Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - The Challenges of Massage Therapy Education and Practice with Dave Cordoviz RMT

Send us a text

Meet Dave Cordoviz, a new Registered Massage Therapist, in Vancouver, BC. Dave discusses the invaluable lessons he'd learn while juggling work at multiple clinics while working at his family's Filipino restaurant. This episode shares insights from Dave's journey towards establishing a successful RMT practice.
Navigating the labyrinth of healthcare education can be complex. We dissect the heart of massage therapy education itself—contrasting the atmosphere of RMT school settings with that of university, and unraveling the threads of clinical relevance into an outdated curriculum. We examine the educational landscape with a call for an evidence-based approach that benefits both aspiring therapists and future clients.
Dave and I share stories from our educational journey's, advocating for a shift towards curricula that arm therapists with more than just textbook knowledge. This episode is another push for Eric to challenge the status quo, and weaving a new narrative for the future of massage therapy education—one where adaptability, patient empowerment, and the strength of community are at the core.

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - Finding Balance as a Clinician and Continuing Education Instructor with Walt Fritz

Send us a text

In this episode Walt tells us about his clinical and educational experiences and how he made the transition from being heavily invested as an MFR focused therapist into being an evidence-based clinician.
We discuss the importance of finding an acceptable balance in our understanding, our communication and how we teach continuing education. Our treatment interventions aren’t always just about one tissue or a special technique, they are more complex than that and the outcomes people experience are more strongly related to the strength of the therapeutic relationship.
The willingness to embrace shared decision making is the core premise of what he wants learners to take away from his courses.
Research articles:

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - Palliative and Hospice Massage in a Death Avoidant Culture with Ashley Brzezicki

Send us a text

In this episode I have a great conversation with Ashley Brzezicki, an RMT and death doula, whose personal narrative and cultural insights bridge the gap between massage therapy and end-of-life care. Exploring this tender intersection, we shine a light on the human touch in healthcare—a touch that offers solace to those grappling with terminal illnesses and envelops their loved ones in the warm embrace of empathy and understanding.
Ashley's tapestry of narratives threads through our conversation, from confronting the cultural discomfort around death to the art of finding meaning amidst life's final chapter. We delve into the vital role of hospice care, a misunderstood haven offering more than just comfort in dying—it's about living each moment to the fullest, with dignity. Our discourse challenges the medical community's preoccupation with cure over care, advocating for a holistic approach where every healthcare provider, from the massage therapist to the hospice nurse, becomes a guide in the patient's odyssey of self-discovery and acceptance.
This episode calls out some of the noticeable absences in healthcare education, and we advocate for massage therapy to become a university-level degree. We dissect the ethical implications of outdated teachings and the significance of evidence-based practice, as well as the challenges practitioners face in the evolving landscape of Continuing Education. Our exchange extends beyond academia to the essence of patient-centered care, weighing the merits of various modalities against the need for genuine relief. Join us, as we unfurl the importance of compassionate healthcare and the enduring impact of a simple human touch in the profound journey of life's sunset.

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - The Student RMT Experience with Courtney Olmstead

The Student RMT Experience with Courtney Olmstead

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus)

Send us a text

This is the second episode in my series on new RMTs. Today we have Courtney, who is an RMT in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We had a great conversation about the need to adapt RMT entry to practice curriculum to make it consistent with current evidence and how the industry and more importantly the public would benefit from a shift in thinking from fixing people to providing more meaningful support and management.

At the time of this recording she was just finishing her studies in RMT school. Courtney started to develop a sense of skepticism during her entry to practice education so she started to search for information outside of her school environment. This led her in a search for updated knowledge which was challenging everything she was learning in school. When presenting this new information to her instructors she was frustrated because she was encouraged to not ask questions and to simply accept the knowledge that she was being presented with.

Courtney’s experience is not unique as it demonstrates some of the common problems our profession has with its entry to practice curriculum. We share a few suggestions of a better way forward which we hope the stakeholders will adopt.

