A Beautiful Church - Rev. Randy Jackson, Part 1: The Multi-Ethnic Church
play

11/22/19 • 21 min

The mission of this podcast is to highlight the beauty and diversity of God’s Church – both in Chattanooga and the Church at large.
Meet Reverend Randy Jackson, a Chattanooga-area (north Georgia, to be specific) pastor who is, according to Adam, a “unicorn” of sorts: Randy is an African American ordained in the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA). In this episode, Randy shares the theological issue that led him to join the PCA and talks about what it’s like to pastor a diverse congregation.
After becoming a believer while in the military, Randy had to grapple with issues of race and racism in deciding if he wanted to continue in the Christian community. But it was the critical question of whether or not he could lose his salvation that steered him towards Reformed theology and the PCA.
Now, Randy is a Pastor at Grace PCA in Dalton, Georgia. Responding to the increasing population of Spanish-speakers, Grace chose to integrate Spanish into their services to allow Christians from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to be a part of the same congregation. Listen in to this episode to hear more about Grace and how Randy has personally been impacted by his church.

A Beautiful Church - Athanasius and Reason (Part 1)
play

12/09/20 • 22 min

The mission of this podcast is to highlight the beauty and diversity of God’s Church – both in Chattanooga and the Church at large.

Is Scripture or philosophy (reasoning) more useful in defending the faith? For both Athanasius and twenty-first century Christians, the answer is, “it depends.” In this episode, the group looks at Athanasius’ use of philosophy in On the Incarnation and discusses why we should use the same approach today. Along the way, they discuss philosophy’s place in Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant doctrine.

Although Athanasius uses Scripture aggressively in the portion of the book addressed to the Jews, On the Incarnation starts out with more philosophical arguments. There is some discussion about whether or not Athanasius is doing this on purpose, but David quotes directly from the text to show how the author is intentionally referencing Greek philosophy to appeal to a non-Christian audience. The group agrees that reasoning from Scripture is useful only if the audience knows and adheres to Scripture, but because our culture is largely “biblically illiterate,” philosophical reasoning is more appropriate and more convincing. The Catholic church in particular has formally embraced the use of philosophy in apologetics.

Listen in to this conversation to hear more about Catholic and Protestant takes on philosophy and how Scripture itself promotes this form of reasoning.

Fr. Rigdon breaks down some of the challenges he and his mission have faced in living out this calling and perhaps one of the biggest challenges the western Church faces today. Listen in to our conversation and hear how a posture of thanksgiving and offering unto the Lord has continued to bless this community.

The mission of this podcast is to highlight the beauty and diversity of God’s Church – both in Chattanooga and the Church at large.
What comes to mind when you hear the word “sabbath?” In this episode, Adam and Micki Ann address preconceptions about the Sabbath and show why this sacramental time is an invitation not just to rest but to deepen intimacy with God.
As Adam shares, a mandatory Sabbath day can seem like the act of an “oppressive overlord,” but this couldn’t be farther from the truth; the Sabbath a holy, consecrated day, but it’s also an acknowledgement of human limitation and our intrinsic need to take a break from work. In fact, we’re encouraged to think about what “taskmasters” in our lives are keeping us from rest and peace. Of course, there’s mystery in why God made this day holy and blessed, and the only way to understand this better is to seek His heart.
Listen in to this episode to hear some practical steps for creating a day of rest. Plus, Micki Ann and Adam answer an important question: what if you work on Sundays?

How can the Ten Commandments be used as a positive spiritual practice? In this episode, Adam and Micki Ann move past the common negative view of the Ten Commandments and show how they can be used to bring us closer to God and the life He created us for.
Especially in the context of creation, the Ten Commandments help answer the question, “What would my life be like if it was as God intended?” They act as a calling both to holiness and to human flourishing. Through prayer (and memorization!), the Ten Commandments can be used to evaluate our own lives, allowing God to reveal areas of sin and help us realign ourselves with His morality.

A Beautiful Church - Rev. Randy Jackson, Part 3: Pastors United in Prayer
play

12/06/19 • 27 min

The mission of this podcast is to highlight the beauty and diversity of God’s Church – both in Chattanooga and the Church at large.
There are many reasons why pastors don’t hang out together: busyness, theological differences, fatigue, and even ego. But, as Randy and Adam discuss in this episode, praying with others in ministry doesn’t just help unify the church – it helps safeguard pastors against the Enemy’s lies.
Although Randy only (typically) attends his prayer group twice a month, it makes enough of a tangible change in his life that his wife encourages his participation. One of the main benefits of this time is being able to share the struggles, responsibilities, and experiences that only other pastors can empathize with. This is the key to dealing with what Randy calls the “satanic” tactic of isolation, making pastors believe they’re alone or that they can or should be self-sufficient in ministry.
Listen in to this episode to hear more about Randy’s fellowship with other pastors as well as an illustration from Adam on how prayer groups can be effective for all believers.
