While the English-speaking world tends to refer to the 1877 uprising of Saigo Takamori as the “Satsuma Rebellion,” this is not a direct translation of the Japanese name for this conflict. In Japan it is referred to as “Seinan Senso,” which literally means “Southwestern War.” After studying the conflict in greater detail during the research phase for this season, I’m inclined to agree with the cadre of Japanese scholars
