The typical story of the Yayoi Period is that it represents a transition between the egalitarian Jomon Period and the much more socially rigid hierarchical Kofun Period. Elite people emerged in various regions, fought one another for control and influence, and eventually one kingdom rose above the others to claim hegemony.
