1912 Exiles - #138: Rob Phillips, BBC Radio Wales
play

08/21/23 • 45 min

After years of him asking us to call him on a Saturday evening, he decided to call us! An absolute delight to have Rob Phillips, one of the premier voices of Welsh football on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Wales Sport - and a 1912 Exiles listener at that - join Jamie Harris for a chat.
A Newport-born boy, he shares stories about his time reporting on the club in the 80s; his interactions with the likes of Justin Edinburgh, Dave Boddy and Graham Westley; and in more recent years in the Flynn, Rowberry, and Coughlan tenures.
He also shares stories from covering some of our biggest games in recent years, including having to stand on a box to commentate on the Great Escape finale, and a run-in with Justin Edinburgh's crystal ball.
An enlightening, honest, and entertaining presenter, who leaves you feeling buoyed and optimistic, but mostly reminds you that it's just fun to watch football. (Rob, not Jamie.)
We'll be back with some of our panel after next weekend's match against Sutton. Do send any feedback to us via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn in the meantime.
We also, as you may notice, have a new theme tune - a big thank you to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for giving us permission to feature their single Discoland. Please support them by buying their music, catching them live or making a donation to Kidscape who are their chosen charity.

1912 Exiles - #208: Curate's egg
play

12/30/24 • 46 min

Welcome back, hope you had a good Christmas. Ed didn't get to any of County's festive fixtures, so he sought to find out what he missed by speaking to Amber Arnie, Wise Dan and Dave "Yr Alltudion" (whose Welsh-language County updates can be found on Twitter, Bluesky and Mastodon). The gang discuss the league games against Franchise FC, Bromley and Walsall - and what needs to change ahead of the big double-header against AFC Wimbledon and Morecambe.

We'll be back after those two home games with our next episode. In the meantime, you can get in touch via your social media platform of choice if you have any thoughts you want to share.

Thanks as always to the Riverside Sports Bar (the home of Welsh sports fans) for their valued support for the pod, and to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for letting us use Discoland as our theme tune. If you like what we do, you can throw us a few pennies on our ko-fi page to help with the pod's running costs.

Be good to yourselves and each other, and above all Keep It County!

1912 Exiles - #170: Notts, Gills and crypto
play

02/19/24 • 47 min

Another 'pod of two halves' as we balance analysis of on-the-pitch matters with a broader look at other issues. Part 1 of this episode is a catch up between Rhys and Ed about the home matches against Notts County and Gillingham, with County demonstrating great 'bouncebackability' powered by Will Evans' scoring antics. Then, in Part 2, we speak with Martin Calladine about his new book, No Questions Asked: how football joined the crypto con. The book is excellent, and comes highly recommended by your 1912 Exiles, and Martin gives us his insights into how poorly-regulated and often criminal crypto enterprises have preyed on football fans.

In the absence next weekend of County playing a proper game against an opponent who deserves to exist, we'll bring you another cracking interview in lieu of a match report; stay subscribed so you don't miss out. In the meantime, you can follow us on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn and send us your thoughts and questions. You can also contribute a voicenote via our Speakpipe page or donate the price of a Bovril towards our running costs through our ko-fi account.

Thanks as always to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for letting us use Discoland as our theme, and to all of you for listening.

1912 Exiles - #146: Unknown pleasures (a.k.a. Salford away)
play

10/01/23 • 22 min

After a tumultuous week off the pitch, Newport County get back to the bread and butter of fourth division football. Ian’s back on the northern beat - this time in the suburbs to the north of Manchester city centre.

Ably assisted in the tactics truck by friends of the pod Stu, Fraser, and Ollie, Ian covers #floodlightwatch, #bovrilwatch - and the game as well.

As always, you can contact the show via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn with any questions or comments.

Our theme tune is Discoland, reproduced with permission of Tinty & The Bucket Hats. Please support them by buying their music, catching them live or making a donation to Kidscape who are their chosen charity.

ICYMI: Ed joined the BBC Radio Wales team on Friday night in the aftermath of the Huw Jenkins vote. Huw appeared on the show, before Ed spoke with Rob Phillips and Jason Perry about what this means for the club. You can listen back here (11 minutes in).

1912 Exiles - #199: Fire up the Tactics Truck
play

10/20/24 • 36 min

After a dozen games of the Fourth Division season, we decided now was the time to have a bit of a deep dive into tactics. Ed, Ian and Jack discuss fulcrums ("fulcra"?), double pivots, and inverted wingers, drawing on what they collectively saw in recent games against Harrogate, Bradford and Chesterfield. We also check in on progress by our featured local teams in focus, Undy Women AFC and Chepstow Town, and Jack starts a beef with Spytty The Dog.

As ever, you can contact us via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. We also say at the start of the pod that if you visit our ko-fi page then you can either give us a few quid a month, or you can buy one of our few remaining sticker packs - all funds support the pod with our costs.