Some wise words to take away from this episode, the more I learn the more I realize I need to know

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - Healthcare Entrepreneurship: The RMT Experience with Carlos Grouchy RMT

Send us a text

This is another episode on the new RMT experience with a deeper dive into healthcare entrepreneurship. I have a really interesting and enlightening chat with Carlos Grouchy, a Registered Massage Therapist who's working hard to make change in the wellness industry. Carlos has a unique, fun and evidence-based approach to massage therapy and wellness and he isn't afraid to question the status quo.
In our discussion, we address some of the unhelpful topics in the massage therapy field, as well as the challenges Carlos faced when thinking about opening his own clinic. Carlos shares his journey, his initial struggle with a lack of business knowledge, and the obstacles of building a brand in the healthcare space. He also illuminates how he's using social media to engage and educate the public about pain science and evidence based content.
We wrap up by looking at the trend of entrepreneurs transitioning their personal brands into brand empires and what that means for the healthcare industry. Carlos gives his take on how healthcare professionals can be educated on a comprehensive approach to wellness. From understanding their own physical capabilities, simplifying orthopaedic testing, to incorporating mental health education into massage therapy school.

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - Engaging in Cultural Safety, Reconciliation, and Indigenous Identity with Susan Dupuis RMT

Send us a text

Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to Susan Dupuis, an RMT and educator from Manitoba. She's here to engage us in a poignant dialogue about cultural safety and reconciliation. Our conversation kicks off with a symbolic offering of tobacco, setting the stage for a respectful and open discussion. Get an insight into Susan's captivating presentation titled, "10 Things for RMTs to Learn about Reconciliation" and explore her background, and her educational journey.
Listen closely as Susan reveals what inspired her to enter the realm of education and her thoughts on cultivating therapists. We then shift our lens to the profound issue of intergenerational trauma and the power of touch, linking it to our nervous system and our inherent need for emotional bonding.
Our conversation takes a heartfelt turn as Susan recounts her personal quest of reconnecting with her Anishinaabe identity. Learn how this newfound understanding led her to question the potential impact of therapist age on the profession and the concept of Indigenous massage therapy. As we wrap up, reflect with us on the criticality of addressing intergenerational trauma and the importance of reclaiming an Indigenous identity for RMTs and their clients.

Forrest and Monica, two therapists from the town of Nelson, BC, join me to discuss the manual therapies like osteopathy, massage, and acupuncture. They share their journey from education to practice. With their stories, we have a look into the art of listening and communicating, and how these skills contribute to effective patient care.
Our discussion explores the evidence and anecdotes behind manual therapies, as we consider the challenges of marrying traditional techniques with modern evidence-based practice. With Forrest and Monica's experiences, we illuminate the significant role of human touch in evoking therapeutic responses, and how it serves as a common thread across different therapeutic disciplines. Can the flexibility of a new professional development model for massage therapists change the status quo? Discover how British Columbia’s innovative approach is setting the stage for a shift in how therapists across Canada approach continuing education. We delve into the challenges and triumphs of this flexible professional development model, weighing the benefits of personalized learning against the risks of diminished oversight. Hear firsthand about our experiences and the fervent support we’ve encountered, as well as the critical role that evidence-based practices must play in shaping the future of massage therapy education.
This episode takes us to the American Massage Therapy Association's annual conference in Tampa, Florida, where we shared insights on managing fibromyalgia. This international perspective highlights the gaps and opportunities in Canadian massage therapy professional associations. We reflect on the current climate for Registered Massage Therapists, emphasizing the need for critical thinking and a shift away from outdated traditions to evidence-backed knowledge.
Our conversation culminates in a call to action for therapists to challenge the status quo and embrace a more inclusive approach to learning. By focusing on the integration of manual skills within an evidence-based framework, we champion the need to reduce pseudoscience and foster critical thinking throughout the profession. Listen in to gain a deeper understanding of how massage therapists can redefine their practice to truly benefit their clients, keeping pace with the latest scientific standards and innovations in the field.

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus) - The New RMT Experience with Christian Lacsamana

The New RMT Experience with Christian Lacsamana

Massage Science (Formerly Purves Versus)

Send us a text

Welcome Christian Lacsamana to Purves Versus and to the profession of massage therapy. Christian is a new RMT in Vancouver, BC. He was previously a kinesiologist who decided he wanted to pursue a career in massage therapy so he could offer additional benefits to his clients rather than just exercise and movement.

Our conversation focuses on his experiences in school and what his first year of practice has been like. Christian shares what he enjoyed and what he felt could be improved upon in the curriculum and he tells us about the future endeavours he wants to pursue as an RMT.

We discuss the mixed messaging in RMT education, the importance of language and communication styles, the importance of mental health and ongoing self-care and how creating a sense of community and support in embracing change in how continuing education is delivered is necessary for moving forward as a profession.
