Crimes and Consequences

The province of British Columbia in Canada was gripped by a string of disappearances and deaths of its young people in the early 1980s. At first, the police thought maybe the missing children were runaways, and didn’t spend too much of their time on the cases. However, when a 9-year-old boy disappeared and then his body was later found, the police realized that 9-year-olds don’t usually run away from home. Eventually, the police would arrest Clifford Olson, who would be dubbed “The Beast of British Columbia”. In 2019, Keyona Griffin called 911 and whispered for them to please hurry because she was about to die. In the call, she told the dispatcher that her aunt had already been murdered and she was going to be next. But the urgency in her voice somehow got lost in translation, and the police left after knocking on her door and getting no answer.
Keyona's death and the murder of her aunt set in motion a sequence of events that resulted in two more people being killed. On September 19th, 2009, a cloud of unimaginable violence and darkness shrouded the city of Naples. It was a crime described as the worst of the worst - Mesac Damas had murdered his wife Guerline, and their five children.
After the killings, he fled to Haiti, where he was eventually captured. He confessed to the murders but blamed his mother-in-law for "voodooing his ass" and casting a bad spirit in him.
