We may not be able to control the externals, but we are responsible for our interaction with them. And with that, we should be able to agree — DON'T BE AN A**HOLE!!!

I share an anecdote with you as I recover from the 2nd dose of Moderna. (Spoiler: I feel like poo).

My bestfriend and I were in New York City for a weekend, and we wanted to go out and have some fun. After doing some research, we found out that the creators of HIMYM (How I Met Your Mother) had based the bar featured in the show off of a very real bar in New York, so we decided to go. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. When we got there, the place was packed! We ended up drinking with the creators of HIMYM (Carter Bays and Craig Thomas) and had a blast. It was one of the pinnacle highlights of my life to date, and this is that story!

Things have gotten rather serious as of late, and with that seriousness there comes about a renewed sense of polarization that persists in the online realm. So, I decided that instead of getting bogged down by it all, I would transform that energy into something more beneficial and productive -- I decided that I am going to do a check in with all of you!

On this episode, I read for you a story that I wrote and produced that feels relevant to the times that we currently find ourselves living in.

It's important to check in on those we care about, just as it is to do with ourselves as well. I hope you can relate to some of what's written here today.

Wishing you all the very best,

A Medic's Mind.