Many thanks for listening - and thanks also to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for letting us use Discoland as our theme tune.

1912 Exiles - #176: Blown away at Barrow
play

03/24/24 • 23 min

It's another Ian Street match diary, but sadly without quite the same level of joie de vivre as last weekend. The "fifth Beatle" of the pod, Ollie, also makes an appearance - but neither of them find much to warm the soul from a frustrating and cold afternoon in Barrow.

The podcast, like the NHS, remains proudly free at the point of need. However, if you are able to chip in to support what we do then you can visit our ko-fi page; anyone setting up a regular £2pm donation will get a little thank you present in the post. And if you can't spare any money, that's fine - but please do recommend us to a friend and leave us a nice review somewhere.

We've not had a full panel discussion for a while, and the plan is to do that next weekend to review the two Easter games and also pick up on other recent under-discussed moments - not least that 5-3 win against Morecambe! If you have any questions you'd like us to consider, get in touch via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.

Thanks as always to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for letting us use Discoland as our theme, and thanks to all of you for listening.

We were planning on having a quiet summer chatting about football shirts, but off-field business put paid to that.
It's pre-season so Triallist 1 and Triallist 2 are making their debuts on the pod. Jamie Harris is joined by Dan Grace and Ieuan Ellis to discuss the latest rumblings around the future of the club's ownership, the surprise news that a David Buttress-led consortium has bought out the Dragons and Rodney Parade, and what we'd love to see happen (even if we might be dreaming...)
There's still some room for transfer chat in what looks to be like a summer of relative upheaval.
This is the third in our series of close-season content. Over the next few weeks we will bring you a chat with County in the Community and shine a spotlight on how Newport City are getting on down at Spytty Park. Stay tuned for more, and in the meantime drop us any feedback via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.Support the show

1912 Exiles - #145: Huw Jenkins - snap verdict
play

09/29/23 • 27 min

At the end of a big night in Newport County's history, Ed and Ian jumped straight onto Zoom to consider matters. With Trust members voting 455-8 in favour of selling a majority stake in the club to former Swansea City chairman, Huw Jenkins, what might happen next? What will he bring to the table, how will our club change, and what role will there be for the Trust going forwards?
This was recorded 'as live' so apologies if the audio quality or lack of editing mean it's not as polished as usual - we wanted to get it out straight away rather than wait until tomorrow to edit.

1912 Exiles - #166: Man Utd preview
play

01/21/24 • 45 min

Yes yes, we know that there's the big victory over Wrexham to discuss – but we wanted to cynically capitalise on the extra interest around the Man Utd game, so we’ve created this big preview show. We’ll do a feature-length episode in a week or so to discuss how we managed to bring down the Gogs and also however we fare in the FA Cup Fourth Round.
In this preview, lovingly compèred by Jack, you will hear:

  • Jamie and Ed settle down for a cosy fireside chat in a London pub to dare to dream about springing a surprise...
  • Ian takes a look at the history books to answer the question “Is Sunday’s game against Man Utd the biggest County have ever played?” (spoiler alert – no)
  • An opposition preview from No Question About That – a Man Utd podcast who fill the gaps in our knowledge about top-flight football and offer insights on our opponents.
  • Reflections from Rhys on Eastleigh ("Rhystleigh"), who also fires up the Tactics Truck to analyse Man Utd's weaknesses.

At the start, Jack mentions our ko-fi - if you're able to throw in the price of a Bovril towards what we do, it'd be appreciated. If you're not, then that's fine, but do leave us a nice review or recommend us to a friend instead.
Contact us via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn with your thoughts. Thanks as always to Tinty & The Bucket Hats for letting us use Discoland as our theme, and to all of you for listening.

1912 Exiles - #132: County in the Community
play

07/11/23 • 26 min

We continue our gentle summer stroll through off-the-pitch matters around football in Newport, with a genuinely heartwarming catchup with some of the County in the Community crew.
Over the course of a few hours at Rodney Parade, Ed chatted with Dave Lewis (Football & Education Programme Co-ordinator) and participants in the new Fit Fans programme which helps men and women aged 35-65 who are looking to lose weight, get fitter and lead a more active life. But as we hear, it's not just about that - it's also bringing people together for companionship and a bit of joy.
We also hear from CitC's Chief Exec, and County legend, Norman Parselle - a man whose enthusiasm and spirit is so good for the soul that he should be prescribed on the NHS.
Honestly, if this episode doesn't bring a smile to your face, you need to have a word with yourself!
Be sure to check out our other close season specials - they cover the supporters' meeting in June (Ep129), a canter through what makes a great football shirt (Ep130), and an analysis of recent trust goings-on and transfers (Ep131). We've also got a pod lined up about our neighbours at Newport City, and a big season preview episode later in the month.
As always, drop us any feedback via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.Support the show
