A Life in Six Songs

A Life in Six Songs

A Life in Six Songs Podcast

A Life in Six Songs is a music-interview podcast focused on those particular songs that have a strong connection in each of our lives. These are not necessarily your favorite songs, but rather those times music was seared into your memory attached with what you were going through at the time.
Check out all the info at ALifeinSixSongs.com
So many of the discussions around music are about who the better band is or why a certain genre is not as good as another. Those discussions miss what is so fundamental about our interaction with and enjoyment of music. Here, we lead with Love, Kindness, and Curiosity, to counter the Hate, Anger, and Judgment in the world (and there is a lot of it!) We are a judgment-free zone where we do not critique our taste in music, but are focused on understanding the unique role music has played in each guest’s life.
"Don't ask me how I survived. Ask me what song I played on repeat when I thought my whole world was over." Listen to the songs from the show! Check out the Life in Six Songs Playlist on:

Here it is! The very first episode of A Life in Six Songs! Join us as we get to know one of our hosts, David, and his motivations for starting the podcast, as well as his life in six songs. David shares his heartwarming and, at times, heartbreaking journey, from his early musical encounters to his stint in the Army, his battle with PTSD, and his growing recognition of the therapeutic power of music. Every song offers a peek into a unique chapter of his life, be it the hair bands of the 80s and the transformative role of NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton' in his understanding of social justice, or the unexpected solace found in Britney Spears' 'Toxic' during his Iraq deployment.

Follow your hosts David, Raza, and Carolina every week as they embark on an epic adventure to find the songs that are stuck to us like audible tattoos to tell the story of who we are and where we’ve been. It’s a life story told through 6 songs. Take a listen, and as always, if you have someone whose life you’d like to hear in 6 songs, let us know.

Our guest, Dr. Tyler Calabrese, shares how his profound connection with music has been a transformative force in his life - his altar of hope, solace, and energy. Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody' reminds him of his Mom, and the uplifting messages of positive hardcore in H2O’s ‘Found the Truth Within’ helps him during challenging life transitions. The Canadian punk band Propagandhi's lyrics motivated him to use his privilege for those less fortunate. ‘Somewhere Out There,’ from the movie, An American Tale, provides the space to discuss toxic masculinity and the importance of healthy emotional outlets. We close by exploring the connection between art and mental health awareness in Tyler’s annual event, Speak Your Truth, through the songs of Tim Barry and Carly Winters. Pull up a folding chair, grab a drink, find a spot around the fire, and enjoy the conversation and community.

These are not just melodies to her; they serve as a soundtrack to her life. June reveals her transformation from a law student and attorney to a writer and filmmaker. Music played a pivotal role in this transition and her creation of True Bliss Television, which is “dedicated to promoting, portraying, and developing positive and loving images of people of color.” We have songs from Yolanda Adams, Alanis Morissette, ODESZA, Lauren Hill, and Marvin Gaye, not to mention an unexpected theme song from Friday The 13th: The Series. Join us on this musical journey with our guest, Sarah Mahmood, where we go from her first encounter with System of a Down's 'Chop Suey!' at age 7 to the “dance it out” release of 'La Mama de La Mama' during her demanding pharmacy residency. Sarah's story includes a move to Pakistan at nine and the traumatizing incident of bombs going off near her school. The Beatles' 'Hey Jude' and Kanye West's 'Flashing Lights' served as her therapeutic anchor during these challenging times. Our conversation illuminates the gravity of acknowledging trauma and seeking help. Mumford & Sons and Muse round out her songs. We finish with Sarah's entrepreneurial journey of producing educational content through her TikTok account, @PharmacyToks and her small business, Pharmacy Guides. Pull up a folding chair, grab a drink, find a spot around the fire, and enjoy the conversation and community.

In this episode, we have an amazing conversation with Don Michael Barbour, a retired US Army JAG and founder of the Veterans Legal Foundation. Don Michael candidly and honestly reflects upon growing up in a traumatic environment and his determination to graduate high school early at 17 to join the Army as his way out. AC/DC, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, and Elton John accompany us on this leg of the journey. He openly discusses Everclear's "Father of Mine" as epitomizing the feelings toward his father, which motivates Don Michael’s commitment to his own kids. From his service in the military to his advocacy work, his story is a testament to courage, resilience and the healing power of music. You don’t want to miss this one! This week, we explore the ebbs and flows of life with our guest, Ben Roorda, a husband, father, engineer, entrepreneur, and saltwater addict. How being brought up in a conservative evangelical home limited his exposure to music outside the church. How watching 'Under the Sea' from The Little Mermaid ignited his saltwater addiction and the realization that he could leave the life he knew, like Ariel did, 'Brown Eyed Girl' reminds him of his wife, and 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley serves as a life preserver during difficult times. We ride the waves of Ben's thrilling entrepreneurial and surfing adventures, with Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson’s ‘Boats to Build’ and Dick Dale’s iconic ‘Misirlou’. Ben's story is a testament to the power of pursuing one's passions. You don’t want to miss this one! Pull up a folding chair, grab a drink, find a spot around the fire, and enjoy the conversation and community.
