A Frame Apart

A Frame Apart

Ariel Fisher & Bob Barrow

It’s Critic vs Screenwriter. Sometimes ... maybe ... kinda? Welcome to A Frame Apart, the movie podcast from divergent perspectives under one roof. We’re your hosts, Ariel Fisher and Bob Barrow. Ariel’s a film critic and freelance journalist, and Bob’s a screenwriter. Each episode, we’ll take a look at two movies that have some sort of connection. Sometimes that connection will be obvious, and others not so much. On A Frame Apart, we aim to provide a variety of perspectives on cinema, not only from the standpoint of professionals on different sides of the camera, but as fans of media, pop culture enthusiasts, and lovers of cinema. We will speak passionately about subjects near and dear to us through film, and expound upon larger issues that permeate our cinematic culture and how we consume media. From horror to comedy, and everything in between, every great film is just a frame apart.

A Frame Apart - Episode 15 - The Big Sleep VS Double Indemnity
play

11/04/16 • 59 min

It was cold. Colder than the month of November usually felt. The rain dripped wet, and the smell of honeysuckle hung in the air. How could we have known that Noirvember could sometimes smell like honeysuckle? This month we’re participating in the month-long celebration of all things Film Noir with Noirvember. We start off with a look at two of the most iconic films of the genre: The Big Sleep and Double Indemnity. Based on the novels by Raymond Chandler and James M Cain respectively, these are the two Noirs we’re most familiar with. They serve as our gateway into a month of exploration and education with the cinematic style that’s so hard to pin down. So grab a stiff drink, steer clear of those dangerous dames, and join us this Noirvember.

We discuss the differences between the two, and some of our favourite Neo Noirs through Chinatown and Dark City. It’s a taught episode, as things get heated when Ariel realizes how she really feels about the latter, and both of us come to grips with the former. To start off 2017, we wanted to do something special. So, in the spirit of going big or going home, we decided to take a look at "The Shining", The Shining, and, you guessed it, The Shining! That's right, folks, we're pitting the novel against the King-supervised miniseries, and Kubrick's vastly divisive masterpiece. So whether or not you've read the book, attended therapy to try and forget the miniseries, or think Kubrick walks on water, join us as we check into the Overlook, and discuss issues with adaptation in The Shining. Also this week, in honour of the late Carrie Fisher, we get frank about mental illness. As we both live with depression and anxiety, we felt it important to speak openly about the way these issues affect our lives. If you're struggling with anxiety, or depression, or know someone who is, visit the links below. We hope you find them helpful. And remember, it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help; it's a sign of being seriously kickass. With Christmas just around the corner, our second year of Noirvember is drawing to a close. We started the month with a look at the roots of Noir by way of the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari versus M. From there, we journeyed to the Golden Age of Noir, and found out just how flexible the style can be with Laura versus the Night of the Hunter. To wrap up the month, we're looking at Neo-Noir with Blast of Silence versus L.A. Confidential. Join us as we discuss Noir's Pulp roots, Neo-Noir's self-reflexivity, and everything we've fallen in love with and learned about the genre! A Frame Apart - Episode 2 - Independence Day vs San Andreas
play

08/05/16 • 67 min

On this week’s episode of A Frame Apart, Ariel and Bob face off Independence Day versus San Andreas, taking a loving look at the disaster flicks of yore, a genre they both have an unhealthy affection for. Through these, they discuss the benefits of practical special effects, the pitfalls of too much CGI, and the dreaded Phantom Camera Syndrome (also known as PCS). They then dive into a discussion of the latest installment in the ID4 franchise, Independence Day: Resurgence, a topic on which they have many, many opinions. From the film that proved floppy discs could save the world, to the film where the Rock saves his family from the San Andreas fault, and the “resurgence” that just couldn’t resurge, tune in to find out how every film is just a frame apart!

A Frame Apart - Episode 98 - A Family Affair: Ariel and Derek
play

07/13/18 • 108 min

It's week two of A Frame Apart's A Family Affair, and that means we're that much closer to episode 100! This week we welcome our second of four very special guests, Ariel's big brother, Derek Fisher! This week's siblings are talking about a very strange selection of films. These weren't their favourites growing up, nor were they necessarily the most influential films for the Fisher kids. Instead, these three films hinge on a common theme: nostalgia and forbidden content. From the Dad-approved The Karate Kid (the original from 1984, of course), to Poltergeist (also the OG, from 1982), the parent-approved horror flick that Derek, four years Ariel's senior, was allowed to watch first. It all wraps up with the ultimate forbidden cinema: Natural Born Killers. Derek was a shocking 10 years old when he saw the controversial Oliver Stone flick, and Ariel was just 6! Tune in to the episode - we have stories to tell! Next week's guests are two of our favourite women of all time - our mothers! That's right, episode 99 features Ariel's mom, Silvia Mac Con, and Bob's mom, Vicki Barrow, as well all gather round the mics to discuss the films that mattered most to us growing up. Ariel's selections include The Sound of Music and A League of Their Own, while Bob's include the original Doctor Doolittle (1967), and something completely different: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Let's just say it's an interesting conversation! MOST IMPORTANTLY! We'll be wrapping it all up with a very special guest on our 100th episode. None other than The Matinee Cast host himself, Ryan McNeil! What's even more important is that WE'LL BE STREAMING THE ENTIRE RECORDING PROCESS LIVE ON INSTAGRAM! That's right! On Sunday, July 15th, at approximately 7:30pm EST, tune in to @AFrameApartCast on Instagram to see the whole thing live and uncut!
