With the Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button at the wheel, every game selection is a surprise! For this episode, Tom and Chris have spent an hour with HopFrog’s hybrid idle adventure game. Like many other incremental games, this one is known for being both simple and grindy, so that is sure to shape their feelings about this distinctly indie title. Will our hosts enjoy the break from their daily lives or will this game feel too much like actual work? How will they respond to the art style and general presentation of the mechanics? It took Tom twelve years to try this sequel.
The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button has made some interesting choices in the past, but the random selection of this action RPG developed by BioWare shall prove to be a decisive one. Tom played Dragon Age: Origins and its expansion (Awakening) back when they launched in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Then BioWare dropped this sequel just sixteen months after the original had hit store shelves. With such a short development cycle, could they possibly capture the same magic it had taken them five whole years to harness for the first game? Some thought they had, but many fans felt that the sequel was a tragic example of a cash-in. This would lead Tom to avoid this sequel at first and, without a strong recommendation from any of his friends, he simply moved on to other franchises. Over a decade later, the “Surprise Me” button has decided Tom should give this game another chance. Will he regret not playing it ages ago? How about Chris, who has never played any of the Dragon Age titles? Will freedom from any nostalgia prove positive or negative for his experience? Our hosts have played the required hour, but will they still want to fight darkspawn when the time is up?

The epitome of an indie game, this title was virtually entirely created by one person, Toby Fox. Strictly speaking, it is a 2D role-playing game about a child who has fallen into the underground and wants to return to the surface world, encountering all manner of strange monsters along the way. Beyond that, most of the decision making on how to navigate those encounters is left to the player, which leads to some interesting results. Will the narrative grab a hold of our hosts and demand that they keep playing after their hour is up? Will they respond positively to a modern game that looks and feels like it was made back in the 80s? Join Tom & Chris as they discuss their hour with this lauded indie title and come to a decision.

It appears that 2019 was a big year for downhill mountain biking video games. With an isometric view and stylized visuals, will this game do enough differently to escape the surface comparison? For this episode, we spent an hour with the first-person survival game developed and published by Hinterland Studio. If you did not already guess, we can confirm that this one is definitely an indie title... with writing, directing, and design credits all pointing to Raphael van Lierop. Don't be fooled by its humble beginnings, though, this game has seen many updates since its launch on Steam Early Access in September 2014. The question is, will all of these improvements simply go unnoticed by two people who have never played the game before? Perhaps more importantly, with multiple playable options available to them, will our hosts even end up playing the same game? The “Surprise Me” button is back in control and has quickly returned to tormenting Chris by picking another rougelike! This time our hosts take on the isometric dungeon crawler from Passtech Games, however, so perhaps the die-and-try-again elements will spice up the classic formula instead. Whatever their preconceived notions may have been, the rules state that Tom and Chris still have to spend an hour playing the game before making their final decision. Now that the time is up and the controllers have been put down, will they feel drawn to the dungeons in search of more treasures or have they already found the real reward... of being able to move on to another game? Because the “Surprise Me” button clearly enjoys skipping the first entry in every series, on this episode our hosts dive right in to the 2021 sequel to 2018’s Subnautica. Hopefully continuity will not be a major factor in this first-person, survival game developed and published by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. Our hosts have heard quite a lot about the original game, but surprisingly little about this second entry in the series. Apparently it started out as an expansion and then grew in scope to become a standalone product. Will this change in gears be evident in the gameplay? How will it stack up to similar games like The Long Dark? Just like proper scientists, our hosts have done their research and will now discuss their findings! Join them to hear their results!

What happens when the AI replaces your eye?
This mystery adventure game was both developed and published by Spike Chunsoft, who are probably best known for their contributions to the Pokémon and Dragon Quest franchises. This game is decidedly unlike those others, however, and the jury is out on how our hosts would classify this game's genre. Living somewhere between an old school point and click game like Myst and a more modern visual novel game like Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, this game is unlike most games that our hosts tend to play. We suppose that's both the promise and the curse of letting the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button pick out the games for review. As usual, Tom & Chris spent an hour with the game and are now ready to report back on their experience. How much of this game's mystery have they solved? Was it just enough to get them hooked but leave them wanting more? There's just one way to find out... give this episode a listen and learn their decision!
