Alfred is part of the LGBTQ community and a devoted Christian. He runs a ministry in Chicago and The Alfred Platform, a business dedicated to enriching the relationships that members in the LGBTQ community have with themselves, each other, and with God.

In this episode, we dig deeper into the complex layers of identity. We discuss the miseducation on both the LGBTQ and Christian communities.

Manny celebrates his tenth year of being sober this year. Manny grew up in California and was in and out of jail for most of his teenage and early adult life. He was deported to Mexico more than once and was heavily addicted to drugs. One night, after a few days of binging on drugs, he came across a 24 hour rehab home. He knocked the door at two in the morning and they allowed him in. He had been sober ever since. Today, Manny has his own business, travels, and gives most of his time back to the rehab home that changed his life.

Carmen was born and raised in Waukegan by her single dad.

She was deployed twice to Iraq and is currently pursuing her masters in social work to help veterans.

Joining me today is Lissette Jacobson.

Lissette is a principal at an elementary school. She was born in the southside of Chicago and moved to Waukegan at the age of 8. We discuss her educational journey as a first generation college student and first generation Mexican American.

Welcome to the third episode of the Latinas in LGBTQ series.

Growing up in Mexican catholic family, I was only exposed to the heteronormative norms of society. So I looked for gay content on the internet like Youtube and Instagram and I discovered that it shadowed my reality. There is content out there but hardly any from Mexican, Latina, or children of immigrants stories. For this series, I recorded with Latinas in the LGTBQ+ community and I am excited to share their stories with you.

Joining me today is Laura Fernanda Ruiz. She is a Mexican writer, author of ‘Palabras de Desayuno,’ she owns a media production company and is the co host of ‘Las Provincianas Podcast.’ Fernanda lives in Mexico City along with her wife and she joins me to share about her coming in and coming out story.
