Today we discuss with Chief Mike Turner the uniqueness of policing in the “South.” The Right to Work vs Unions, good will, community policing, work-life balance, faith, personal accountability and much more.
In 1990 Mike spent six months studying at the Dallas Police Academy in Texas, then returned home and joined the Summerville (SC) Police Department. Mike started as a patrolman and eventually rose to assistant chief.
In 1998, he joined the Dorchester County (SC) Sheriff’s Office as operations major. Mike oversaw all aspects of the Office’s law enforcement duties: patrol, investigations, and the emergency response team. He graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in 2000. He also won several awards for his work, including Officer of the Year.
Mike went to work for Dorchester 2 School District in 2008 as director of safety, security, and emergency management, handling such responsibilities as liaising with local law enforcement agencies, supervising emergency school evacuations, and much more.
In 2018, Mike returned to his alma mater, this time to work rather than study. He currently is Chief of Public Safety at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mike is a member of FBI National Academy Associates, the South Carolina Police Chiefs Association, and other law enforcement groups.

On this episode we are joined by Melissa Woolever, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor to discuss mental health considerations and options for the police. Melissa helps us to better understand the stigmas that may surround the treatment of mental health for police officers. We also discuss how proper treatment is becoming more prevalent in many law enforcement agencies, which is essential for the prevention of professional dissatisfaction, poor job performance, addiction and suicide.
Melissa Woolever is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. She received her undergraduate degree with honors from Roosevelt University in Chicago. She majored in Clinical Psychology and received a minor in Sociology. Melissa went on to earn her Masters degree from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. Her clinical training sites include The Safer Foundation and The Chicago Academy High School.
Melissa views each client as unique and customizes treatment to fit each client’s individual needs and goals. Melissa enjoys incorporating humor and empathy into her practice and strives to create a comfortable and safe place for each of her clients. Melissa has specialized experience treating teenagers and young adults dealing with depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, self-injury, behavioral issues, and who have been involved with the Juvenile Justice system. Melissa pulls from many different theories including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness to ensure comprehensive treatment for her clients and to create a treatment plan that fits the clients symptoms, strengths, and goals.
Melissa also utilizes groups as a means of working on self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and emotion regulation to help individuals live a fuller and more balanced life. Melissa’s clinical interest include: self-esteem, developing/improving coping skills, reducing feelings of depression and anxiety, challenging dysfunctional thinking patterns, minimizing impulsivity, adult and adolescent life transitions, and LGBTQ issues.
Finding the strength and courage to make lasting change can be challenging. Knowing this, Melissa works with each client to help him/her learn more about him/herself and to build the rapport needed to help each client navigate through this process.

Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith retired in 2009 as a 29-year veteran of a large metropolitan police department in the Chicago suburbs. Beginning her career as a police dispatcher at age 17, Betsy became an officer four years later and has held positions in patrol, investigations, narcotics, juvenile, hostage negotiation, crime prevention and field training. She received her four year degree from Western Illinois University in 1991, and was a class officer and graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s School of Staff and Command in May of 2001.
As a sergeant, she supervised her department’s K-9 Unit, served as a field training sergeant, recruitment team sergeant, bike patrol coordinator, Crowd Control Bike Team leader, and supervisor of the Community Education/Crime Prevention Unit. Betsy served on the Elderly Services Team, the Crisis Intervention Team, and was a proud founding supervisory member of NPD’s Honor Guard Unit. Betsy received numerous awards and commendations from her police department as well as many local and national awards for her performance as a police officer and supervisor.
From 1999 – 2003 Betsy hosted various training programs and was a content expert for the Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN), is currently an on-air commentator and advisor for the Police One Academy and was a featured character in the Biography Channel’s “Female Forces” reality show.
She has been a law enforcement trainer for over 20 years and was a content expert and senior instructor for the Calibre Press “Street Survival” seminar from 2003 through 2012 where she also created the “Street Survival for Women” seminar. Betsy is a popular keynote speaker at conferences and events throughout the United States and has trained in various international venues. Since 1995, Betsy has authored hundreds of articles for law enforcement, government and civilian publications including Innovations in Government, Police Marksman, Law and Order, Police Chief, Law Officer, PoliceLink.com, PoliceOne.com, LawOfficer.com and various civilian firearms magazines through Harris Publications including “Combat Handguns.” She served on the advisory board of Police Marksman magazine, is currently a featured columnist and video contributor on both Officer.Com and PoliceOne.Com, and is an author, spokesman, and program host for the National Police Association.
Betsy is the creator of the only course of its kind for women in law enforcement, “The Winning Mind for Women” and is the owner of The Winning Mind LLC. Together, Betsy and her husband Dave develop and instruct cutting edge courses and travel extensively, bringing their inspirational messages throughout the world. Former police lieutenant Dave Smith is an internationally known speaker, writer and law enforcement expert. Dave attended United States Naval Academy and then completed his degree at University of Arizona while fighting forest fires with the “Coconino Hot Shots.” He began his police career with the Tucson Police Department and in 1978 he joined the Arizona Department of Public Safety. As a career police officer, Dave held positions in Patrol, SWAT, Narcotics, Training and Management.
In 1980 he developed the popular "Buck Savage" video training series, was the lead instructor for the Calibre Press "Street Survival" seminar from 1983 to 1985, and was instrumental in developing Calibre's timeless "Tactical Edge" officer survival book. Dave holds numerous instructor certifications in firearms, defensive tactics, and human performance and is a proven expert witness and consultant.
In 1989, Dave joined the Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN), developing and hosting cutting-edge police, security and public safety training as its Director of Education and was the general manager of Calibre Press until January of 2002. Dave continued to instruct the “Street Survival” seminar through 2012 as its senior instructor and he managed the most comprehensive update to the seminar since 2003. Dave has authored hundreds of articles for publications including Police Chief, Law and Order, The Trainer, Police Marksman, the Calibre Press Newsline, PoliceOne and POLICE magazine.
Dave is currently the owner of “Winning Mind Seminars” and is a regular columnist for POLICE magazine and PoliceOne.Com.

Trooper Bob was born in a refugee camp in Baden, Austria after his parents escaped from Hungary. His family came to the United States with just $500 and made the town of Fairfield, Connecticut home. Trooper Bob is a veteran of the U.S Navy. He enlisted after graduating from high school. During his four year enlistment, he served in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield. While serving on USS Mount Baker, he traveled to Spain, Italy, Norway, and Nova Scotia. In August 1994, he joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol. He was stationed in Dorchester County until 2007 when he became a spokesperson. Bob earned the Trooper of The Year award in 2007 for helping a woman whose home had burned down. He is probably best known for his clever safety messages on social media. In 2018, he won an Emmy for his Drunk Driving Emoji Public Service Campaign. Commercials aired across South Carolina and the message was on 170 billboards across the state. In his off time, Bob enjoys spending time with friends and family including his grandson. He loves to volunteer and to help raise money for Special Olympics.
