There’s a new term in the longevity space and it’s “Strengthspan”.
Today we’re thrilled to have Tuire Karaharju-Huisman with us to talk all things Strengthspan and Positive Ageing. Tuire is a highly experienced physiotherapist and exercise physiologist whose career has spanned multiple continents and diverse areas of research and clinical practice.
Originally from Finland and now living in Melbourne, Tuire has spent over a decade as an academic lecturer and today is the Research Lead at HUR Australia where she now designs exercise programs and educates both staff and community members in aged care and beyond.
We mention a number of cool resources on this episode –

Imagine this – you suffer a nasty fall and go to hospital. You are discharged and the treatment plan includes a variety of medication to assist you in your recovery. Only problem is, no pharmacist has approved the plan. The medications suggested conflict and create a raft of negative effects on your body and your health.
Then consider that this is happening to every 3 out of every 5 people given such a plan where a pharmacist has not been involved.
The peak body for pharmacists in Australia recently published a damning report against the unneccesary financial, mental and health cost of incorrect medication use. Over 600,000 people have either been admitted or presented to emergency in a 12-month period, with over 50% of those being preventable. The total cost of admissions alone was $1.4 billion. Let that sink in for a little (especially if you beat yourself up over wasting $10 on an entree you didn’t need).
What’s more, this report received very little news in the mainstream media (except for this article in the Sydney Morning Herald), testament to the growing view that the mass media no longer covers information that is in the public interest – instead opting for anything that will attract eyeballs.
If we’re to age gracefully, and to help our loved ones do to the same, an awareness of how the health system is breaking down is essential.
In this first of two parts, we hope you feel alerted, and then empowered to continue on your 100 Not Out Journey.
*** Greek Island Trip Of A Lifetime Awaits ***

We return for the third time for 10 days of longevity learnings. Based in the village of Nas, where National Geographic conducted their Blue Zones research, we live with the locals and live like the most well-lived people on the planet. The idea of a sugar tax has hit Australia, following in the footsteps of countries including Great Britain, Fiji, Belgium, France and parts of the USA.
But is a Sugar tax the answer to our obesity problem here in Australia? You know where we are going with this. Of course not! If a tax on cigarettes has done little to stop people smoking, the $8.6 billion obesity epidemic is hardly going to be rescued by charging more for sugary foods. In this episode, we discuss our own solutions to the issue, including a shift in philosophy around food pricing, and a shakeup of the health system, just to name two.
You may also hear some singing and jokes as always in this episode 🙂

Do you remember the movie Sliding Doors with Gwyneth Paltrow?
In this episode we reflect on how some of our guests have experienced great joy, love and success only after going through harrowing experiences.
We use World War Two survivors Eddie Jaku and Ada Murkies as examples, who both fell in love with their life partners during or after the war. Would they have met their soulmates if it were not for the war? And then what of their children? Would they have been born?
Marcus and Damian both share personal examples. Marcus wonders if he would have been born if his grandfather’s first wife didn’t die shortly after giving birth to their tenth child. And Damian reflects on how he met his wife, Amber, and the synchronous and sliding doors moments that brought the two of them together.
An insightful, deep and meaningful episode of 100 Not Out.
*** MORE DEEP & MEANINGFULS IN IKARIA ***
If you loved this conversation, imagine doing it over looking the Aegean Sea on the Greek Island of Ikaria, also known as the island where people forget to die. Damian & Marcus return for the third time to run the 100 Not Out Greek Island Longevity Experience, and you’re invited. This enthralling chat on mindfulness with world leader Marvin Oka was too difficult to condense into one episode.
So on part 2 we explore how to deal with life’s problems in a mindful way. What do you do when the kids are going crazy? What about when you’ve had a fight with your partner?
How do you get through a tough day at the office in a mindful way?
We ask the hard questions about the tough times in order to gain clarity on what mindfulness really is, when to apply it, HOW to apply it, and how to deal with others who may not be so focussed on mindfulness!
We also discuss what type of growth people in positions of leadership need to undertake. There are three types which Marvin refers to near the end of the episode.

100NO 554: Genes, Gene Therapy & Longevity
100 Not Out
11/12/23 • 25 min
Have certain members of the longevity movement lost their mind?!
We’re quite taken aback by Dave Asprey’s invitation to his community to undergo Gene Therapy in a bid to prolong life. Follistain Gene Therapy to be exact, which he invites people to partake it at a cost of $US 25k. We’re not joking, you can see it all here It’s fair to say this approach to longevity – and gene therapy – completely goes against our ethos on 100 Not Out. In the comments of his post on Instagram, Dave tells naysayers that they are undergoing gene therapy every time they eat hot chips, and so we are already doing it anyway. He references epigenetics – the environment that we place our genes in – as the key. On that point we agree, however we take a more macro look at epigenetics, and reference our chat with Mimi Kirk on episode 11, where she took us through her family history, her genes, and her determination to live a lifestyle completely opposite to her family. 2024 Longevity Experience Care to join us in Ikaria and/or Sardinia in August & September 2024 for our 100 Not Out Longevity Experience? We’ve been going since 2016 and it’s fair to say these trips are a bucket lis trip of a lifetime. All the details at 100notout.comImage source: Instagram @dave.asprey
