Fondly dubbed 'MagiTech-Noir', A Man Called Stranger is a serial audio drama about a lost spacer, suffering from amnesia while stuck in a corporate dystopia riddled with magic and conspiracy. While trying to survive and get on by, he and his new companions delve deeper into a mess of betrayal, sabotage, corporate fraud, and light amounts of murder in the... 2nd degree. Why did you start this show?
We started A Man Called Stranger because it was the type of show we wanted but couldn't find anywhere else. Drawn to gritty, complex stories with a mix of noir, cyberpunk, and supernatural elements, and we tried to combine those genres freshly and excitingly. Creating the show was also an interesting creative, and technical challenge- pushing our writing, world-building, and audio production skills. Importantly, it was an opportunity to tell stories within a massive, collaborative universe.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
Hopefully, listeners find A Man Called Stranger entertaining, a thrilling ride in a world of action, and intrigue, but beyond just enjoyment spark reflection on the themes woven into the narrative. Like most cyberpunk and sci-fi works, A Man Called Stranger deals with the consequences of unchecked power, corruption, the divide between the wealthy and marginalized, and the blurring line between humanity and technology. Inviting you to think sympathize or judge black and white, in a world of gray.
Which episode should someone start with?
The story technically kicks off with 'Black Collar,' where the main plot slowly begins to unfold. However, if you enjoy the full journey and don’t mind some rougher audio quality as we were finding our footing, we’d recommend starting with the four-part prologue 'City Business'. Those episodes were our first dive-in, and while the sound engineering improves with each episode, the prologue adds a lot of valuable context and sets the stage for what's to come.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
It’s still early in the show’s run for me (Bard) to pick a clear favorite. Each episode presents its own unique challenge and development. Maybe when we’ve wrapped up the 'Black Collar' arc, I’ll be able to give a more definitive answer! I will say, the further we go, the more the episodes reflect the tone and depth I’ve always envisioned for the show. AConfusedMistake's is City Business Part 2, yeah that checks out. It's great.
Which episode are you most proud of?
As of the time of writing this, our best episodes haven't been released yet, so I don’t want to spoil anything! But until the second half of Black Collar is out, I’d say we start hitting our stride around EP5 and get noticeably better at EP10. That’s when the show starts to feel more like how we envisioned it from the start. The storytelling, world-building, and sound design all come together in a way that starts to capture the essence of what we wanted A Man Called Stranger to be.
What is your vision for your show?
The vision for A Man Called Stranger is to see it run for a long time, as quite the over-arching story is planned, potentially even shifting from the longer season arcs to more episodic storytelling. The show is also part of a bigger universe, with plans for more stories to come (also in different mediums). AMCS is the product of friends low-key starting a production company, so this is just the beginning of what we hope to build in this world.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
A quick list of some favorites always includes the setting and storytelling of A Brave New Frontiersman, the amazing audio engineering and unsettling themes of Audiostorium, and fellow noir-esque companions like The 100-Handed and Inspectre. And We can't forget Black Jack Justice—that show is just great!
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
Simply, 'A Man Called Stranger' encapsulates the essence of our story. It reflects the mystery and intrigue surrounding our enigmatic protagonist, whose journey and experiences are the heart of the narrative. It also helps symbolize the exploration of identity and the fears of the unknown, inviting listeners to unravel the complexities alongside Stranger himself.
