The Joanne Avison Podcast

The Joanne Avison Podcast

Joanne Avison

The Joanne Avison Podcast is a journey into Spiritual Science, examining the sacred geometry of human form and motion and how the Fascia Matrix changes all we thought we knew about human bodies. Reflecting on her rich experience as a movement and manual therapy practitioner, Certified Archetypal Consultant, ordained minister and Doctor of Spiritual Science; Joanne challenges our assumptions of human anatomy, and asks us to consider the "Humans Being" as intimately relating "soma to soul" such that they can't really be useful separated. Joanne animates the true meaning of practical spirituality and the patterns of (our) body and being as one!! Told through artful storytelling and conversations with scientists, researchers, teachers, clients and curious fellow beings; this podcast will spark your curiosity of humans “being in bodies”, and inspire your life-long inquiry into who you really are.

In this episode Joanne talks to Wil Brown, the founder of London Movement Group. Wil is all about experiencing life via physical exploration, in action. He sees his job as “sharing what I figure out...” and has gained tens of thousands of fans following his lively and committed approach to playful movement.
Joanne and Wil talk about their respective experiences and how, through exploring very different routes to movement methods and approaches, they agree entirely on such things as the importance of recovery time - and playfulness!! Movement is not (and can’t be) an intellectual process, so it’s a rich ground to explore the sensory nature of moving well - for the love of it - even in the most ordinary moments of your day.... Finding everyday ease and grace is a thing, right?
We hope you enjoy this conversation!!

Join us to learn three great movements for healing Diastasis Recti.
Your body is round and it needs to do what it does naturally, which is breathe, gently spiral and walk - while it heals. Some methods of working with this issue require you to compress and tighten an area that is already in trouble. That’s a bit like shouting at yourself when you fell over and grazed your knee! What you really want is a gentle hand to help you get up and clean the graze and give you a bit of loving kindness!!

Here you go - In this episode Paul Thornley and Joanne Avison explain why you DO NOT SHOUT at Diastasis Recti and YOU DO give yourself the right KIND of loving kindness. That way you are gently training over time (instead of straining in overtime) using Nature’s Ground Reaction Force to help you - to find your way back to a more optimum degree of healing. It’s a process - that ensures progress. Wishing your clients and you well in your kind-to-yourself practice. (Your rectus abdominis myofascia will thank you!)

The Joanne Avison Podcast - Dr Karen Kirkness on spiral anatomy, spinning many plates, and being human

Welcome to the second episode of this new season, in which I interview the wonderful Dr Karen Kirkness!
Karen is a yoga practitioner and recovering academic. Her book, Spiral Bound: Integrated Anatomy for Yoga, provides a rationale for curating movement practices that are led by the rotational constraints of the body. In this podcast (recorded in 2023 before Karen was rightfully awarded her PhD) we share our admiration for each other’s work and our fascination with spiral anatomy.
If you are a movement teacher or manual practitioner; if you are a mother, a daughter, a husband, a son, a father, a friend or a professional colleague, if you juggle and spin one hundred plates on sticks – (ie, if you have a pulse) – then there is magic in this conversation for you too. It is published in celebration of Dr Kirkness’s work, and in loving appreciation of her contribution to the world.
I hope you enjoy us enjoying each other as much as we did!
Joanne

The Joanne Avison Podcast - Myofascial Magic: The Automagically Fabulous Pelvic Foot

Paul and Joanne share their experience and stories about pelvic issues, how they affect so many of us, and... how misunderstood they might be! How can we “rephrase” our understanding of the mythical “Pelvic Floor” and discover the magic of releasing the Pelvic Foot?

This is not a made up idea, by movement instructors who didn’t like learning anatomy! Paul talks about the key science behind this structural understanding of the human body. Effectively, you have a pelvic foot – not a pelvic floor... It’s true, and magic happens when you know that, know how to treat that and know how to move so that you can enjoy freedom from so many issues that are usually assigned to the “pelvic floor”.

There are many elements in Myofascial Magic that we can bring to the table (or mat or machine when we are teaching) that will automagically enhance all kinds of issues!

If you would like more information on the next available course, visit myofascialmagic.com and press the 'Start Now' button to watch our free training.
You can also book an informal friendly call to chat to Joanne or Paul any time, either after you've watched the training, or simply by emailing us to say hi on info@myofascialmagic.com!

Hello everyone and welcome! Today I'm exploring moving from burnout to balance. Whether you're a busy parent, an entrepreneur, a team member, or you just balance a lot, this is for you.

Burnout can manifest in many ways, from feeling constantly tired to losing passion for the things you once loved. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent, often giving us signals long before our minds catch up. Tuning in and recognising our own body’s language, can guide us toward tiny adjustments that make huge differences to prevent it.

Especially if we honour the internal signals and treat ourselves with compassion. It's so easy to criticise ourselves, especially when we're juggling different roles and tasks and not managing everything perfectly. But self-awareness and compassion are key to finding that balance we seek; productivity might not be the optimum reward! Plus there’s micro things we can do to create a huge difference!

So how can we move from burnout to balance? It starts with small, practical steps. Taking time for yourself, establishing boundaries and listening to your body. Certain simple things can make a profound difference. Particularly remembering that moving from burnout to balance is a journey, not a destination - it’s more of a process than an event. It’s worth being patient with yourself; listening to your body, and practicing self-compassion...and using some of these simple tools. Just because they work and you're worth it!

In this conversation, Joanne Avison interviews Shane McDermott, an advanced practitioner, photographer, therapist, and explorer, often referred to as a “contemporary renaissance man”. They introduce the essential difference it makes to understand the human body beyond anatomy - and into archetypes - over time. To begin, they reminisce about meeting 25 years ago while teaching for Tom Myers and reflect on their time training with Caroline Myss, when she first taught Sacred Contracts (Archetypes) in person.

Joanne and Shane delve into the transformative impact of understanding archetypes on body work therapy, emphasizing the way we understand time and how it is linked so closely to our life force. When we think we are time bound - we can operate at a level that keeps us on the “hamster wheel”. When we know how our archetypes work, in time, we can access deeper states of being and healing. It is a wonderful introduction to the series on Space and Time that’s coming up soon. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss it - and also check out our first episode with Shane released recently - 'Listening vs Hearing: How To Tune Into The World Around You' to put it all into practice.
