356: Voice 21 - oracy education charity with Amy Gaunt
Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
08/14/23 • 36 min
Voice 21 is the UK’s oracy education charity. They work with schools to transform the learning and life chances of young people through talk. They campaign for oracy to have a higher status in the education system.
Oracy skills are vital to success in school and in life. And yet, for many children, especially those growing up in poverty, opportunities to develop these vital skills are missed. Only a minority of schools have consistent, coherent or adequately resourced provision to develop these skills in their students.
Voice 21's sustained approach weaves oracy into a school’s DNA, ensuring current and future students have access to a high-quality oracy education. This means that students in Voice 21 Oracy Schools, including those who would otherwise miss out, develop the oracy skills they need for success in school and in life.
Amy Gaunt is Director of Learning and Impact at Voice 21. Amy joined the charity's founding leadership team in 2016 and has supported its growth from one London school to a network of nearly 1000 schools across the UK. She has developed Voice 21's approach to oracy education, teacher development and school improvement and has led the development of their impact function. She is co-author of Transform Teaching and Learning through Talk: the Oracy Imperative and Voice 21's Oracy Benchmarks. Before joining Voice 21, Amy was a primary teacher, both in London and internationally.

244: NEO the next generation platform with Graham Glass
Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
02/21/22 • 37 min
Cypher Learning NEO is the next-generation platform your school has been waiting for. It’s the ideal solution for all learning activities, whether it’s creating content, assessing students, or tracking student achievement. NEO provides a refreshingly new way to teach and learn that boosts student engagement and makes teaching easier. With an intuitive design and powerful features, NEO has all the tools schools and universities need for a great learning and teaching experience.
It all started with a young boy named Graham Glass who had a tremendous passion for education. Growing up in the U.K., Graham was lucky to attend schools where he encountered some great teachers. He enjoyed going to school and learning new things. He even thought of choosing teaching as a career.
Later on, after finishing university, Graham became a teacher and was a senior lecturer at the University of Texas, where he taught Computer Science. He gained a good reputation for his teaching skills at UTD, and was soon getting offers to teach the same materials at local high-tech companies. Back in those days, Learning Management Systems (LMS) did not exist to help facilitate teaching and engage young learners with their studies. Even then, he was wondering why isn’t there a way to package his instruction materials in a scalable way and make it available to millions of people.
Graham built his first company based on his teaching experience and ventured on to corporate training and software products. He founded two more companies related to computer tech and training, but his passion has always remained teaching and education. Even though he spent most of his career in the enterprise software space, there has always been a significant educational component, whether it was teaching at University, writing books, teaching in corporations, or explaining complex topics at seminars.
That's why in 2009 he decided to go back to his educational roots by starting a new company called EDU 2.0. The company focused on something that was very close to Graham's heart, which was improving education through an innovative e-learning platform. His mission was to provide a better way of facilitating teaching and learning and have a bigger impact on the way people learn.
In 2014 EDU 2.0 rebranded to NEO and EDU 2.0 for Business rebranded to MATRIX. Both products are now under the umbrella of CYPHER LEARNING. In 2017, the company launched a new LMS product for entrepreneurs named INDIE.
Over the years, CYPHER LEARNING products have received numerous awards and recognitions, are used by over 20,000 organizations, and are available in 40+ languages.
Graham's passion for education and innovation has become the essence of who we are as a company and motivates us as a team to offer the best solutions for each market.
CYPHER LEARNING is currently the only company that offers learning management systems in all major e-learning sectors: academic, corporate, and individuals.

Empowering Futures: How Badock's Wood E-ACT Academy Shapes Young Minds
Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
02/03/25 • 52 min
Jonathan Arthur is the Executive Headteacher of Badock's Wood E-ACT academy and discusses the complexities and rewards of modern education. Jonathan articulates that while the educational landscape is more challenging than ever, it remains profoundly gratifying to enact positive change in students' lives.
He emphasises the importance of cultivating a nurturing environment where aspirations are not merely raised but made achievable through support and commitment. He highlights the necessity of building a learning culture that fosters continuous growth for both educators and students.
Jonathan passionately advocates for the integration of technology in the classroom, asserting that it should be embraced and used to equip children with the skills necessary for the future. Community engagement is important with schools serving as central hubs that inspire and empower their local populations.
Jonathan's insights into behaviour management reveal his belief that all behaviour is a form of communication, often indicative of underlying discomfort or distress. He encourages educators to approach behavioral challenges with empathy and understanding, fostering an environment where students feel safe and respected.
Education is not just a profession but a lifelong vocation that requires passion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of each child's future.
Takeaways:
- Education currently presents immense challenges, yet it remains an unparalleled vocation within society.
- The privilege of impacting lives and fostering aspirations in children is a daily reward for educators.
- Inspiring children to believe that their dreams are achievable is essential for their development.
- A culture of learning must be cultivated within schools, reflecting the continuous growth of educators.
- Technology should be embraced as an educational tool, promoting safety and future readiness among students.
- The importance of modeling expectations and being visible within the school environment cannot be overstated.

378: The Kid Across the Hall with Reid Saaris
Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
01/15/24 • 39 min
Reid’s story begins at his own high school, where his life began to diverge from that of his best friend Jamie as soon as he enrolled in advanced classes across the hall. After graduation, the gap widened as Reid pursued an elite degree studying educational opportunity in America.
In an attempt to close the opportunity gap between students like him and Jamie, Reid took a job as a teacher at Battery Creek High, a severely under-resourced school in South Carolina where students were flunking out of their classes not because they were incapable, but because the coursework was too easy.
Reid and a team of teachers and students rallied to increase enrollment in the advanced track for those who didn’t fit the honor student mold. In one year, the program doubled to become the largest provider in the state, and performance on the college-level tests increased by 20%.
Wanting to effect change on a larger scale, Reid founded Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS) to find and help students all over the country who have been overlooked, discouraged, or are otherwise missing from higher-level learning opportunities.
Backed by new research and original survey data of millions of teachers and students across the country, his forthcoming book THE KID ACROSS THE HALL: The Fight for Opportunity in Our Schools (Redwood Press/Stanford University Press; September 5) vividly chronicles Reid’s triumphs, setbacks, and insights as he learned firsthand that the hard task of educational reform will take much more than the Hollywood myth of the well-intentioned teacher who saves the day.

344: The Literacy Lab and Leading Men Fellowship
Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
05/22/23 • 45 min
The Literacy Lab Appoints Johnathon Hines as the First National Education Ambassador for its Leading Men Fellowship. Georgia’s first Black male Pre-K Teacher of the Year hopes to inspire other young Black men to pursue teaching as a career.
The Literacy Lab is a national non-profit organization that provides students – in communities experiencing racial and/or economic inequities – with evidence-based, culturally responsive literacy instruction as preparation for academic, professional, and personal success. The Literacy Lab partners with school districts to help close the literacy gap largely by embedding full-time, rigorously trained tutors in early childhood centers and elementary schools.
The Literacy Lab’s Leading Men Fellowship creates opportunities for young men of color and increases representation in the field of education. Leading Men Fellows are young men of color who have recently graduated from high school and participate in a year-long, residency-style experience in which they provide evidence-based literacy support to pre-kindergarten students while receiving robust coaching and professional development and gaining valuable experience.
In this episode I chat to Johnathan Hines and Ivan Douglas, National Director of the Leading Men Fellowship.
